'Mind your words': PAS veep warns Zahid after remarks on Kelantan

Malaysiakini11-07-2025
PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad today issued a veiled warning to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, after the latter reportedly said that Kelantan would be lagging in development without federal funding.
Idris also took a swipe at Zahid, asking whether he needs a map to distinguish between Kelantan and Kalimantan, or if he requires "additional classes on the Federal Constitution", whilst reminding him that Kelantan is part of Malaysia, and its people pay taxes to the federal government like everyone else...

Ex-MCA veep was comparing Akmal Saleh with PAS counterparts, not party

From Lee Chai Wah I refer to the letter by Terence Netto, titled 'Much to prefer in Puad-Ti clash than Akmal-DAP Youth slanging match' published on Aug 20. Netto wrote that former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker wants the party to leave Barisan Nasional, and 'holds PAS these days to be more rational than Umno'. However, a report published by another news portal on Aug 17 contradicts Netto's assertion. In the said report, Ti explicitly stated that his remarks, which were first reported by Malaysiakini, were not aimed at whitewashing PAS. Nor was it about pushing for MCA's exit from BN, but keeping the coalition intact amid concerns over the growing Umno-DAP alliance. Again, based on the Malaysiakini report, Ti never said that PAS these days was more rational than Umno. Ti was quoted as saying: 'In a way, (Umno Youth chief Dr) Akmal (Saleh)'s actions, in this respect, are worse than his contemporaries in PAS'. Ti was therefore comparing the current crop of youth leaders in the two parties and not the party itself. Based on the context – the reaction to the blunder involving the Jalur Gemilang – Ti was merely referring to and comparing the response to the controversy and nothing more. It was an observation and in no way an endorsement of PAS and its policies, past or present. Jumping to conclusions and making wayward assumptions is incorrect, especially when it was explained and expressed otherwise. It must also be pointed out that Netto's comments were also based on remarks by Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi, which have no reference to Ti's statements. Puad had reminded Ti of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's 1981 sermon on kafirs (infidels), when arguing against the claim that the Islamic party was more rational than Umno. But Puad's argument is off track, as it did not take into account the specific issue mentioned, which is the comparison of Akmal and his contemporaries in PAS. Instead, Puad defended Akmal's posturing as patriotism and chose not to address the comparison made by Ti in regards to how Umno Youth and PAS Youth reacted to the matter. The point was about tone and decorum, not ideology, and certainly not an endorsement of PAS. Ti's remarks must be seen in that context, and not twisted into something irrelevant. Federal state local government synergy key to 13MP success Fadillah

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasised that achieving the 13th Malaysia Plan's aspirations requires strong collaboration between government tiers. He stated that success at the local government level depends entirely on close synergy between federal, state governments and local authorities. Fadillah highlighted that state governments must strengthen their commitment to policy development and legal frameworks. He noted that local authorities themselves should become agile, innovative and people-oriented implementers. The Deputy Prime Minister added that clear well-being indicators are essential for measuring progress. Fadillah confirmed that the private sector and communities will continue serving as strategic partners in local development. He expressed belief that with this spirit of togetherness, Malaysian cities can become sustainable growth centres. Fadillah stated these regions can become inclusive and prosperous centres comparable to developed nations. He emphasised the significant role local governments play from grassroots to national level. Fadillah said this role is crucial in realising the 13MP objectives. He shared these comments through a Facebook post today. Earlier, Fadillah chaired the 86th Meeting of the National Council for Local Government. The meeting took place at Parliament House today. This MNKT meeting was convened under Article 95A of the Federal Constitution. The article establishes MNKT as the consultation medium between federal and state governments. This consultation specifically covers policies and laws related to local governments. - Bernama

Fahmi: A-GC to appeal online speech law ruling

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) will appeal to the Federal Court a ruling that decriminalises offensive online remarks under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA). Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil told the Dewan Rakyat that the terminology had been refined from a draft inherited from the previous Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, which he described as "more draconian." "Regarding the Court of Appeal's decision, I was informed that the A-GC will be filing an appeal to the Federal Court," he said. During his winding-up speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan, Fahmi said he would carefully review the appeal process and leave the matter to the A-GC. On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal ruled that the words "offensive" and "annoy" in Section 233(1)(a) of the CMA are unconstitutional, as they violate the protection for freedom of speech under the Federal Constitution. In a unanimous decision, a three-member bench led by Federal Court judge Datuk Lee Swee Seng struck down part of the provision, which criminalises the online transmission of comments deemed offensive or intended to annoy. The court held that the provisions were inconsistent with Articles 8 and 10 of the Federal Constitution, which guarantee equality before the law and freedom of speech.
