5 school students killed in Samana crash
Five school children and a driver were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a tipper at Samana in Patiala district on Wednesday, police said. The incident occurred on the Samana-Patiala road when the vehicle (Toyota Innova) was ferrying the students back from school.
Patiala superintendent of police Palwinder Singh Cheema, who rushed to the accident spot, said 13 children of the local Bhupindra International School were returning from school when the accident occurred. Three of the injured students are hospitalised in a critical condition. The impact of the accident was such that a JCB machine had to be requisitioned to retrieve the bodies. The driver of the truck is absconding, he said, adding he would be arrested soon.
The deceased students have been identified as Parv Sachdeva (12), Dhivanshi (11), Aradhya (10), Vargyan (8), and Sehaj Bansal (12). Expressing grief over the accident, chief minister Bhagwant Mann posted on X: 'My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I also wish a speedy recovery to those injured.'
Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh, who reached Government Rajindra Hospital to see the injured students, said, 'It is a very unfortunate incident. I have been told that the truck was speeding and hit the Innova while it was overtaking another vehicle.' As per the district administration, the Innova was a privately owned vehicle, hired by the parents to ferry the students. The seven-seater SUV had 14 occupants, including the driver.
This incident has, once again points at poor implementation of the Safe School Vahan Policy that mandates safe transportation of schoolchildren.
Under the scheme, the school authorities are responsible for the safe transportation of students. However, many schools have been turning the blind eye towards the guidelines issued by the district authorities, said officials. Patiala deputy commissioner said a review meeting is held every 15 days to ensure proper implementation of the policy and violators are challaned. 'An emergency meeting has been called after the incident,' said the DC.

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 21 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh LoP and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu led Congress government, accusing them of fostering an 'anti-Sanatan' mindset and systematically targeting the Hindu population of the state. Thakur was addressing a press conference in Shimla alongside State BJP President Rajiv Bindal. 'Ever since the Congress came to power, incidents against Hindus have been on the rise in Himachal Pradesh. The Chief Minister himself had publicly spoken of defeating a party that represents the ideology of 97 per cent Hindus of this state. That statement has now become the government's operating mindset,' said Thakur. 'The case of a missing Hindu girl is nothing but love jihad. Shockingly, the police deliberately delayed registering an FIR despite repeated requests from the family. It was only after angry public protests that the girl was traced,' referring to a recent incident in Paonta Sahib, Thakur said. He alleged that the government responded to the public outrage not with justice but political vengeance. 'Cases under BNS Section 109 have now been registered against senior BJP leaders, including Dr Rajiv Bindal and former minister Sukh Ram Chaudhary. This is nothing but a case of political retaliation,' Thakur added. He said during the present Congress regime there were multiple incidents pointing to Anti-Hindu bias. The BJP leader said that this was not the first time the Congress government had displayed open bias against Hindus or attempted to stifle the voice of the opposition. 'In the Manohar murder case in Chamba, the government didn't allow opposition leaders to visit the spot. In Nahan, a Muslim youth from Saharanpur slaughtered a cow and shared the photos on social media yet no legal action was taken,' he said. Thakur also raised the issue of an illegal mosque construction in Sanjauli, a matter that had sparked national outrage. 'Despite the uproar, the Congress government chose to remain silent,' he said. The LoP alleged that the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh was turning a blind eye to serious issues like 'love jihad', illegal religious structures, and alleged cow slaughter. 'All of this reveals a deliberate anti-Sanatan intent. If the false cases filed against BJP leaders are not withdrawn immediately, we will launch a massive statewide agitation,' Thakur warned. Rajiv Bindal, who was present at the press conference, echoed these sentiments and said the government was resorting to vendetta politics instead of focusing on law and order. The BJP leadership has demanded immediate withdrawal of what they termed as 'false and fabricated' charges and warned of intensified protests if their demand is not met. (ANI)

Solving Crime: A missing cab driver, a body in a quarry, and robbers on the run: How Karnataka cops solved a 2008 murder
