Fahmi announces founding board members of Malaysian Media Council
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has announced the founding board members of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC).
The Communications Minister said the members comprise representatives from four categories, namely media companies, media associations, media professionals and non-media practitioners.
They are:

2. National Union of Journalists Malaysia secretary- general Teh Athira Yusof
3. Astro Awani chief editor Ashwad Ismail
4. Gerakan Media Merdeka president Radzi Razak

6. Academician Gayathri S. Venkiteswaran
7. Daily Express chief editor Datuk Sardahthisa James
8. Journalists Association of Kuching Division Sarawak president Ronnie Teo Teck Wei
9. Malaysian Tamil Media Organisation president Muthameez Manan
10. Mohd Azmyl Md Yusof
11. Celine Lim
12. Terence Ooi
'After 50 years, we have finally passed the law in Parliament,' he said in his speech during the National Journalists Day (Hawana) 2025 celebrations here on Saturday (June 14).
The Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024, which was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Feb 26, will allow self-regulation within the local media industry.
Fahmi also announced the extension of social security protection of part-time and freelance journalists, or stringers.
He said this was in collaboration with the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) under the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme.
'Last year, a total of 531 stringers benefited from the scheme.
'Similar benefits would be extended this year with an allocation of RM31,170,' he added.
He also announced that protection of media stringers would also be expanded under the Employees Provident Fund's i-Saraan scheme.
Fahmi said this initiative involved an allocation of over RM15,000.
He also announced that over 12,000 journalists would be able to enjoy 50% discounts on AirAsia flights to over 50 destinations in Asean, in conjunction with Malaysia's chairmanship.

Extension Of SKSPS, i-Saraan Reflects Govt's Commitment To Part-time Journalists' Welfare
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The extension of the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) under the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso), along with contributions to the i-Saraan scheme by the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), for part-time media practitioners reflects the government's commitment to ensuring no group is left behind in accessing social protection. Part-time Utusan Malaysia journalist Muhamad Iqbal Hamdan, who is also a committee member of the Penang Mutiara Media Club, said the initiative reflected the government's appreciation for the contributions of part-time journalists who were frequently exposed to risks while covering assignments. 'I hope these kinds of initiatives will carry on in the coming years so new part-time journalists can enjoy the same protection benefits,' he said when met by Bernama at the highlight of the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today. Perak Media Practitioners Association (PPMP) chairman Sayed Hesham Syed Idris said the move gave part-time media practitioners the confidence and assurance to carry out their duties in the field. 'PPMP views the extension as demonstrating the government's concern in looking after the welfare of part-time journalists, given that many of them are not permanent employees and have no retirement savings. 'This initiative shows that the government is listening to the voices of the media, especially part-time journalists who do not enjoy the same benefits as permanent staff,' he said, expressing hope that an insurance scheme would also be introduced for part-time journalists. Kedah Elite Media Club (KMEK) president M. Hifzudin Ikhsan described the extension of Perkeso protection for another year as a meaningful initiative for the club's members. 'This contribution not only ensures the safety of our members who work on a part-time basis, but also upholds their right to proper protection,' he said. Echoing the same sentiment, Terengganu Media Journalists' Club (KAWAT) president Ahmad Syafri Husnaini Mohamad said the extension indirectly helped ease the burden of part-time staff who did not have a fixed income.

Media council a milestone in press reform, says Syahredzan
Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan said the establishment of a media council fulfils a Pakatan Harapan manifesto promise made during the 15th general election. PETALING JAYA : Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has hailed the enforcement of the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025 as a landmark reform, saying it underscores the government's commitment to institutional change and press freedom. He said the Act, which came into force today, marks a shift from government intervention to a self-regulatory framework that empowers the media to manage itself more independently. 'Complaints, grievances, dissatisfaction and any issues related to media reporting will be managed and resolved through a dispute resolution mechanism that will be developed under this Act,' he said in a Facebook post. Syahredzan said the new legislation will also reduce reliance on legal action, such as civil suits or criminal charges, to settle media-related disputes. 'Legal actions under laws such as the Communications and Multimedia Act against media bodies and online practitioners should also be minimised,' he said. Earlier today, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the Act's enforcement today in conjunction with National Journalists Day (Hawana), and said the founding board of the media council had been finalised. The council will serve as an independent self-regulatory body that protects media freedom and ensures compliance with ethical journalism standards. Syahredzan, who is also the DAP national vice-chairman, said the Act fulfils a Pakatan Harapan manifesto promise made during the 15th general election under the 'Kita Boleh' campaign. However, he said, the government's reform agenda should not stop here. 'The government must also review laws that restrict media freedom, such as the Printing Presses and Publications Act, to ensure alignment with the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Federal Constitution,' he said.
