India, US Expand Strategic Cooperation: Modi-Vance Meeting Covers Energy, Defence, Global Issues
Modi-Vance Meet: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Vice President of the United States of America, JD Vance today, accompanied by the Second Lady Usha Vance, their children, and senior members of the US Administration, where the two sides discussed bilateral ties. According to officials, PM Modi and US Vice President Vance welcomed progress in the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, while exchanging views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest.
In their talks, the two leaders noted continued efforts towards enhancing cooperation in energy, defence, and strategic technologies. "Prime Minister and Vice President Vance reviewed and positively assessed the progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation. They welcomed the significant progress in the negotiations for a mutually beneficial India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement focused on the welfare of the people of the two countries. Likewise, they noted continued efforts towards enhancing cooperation in energy, defence, strategic technologies and other areas," said the PMO in a statement.
The PMO also added that Prime Minister Modi fondly recalled his visit to Washington D.C. in January and his fruitful discussions with President Trump, which laid down the roadmap for close cooperation between India and the U.S., leveraging the strengths of Make America Great Again (MAGA) and Viksit Bharat 2047.
"Prime Minister extended his best wishes to the Vice President, Second Lady and their children for a pleasant and productive stay in India. Prime Minister conveyed his warm greetings to President Trump and said that he looked forward to his visit to India later this year," said the statement.
The prime minister is hosting a dinner for Vance, his Indian-origin wife Usha Chilukuri and the delegation of senior US government officials accompanying the vice president. Vance and his family landed in Delhi this morning on a four-day India visit after their trip to Italy over the weekend. He is the first US vice president to visit India in 12 years after Joe Biden visited New Delhi in 2013. Vance and his family will also be visiting Jaipur and Agra.
The US was the largest trading partner of India with overall bilateral trade in goods and services amounting to USD 190 billion for the calendar year 2023. In the financial year 2023-24, the US was the third largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India with inflows of USD 4.99 billion.

Former External Affairs Minister and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor led the delegation. By entrusting the leadership of this delegation to Tharoor, who has a deep knowledge of international politics, the Modi government showed its 'national interest is paramount' approach. Some groups tried to play parochial politics around the topic of this delegation. Congressmen are also waiting to see when Rahul Gandhi will have the wisdom to realize that by making such a demand, he is defaming his own country on the international stage. It was because of this stance that Congress's discord became public after Tharoor was assigned the leadership of the delegation. If the Modi government had included only BJP and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs in the delegation, the Congress's opposition would have been understandable. When that did not happen, the Congress leadership baselessly and unnecessarily blamed the Modi government on the delegation issue. There was no reason for Congress to be so hesitant about Tharoor's inclusion. This made a mockery of the Congress party. Tharoor has been openly praising the Modi government on various platforms after 'Operation Sindoor'. Some Congress leaders also complained about Tharoor over this. It was not expected that on one hand Rahul Gandhi would ask questions like how many Indian aircrafts have fallen down while on the other hand he would show the generosity of supporting the all-party delegation. As expected, this stance of Rahul Gandhi was well received in Pakistan. Terrorist leaders like Hafiz Saeed showered Rahul Gandhi with praise. India decided to call a ceasefire after receiving a proposal from Pakistan. Rahul tried to politicize that too. The Pakistan government itself has given information about which of its military bases were damaged due to India's attack. Despite the fact that Pakistan, which claims to have shot down Indian planes, has not been able to produce a single piece of evidence, Rahul Gandhi continues to trumpet and ask about how many Indian planes have been shot down. PM Modi awarded Cyprus' highest honour, Order of Makarios III, by President Christodoulides
Nicosia/New Delhi, June 16 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi was today awarded Cyprus' highest honour, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, by President Nikos Christodoulides at the presidential palace in Nicosia. PM Modi said he is humbled to receive the 'Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III' of Cyprus and dedicated it to the friendship between the two nations. The MEA spokesperson said in a post on X: 'An award dedicated to the trusted India-Cyprus friendship & 1.4 billion people of India. 'President @Christodulides conferred PM @narendramodi with the 'Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III' of Cyprus. 'The honour reflects the enduring India – Cyprus bilateral partnership and shared commitment to work together for the common vision for peace, progress and prosperity.' Earlier, the PM was warmly welcomed by the Cyprus President at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia and accorded a ceremonial welcome. Abu Dhabi state oil firm makes USD 18.7 billion bid for Australia's Santos
SYDNEY: Abu Dhabi's state-owned oil company is leading an USD 18.7 billion takeover bid for Australian energy group Santos as it seeks to build a global natural gas giant, the two firms said Monday. Santos' board said it planned to unanimously recommend the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company's offer to shareholders if it can agree on the takeover terms. Adelaide-based Santos has operations in Australia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and the United States, and is a major supplier of liquefied natural gas in Australia and Asia. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company offered USD 5.76 a share in a bid for all of Santos' outstanding stock, valuing the entire company at USD 18.7 billion. The price per share is 28 percent higher than Santos' closing level on Friday. It was the "final, non-binding" offer from the Middle East oil company, which had offered two, lower confidential bids in March, Santos said. Santos' stock was more than 11 percent higher in afternoon trade on the Australian Securities Exchange. The Abu Dhabi-based, state-owned energy firm made its bid via a consortium led by its own subsidiary, XRG. Other members of the consortium include Abu Dhabi Development Holding Company and global investment firm Carlyle. In a statement, XRG said it aimed to build on Santos' legacy as a trusted energy producer, "strengthening domestic and international energy security." "The proposed transaction is aligned with XRG's strategy and ambition to build a leading integrated global gas and LNG business," it said. Santos' board said it intended to "unanimously recommend" that shareholders vote in favour of the deal if it can agree on terms and there is no better offer.