It was a routine missing person report in the coastal Dakshina Kannada region of Karnataka. In less than a month, however, the case would unravel into a chilling murder case, where a man was brutally killed by strangers who just needed a vehicle to commit robberies. In November 2008, Ravi Devadiga, a travel company owner from Panja village, visited Mulki police station in Mangaluru. One of his drivers, Praveen Shetty, had gone missing with an Innova vehicle, he told the police. In his complaint, Devadiga mentioned that Praveen, who hailed from Theerthahalli in Shivamogga district, had only joined his firm as a driver two to three days ago. On November 9, Devadiga said, he left with the Innova but never returned. The vehicle was registered in the name of Shanthram Shetty, who had leased it to Devadiga's travel firm. 'Generally, in such cases, our first thought is that the cab driver would have fled with the car, as this is what usually happens,' a police officer who was part of the probe said. The police tried calling Praveen, but his phone was switched off. They then tried reaching out to his family in Theerthahalli. However, they learnt that he had not been home. The Mulki police registered a case under Section 381 (theft by a clerk or servant of property in the possession of their master or employer) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and began the probe. The police shared the vehicle number and Praveen's photo with other police stations and units and started to search for the missing driver. On November 12, three days after Praveen went missing, Lokesh Shetty, a subcontractor near a granite quarry, went to a nearby pond in Kulai village, 15 km away from Mulki, to wash his hands with three other labourers. Lokesh was shocked to see a dead body with its hands tied. He immediately alerted the Surathkal police, who visited the spot. Later, photos of the unidentified dead body were shared with other police stations. Police Inspector Parameshwar Ananth Hegde visited the spot with Devadiga, who identified the body as Praveen's. But the Innova was still missing. The police checked if Praveen had enemies or fights with anybody, but hit a dead end. Hegde, who is the current additional superintendent of police, Udupi district, recalls that the only piece of information the police had was the Innova number. 'It was a time when three to four robberies had been reported in the Dakshina Kannada district but had remained unsolved. Lorries and vehicles were being targeted at night, and people were being robbed. We shared the car registration number and photos with other police stations in the district, hoping against hope,' he said. On November 13, 2008, the Karkala police were checking vehicles when an Innova with the same registration number fled to evade inspection. The police failed to catch the vehicle at the time, but it was later found abandoned near Ujire, 55 km away from Karkala. Hegde says that he visited the Belthangady police station, where the car was seized. 'I had taken Shanthram Shetty, who confirmed that the vehicle belonged to him. It was a great lead for us. Once it was confirmed, we started our technical investigation,' he added. 'We zeroed in on the mobile numbers that were active near the checkpost. We used the same numbers and matched with those that were active at the places where the robberies were reported and at the granite quarry when the incident was reported,' he said. The police found that a couple of phone numbers were active in these locations. 'We found out that one of the numbers belonged to Safwan Hussain. I got the information that he was in Koppa in Chikkamagaluru district and caught him,' Hegde said. During interrogation, Safwan allegedly revealed the names of his associates, Mohammed Arif, Samshuddin and Moideen, who were arrested later. According to the police, they killed Praveen because they needed the Innova to commit robberies. 'It is sad that Safwan and his associates did not know anything about Praveen. They killed him just to use the car. They abducted Praveen and killed him by forcefully immersing him in stagnant water in the granite quarry. They then tied his dead body to a rock and threw it into the water. They installed a fake registration plate to commit the robberies,' Hegde added. The Mulki police collected evidence, including call detail records and CCTV footage, and filed a chargesheet before the sessions court on December 30, 2008. The accused were booked under IPC sections 363 (kidnapping), 392 (robbery), 302 (murder), and 201 (destruction of evidence). However, on March 15, 2013, the third additional district and sessions court in Mangaluru acquitted the accused. 'Yes, it was a big setback for us, but we were sure that these were the accused. We decided to challenge the judgment and appealed before the Karnataka High Court,' Hegde recalled. 'In Praveen Shetty's murder case, there were no eyewitnesses. But in the case of the robberies, the victims had seen them. They gave statements before the court and the mobile numbers that were used at the time of the robberies and the murder. The court considered these statements and circumstantial evidence,' Hegde said. On February 28, 2020, the Karnataka High Court convicted the accused to life imprisonment and imposed fines of Rs 1.13 lakh each. 'Having considered the material available on record, it is a fit case to come to a conclusion that the trial court did not consider the evidence available on record in right perspective and irresponsibly proceeded in a wrong footing in coming to the conclusion that the prosecution has not proved the case and the very appreciation of evidence available on record is nothing but proceeded in a prejudicial manner prejudging that the prosecution has not proved its case with an intention to acquit the accused which amounts to miscarriage of justice. Hence, we are of the opinion that the trial judge has committed an error in acquitting the accused and it requires interference of this court by setting aside the order of acquittal,' a bench of Justices S N Satyanarayana and H P Sandesh stated in the judgment. However, by then, Safwan, who was also involved in an attempt to murder case and other robberies, had fled from India. 'He is suspected to be in some Gulf country. We have issued a Red Corner Notice. He is still absconding,' a police officer said. Hegde was awarded the Union Home Minister's Medal for Excellence in Investigation in 2021 for solving the Praveen Shetty murder case.

