Dubai Police foil scam offering 70 per cent discounts on traffic fines
Dubai Police have arrested suspects over a scam offering fake discounts of up to 70 per cent on traffic fines. The group lured victims by offering the discounts in fraudulent advertisements on social media platforms, police allege. The scammers then used stolen credit and debit card data to pay off the fines in full, and charged the victims the 'discounted' rate in cash. 'They were meeting the victims personally, collecting the money in cash and paying the full amount of traffic fines using the stolen cards,' said Dubai Police in a statement. 'They illegally obtained the discounted amounts after the victim received confirmation of completing the payment.' The force did not specify the number of suspects, their nationalities or the number of victims. 'It is a double crime combining stealing bank details and financial fraud,' the police spokesperson said. Police said if someone is aware stolen credit cards are being used to pay their fines, they are also committing a crime. Stay vigilant Officials at the anti-fraud section of Dubai's CID warned the public to stay alert and not be deceived by similar fake promotions. 'There are official channels to pay the traffic fines. Unverified offers of discounts [are] a crime punishable by the law in the UAE,' said the spokesperson. Last month, Emirates airline said it was suspending its social media advertising to protect customers from the growing nuisance of online scams. The Dubai-based carrier said it acted in response to 'fraudulent advertisements currently circulating across social media platforms' that claim to be from Emirates. The company warned that cybercriminals were impersonating its official website by using branded visuals, unauthorised trademarks and links closely resembling those belonging to Emirates. Such phishing scams are created to lure customers into paying out for tickets, sharing personal information or following malicious links. Emirates said it is working with social media platforms to have the fraudulent advertising removed.

Dubai Police bust scam offering up to 70% discounts on traffic fines
Dubai Police, represented by the Anti-Fraud Centre within the General Department of Criminal Investigation, have arrested a group of individuals involved in promoting fraudulent social media advertisements offering alleged discounts of 30 to 70 percent on traffic fines. The suspects deceived victims by claiming they could reduce traffic fines through unofficial channels. Their criminal method involved using stolen bank card details to pay the full amount of the victims' fines. In return, they received half the value of the fines in cash from those seeking the discounts. Investigations revealed that the fraudsters acquired stolen credit card data either through cyber scams or by purchasing the information from illicit sources. They would lure individuals through misleading advertisements, meet them in person, and request the full amount of the fine. Once the payment was made using a stolen card and appeared as cleared in the system, they would then collect half of that amount in cash as a supposed 'discount' for their service. Dubai Police stressed that this is a dual crime involving both the theft of banking information and financial fraud. Furthermore, individuals who knowingly engage in such schemes, assuming they are benefiting from unlawful discounts, could be considered accomplices under the law. The public has been urged not to fall for such fraudulent offers and to rely solely on the official channels designated by authorities for settling traffic fines. Any external offers outside these official frameworks are considered illegal and punishable. Dubai Police also called on community members to report similar suspicious activity immediately through the 'Police Eye' service via Dubai Police's app or by calling the 901 contact centre.

Oman: Two arrested for smuggling 15kg drugs through shipping company
Two individuals smuggling narcotics through a shipping company in Oman, authorities said on Tuesday. The accused were caught while they were attempting to send over 15kg of opium across the border to a European nation. The Directorate General for Combatting Drugs and Psychotropic Substances nabbed the individuals in an operation that tracked the shipment of water pumps being brought into the Gulf country. The authority, in cooperation with the Directorate General of Customs, made the arrest after they found the drugs professionally concealed in the shipment. Appropriate legal action is being taken against the suspects. Last month, authorities in Oman intercepted a fishing vessel attempting to illegally enter its territorial waters and arrested two individuals of Iranian nationality on charges of drug smuggling. The Omani Coast Guard, in co-ordination with the South Al Batinah Governorate Police, intercepted the boat. Authorities confirmed that the suspects were in possession of large quantities of crystal meth, hashish, marijuana, and more than 68,000 psychotropic pills.
