Sule seeks ‘white paper' from civil aviation ministry on safety issues; questions govt's approach
'Just the other day there was a railway accident, and now a plane crash. Infrastructure may be improving, but if people are dying in the process, there is need for introspection. Who is going to take responsibility for the loss of lives? It is the government that should show moral responsibility and take safety measures seriously, whether it is in railways, roads or aviation,' Sule said.
She also cited the Mumbra accident near Mumbai, in which four persons died after falling off two suburban trains, and said she would seek a detailed discussion on both incidents in Parliament.
Pune, Jun 13 (PTI) NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule on Friday demanded a 'white paper' from the civil aviation ministry on safety issues in the past 10 years in the backdrop of the horrific Ahmedabad plane crash a day earlier, in which 241 of 242 persons on board perished.
'The civil aviation ministry should publish a white paper covering the last 10 years. They (government) advertise that even an ordinary person can now fly because of affordable ticket prices. But what is the point if passengers are risking their lives? What is the use of a discounted journey if there's no guarantee they'll return home safely?' she questioned.
'We will definitely demand a detailed discussion in Parliament on both the railway accident and the plane crash, just like the discussion held on the Pahalgam attack,' she said while asserting that there is growing concern for safety of passengers in the railway, road and aviation sectors.
She admitted that infrastructure has improved, as claimed by the government, but pointed out that accidents have also increased.
In Pune, she said a newly inaugurated railway terminus saw waterlogging in the rains, which should be investigated.
'There's a lot of talk about infrastructure, development, and urbanization, but are we reviewing safety issues in areas such as potable water, accidents, pollution, and rising COVID cases? Are such reviews happening at the state level?' she asked.
Sule praised Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for his consistent focus on safety issues.
'He is one minister who is serious about people's safety. He encourages MPs to raise such issues in Parliament and is always ready to answer. He insists that MPs must pay attention to safety in their constituencies. But unfortunately, no follow-up meetings are being held at the state or national level,' Sule said. PTI SPK BNM

Trump has ‘trumpeted' India-Pak ceasefire claims 13 times, when will PM speak up: Cong
'He (Trump), of course, showered praise on both countries in equal measure,' Ramesh said. 'Today President Trump turns 79. In the 34 days between May 10, 2025, and June 13, 2025, he trumpeted publicly on 13 different occasions in 3 different countries that he had brought about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using trade with America as a carrot and stick,' Congress general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, said on X. New Delhi, Jun 14 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday cited that on 13 occasions, US President Donald Trump has publicly 'trumpeted' that he brought about a 'ceasefire' between India and Pakistan, and asked when will Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak up on these claims. '@narendramodi when will you speak up,' the Congress leader asked in the post. Ramesh also shared on X a list and details of the occasions when Trump made the claims with the quotes of the US president and links to media reports. With Trump repeating his claim that he 'stopped a war between India and Pakistan', Ramesh on Friday said the US president continues to make his claims for the 'nth time' but Prime Minister Modi continues to be silent on them. Ramesh also shared a video clip of Trump's remarks on X, in which he repeated his claim that he 'stopped a war between India and Pakistan' and stopped it 'with trade'. Ramesh said that as India is engulfed in grief over the Ahmedabad aircraft tragedy, President Trump continues to make his claims on India and Pakistan for the 'nth time'. 'This was at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC yesterday. And the Prime Minister continues to be silent on these claims,' the Congress leader said on X. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of halting military actions following talks between the director generals of military operations (DGMOs) of both sides on May 10. Trump has been repeatedly claiming that the US stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. However, India has been consistently maintaining that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the DGMOs of the two militaries. Earlier this week, the Congress claimed India has suffered three 'huge diplomatic setbacks' from the US, which is constantly hyphenating India and Pakistan and that the Modi government's foreign policy has 'failed' as it is driven by domestic political considerations. Ramesh said the US' recent statements were both a 'challenge and a warning' and required serious thinking 'when the prime minister is only interested in playing divisive politics'. He also said Modi should leave aside his 'stubbornness' to call an all-party meeting and a special session of Parliament. Ramesh said US Army General Michael Kurilla calling Pakistan a 'phenomenal partner' in the counterterrorism world, Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir's reported visit to Washington for the US Army Day celebrations later this week, and the recent remarks by a Trump administration spokesperson were 'three huge setbacks' to India. Civil aviation is a big alarm: Supriya Sule on Ahmedabad plane crash
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], June 14 (ANI): After the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule on Friday raised serious concerns over India's transport safety, calling civil aviation a big alarm and a 'red flag for a long time.' Speaking to ANI, Sule said, 'Civil aviation is a big alarm. It's been a red flag for a long time. I request the Government of India to come out with a white paper.' 'The entire transport, be it roads, airways or civil aviation, there are a lot of concerns about safety.' She added, 'I thank Nitin Gadkari because he has been openly asking MPs to focus on safety. Road safety has been his priority. All of us have tried our best to work with him to make sure infrastructure and safety improve,' she told ANI. Sule noted that despite efforts in road safety, the government had struggled to maintain safety in railways and civil aviation. 'Unfortunately, our experience in railways and civil aviation has been challenging. The accidents are very alarming. I am going to discuss it in the Parliament. I'm going to meet Ashwini Vaishnaw,' Sule said. She highlighted the massive number of commuters in Mumbai alone, saying, 'The number of people using railways in Mumbai is huge. The government of India needs to put in a lot of effort and improve safety in the railways pan-India.' While expressing her grief over the crash and its national impact, she said, 'It's very painful. I appreciate that yesterday Amit Shah and today the Prime Minister went. The whole country, and the world, has reached out. It's been a very difficult 24 hours for India. We are all deeply pained.' She also warmly remembered BJP leader and former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, saying, 'Vijay Rupaniji had been a most wonderful colleague to all of us.' On Thursday, the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national on board the crashed plane, airline authorities said. (ANI)

Karnataka demands greater share of central tax pool
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday demanded greater share of funds for the state from the central tax pool. Siddaramaiah said that there had been a 'stark imbalance in fiscal returns' despite Karnataka contributing about 8.7% of the national gross domestic product and ranking second in Goods and Services Tax collections with just 5% of India's population. The chief minister said that the cut in Karnataka's share under the 15th Finance Commission from 4.7% to 3.6% had resulted in a cumulative loss of more than Rs 80,000 crore between the financial years 2020-'21 and 2025-'26, PTI reported. Siddaramaiah's request came during a meeting with 16th Finance Commission Chairman Arvind Panagariya. The commission, set up in December 2023, will recommend distribution of tax revenue between the Union government and the states for a five-year period between the financial years 2026-'27 and 2030-'31. Karnataka pays Rs 4.5 lakh crore in taxes every year, Siddaramaiah said, adding that the state received only 15 paise in return for every Re 1 it contributes to union taxes. 'This injustice should not happen in the 16th Finance Commission,' the chief minister's office said in a statement. To make the 'formula fairer, Karnataka has proposed reducing the weight of the income-distance criterion and giving more weight to a state's economic contribution, so that high-performing states are not penalised, but encouraged,' The Indian Express quoted the chief minister's office as saying. The Karnataka government also requested Rs 1.15 lakh crore for investments to strengthen infrastructure in Bengaluru.