"Mera baap chor hai...": Bihar Dy CM Samrat Chowdhary compares Amitabh Bachchan's film dailogue with RJD's fodder scam
Patna (Bihar) [India], June 21 (ANI): Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary on Saturday took a dig at the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, drawing parallels between the fodder scam and the iconic Bollywood film 'Deewar' starring Amitabh Bachchan. There is a famous dialogue in the film, where Amitabh Bachchan confronts with Shashi Kapoor, with the harsh reality of their father's criminal past - 'Mera baap chor hai,' the Bihar DY CM draws similarities with Tejashwi's father Lalu Prasad Yadav. Samrat Chaudhary highlighted the iconic dialogue, 'mera baap chor hai' (my father is thief) is written in the hands of Amitabh Bachchan. He said Tejashwi Yadav will also have to write the same phrase on his hands. 'Fodder was stolen in Bihar. There is a film of Amitabh Bachchan in which 'mera baap chor hai' is written on his hand. Tejashwi Yadav will also have to write the same', Samrat Chowdhary said. Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted by a special CBI court in 2017. Former Bihar Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was found guilty of illegal withdrawals of Rs 139.35 crore from the Doranda treasury by a special CBI court in Jharkhand's Ranchi. The 900-crore fodder scam cases first cropped up in 1996 and charge-sheet was filed against Lalu Yadav by CBI in 1997. The trial began in 2002 in the special CBI court at Ranchi. In 2013, he was convicted in the 1st fodder scam case and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment along with Rs 25 lakh fine. In 2017, the CBI court had convicted Lalu Yadav and 15 others and the current one is for the 2nd of six fodder scam cases. The 2nd case pertains to embezzling of about Rs 89 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury in the 1991-94 period. Significantly, Lalu Yadav and 7 others were sentenced with 3.5 years imprisonment along with a fine of 5 lakhs each. Earlier, Bihar Deputy CMs Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Sinha took part in the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations in Patna. Vijay Sinha hailed Yoga and said that it has been accepted by 176 countries of the world. Sinha stated that Yoga makes the body 'pure' and 'healthy' and connects with humanity. Attacking RJD, Vijay Sinha said that people like them are trying to create an atmosphere to make Bihar 'unhealthy' and mentioned that such people are 'mentally ill'. 'Today, more than 176 countries have accepted this yoga. This yoga makes the body pure and healthy, connects humanity. Yoga always transmits positive energy. Those who are mentally ill can also become healthy through yoga, demonic tendencies can be eliminated... These people (Lalu Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav) try to create an atmosphere of making Bihar unhealthy. Such people are mentally ill', Vijay Sinha told ANI. Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took part in the 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations, where he hailed yoga as a gift 'beyond age' that transcends all boundaries and unites humanity in 'health and harmony.' The event took place against the scenic backdrop of the Visakhapatnam coastline, with Indian Navy ships stationed near the shore, adding to the grandeur of the celebrations. The Prime Minister praised the efforts of the Andhra Pradesh government and extended his appreciation to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan for hosting the event in Visakhapatnam.
