Improvement driven by E&E and reforms

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's rise in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025 was driven by its electrical and electronics (E&E) sector and regulatory efficiency reforms.
The Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) said the improved standing reflects sustained industrial momentum and government-led efforts to create a more business-friendly environment.
A key initiative is the Industrial Green Lane (IGL), which expedites development and licensing approvals for industrial projects.
"Malaysia's improved competitiveness reflects not just industrial strength, but regulatory transformation on the ground," MPC director-general Datuk Zahid Ismail said in a statement.
"Through IGL, we are enabling faster, cleaner and more predictable approvals, essential for investment, productivity and growth."
The IGL model streamlines approvals via simultaneous technical briefings, fast-track licence processing and licence issuance within 24 hours of the certificate of completion and compliance.
This approach has generated RM0.5 billion in local authority revenue, created 20,000 jobs and facilitated billions in investments.
Last year, Malaysia approved RM378.5 billion in total investments, including RM120.5 billion in the manufacturing sector.
"The E&E industry led the way with RM55.8 billion, making it the largest sub-sector, supported by 73.8 per cent of foreign direct investment. These outcomes align with the National Semiconductor Strategy and the New Industrial Master Plan," MPC said.
However, issues like Customs efficiency, trade transparency and documentation handling remain hurdles to export growth.
MPC said reducing non-tariff measures and improving trade facilitation are critical for enhancing export competitiveness.
"The E&E Productivity Nexus, alongside national agencies, is addressing these challenges through digital adoption, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things-driven energy efficiency and regulatory coordination.
"There is also continued emphasis on helping small and medium enterprises adapt to global standards. The government aims to expand IGL implementation nationwide, improve logistics infrastructure and drive data-driven regulatory reforms."

After Mandarin option surfaces, APAD warns e-hailing firms against language-based bookings

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has warned that it will not tolerate any language-based discrimination in the ride-hailing booking allocation systems used by e-hailing operators. In a statement issued today, APAD said it took a grave view of claims online involving language-based discrimination in the booking system of a ride-hailing app. While the agency did not specify this, there were discussions online about a major e-hailing operator that introduced a feature allowing customers to specifically book Mandarin-fluent drivers. APAD reminded all e-hailing services that they are legally required to comply with licensing conditions under the Special Conditions of Business Mediation Licence (LPP), specifically Paragraph 9 concerning Service Level Requirements. The regulation clearly states that booking allocation systems must be fair and equitable to all drivers. 'Any violation of these conditions constitutes a single offence punishable under Section 12A(9) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010. 'If convicted, the party involved can be fined not less than RM1,000 but not more than RM200,000 or be imprisoned for a term not exceeding two years, or both,' it warned. APAD reaffirmed its commitment to upholding an e-hailing industry that is fair, transparent, inclusive, and free from any form of discrimination. In posts online, users shared screenshots of an e-hailing app that provided an option to book Mandarin-speaking drivers, albeit at a premium. The operator rolled back the option soon after, however, following public backlash.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra to announce policy rates today at 10 AM

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 6 (ANI): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra will announce the policy rates today at 10 AM in Mumbai as the three-day monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting will conclude. The meeting, which began on August 4, was held to review the repo rates and determine the central bank's policy stance for the upcoming months. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee is headed by the RBI Governor and comprises three officials from the central bank and three external members nominated by the Government of India. The MPC meets every two months to decide on key interest rates and outline the direction of the country's monetary policy. According to a report by the State Bank of India (SBI), the RBI is expected to announce a 25 basis points (bps) cut in the repo rate in the current monetary policy meeting. The report suggested that a frontloaded rate cut in August could bring an 'early Diwali' by boosting credit growth, especially as the festive season in FY26 is also frontloaded. The SBI report highlighted that historical data show a clear trend, any repo rate cut ahead of Diwali leads to higher credit growth during the festive period. It stated, 'We expect RBI to continue frontloading with a 25 bps cut in August policy.' Citing a past instance, the report mentioned that a 25 bps repo rate cut in August 2017 resulted in an incremental credit growth of Rs 1,956 billion by the end of Diwali, with nearly 30 per cent of this growth coming from personal loans. It added that Diwali, being one of India's biggest festivals, witnesses increased consumer spending, and a low-interest rate environment ahead of the festival helps improve credit demand. In its previous meeting held in June, the RBI had taken a surprising step by cutting the repo rate by 50 bps, bringing it down to 5.5 per cent. Explaining the move, Governor Malhotra had said the decision was driven by softening inflation, with both near-term and medium-term projections falling within the RBI's target range. He also noted that food inflation remained under control. The upcoming announcement is expected to provide further clarity on the central bank's approach of supporting economic growth ahead of the festive season. (ANI)
