PKL Season 12: Services players pay tribute to nation's heroes on Independence Day

"This is a great honour for me. Wearing the Services jersey means a commitment to the nation, and playing in the PKL means showcasing my talent to the whole country. Both roles, in their own way, are a service to the nation', he added.
Varinder Singh, a proud member of the Indian Air Force for 17 years, and now serving as assistant coach for Gujarat Giants, echoed similar sentiments. 'It is a proud thing to serve my country. This is the first time I have got the opportunity to wear the Gujarat Giants jersey. It is a proud thing and I am getting the chance to do the two things that are close to my heart.'
Further highlighting how certain attributes learned in the armed forces also shape the game on the mat, he added, 'We learn discipline, respect and teamwork in the Armed Forces, and these are qualities you learn in Kabaddi as well. So, we learn to respect our game and to have a sense of responsibility, for your nation and your team.'
Sharing his learnings from his Services background and how that shaped him as a player, Bharat reckoned, "Both taught me that discipline and dedication are the most valuable things. The Forces taught me the meaning of teamwork, and kabaddi and the PKL strengthened it further. These two experiences have made me a responsible, focused, and a proud Indian."
Elaborating on how his experience in the armed forces translates to excellence on the mat, Bharat stated, "The Forces taught me to stay calm under pressure and make quick decisions. In kabaddi, I show that same focus in reading the game, aggression in attack, and fearlessness in defence.'
According to Varinder Singh, kabaddi has also encouraged mass participation from the army and it serves as motivation for him going into his debut season as assistant coach.
'You can see how many services players play Kabaddi. Even when I coach in the Air Force, I see that they do their duty for their country. They do their duty at the border and also participate in the game. That motivates me. We learn a lot from our duty and our games. It is a combination of both. We understand that if we want to achieve something, we have to do our best', he concluded.
The Pro Kabaddi League Season 12 begins on August 29 in Vizag, with Telugu Titans taking on Tamil Thalaivas in the first match, while Bengaluru Bulls will be facing Puneri Paltan in the second match of the day. The league stage will take place in four cities, including Jaipur, Chennai and New Delhi.

Asian Shooting: Indian men's air pistol team clinches silver
Synopsis Indian shooters began their Asian Championships campaign in Shymkent with the men's 10m air pistol team securing a silver medal, narrowly missing gold to China. The men's team, comprising Anmol (580), Aditya Malra (579) and Asian Games gold medallist Saurabh Chaudhary (576) aggregated a score of 1,735 to finish behind China, who took the gold by amassing 1,744 points. Iran took the bronze, totalling 1,733 points. In the individual men's 10m air pistol section, Anmol, who progressed into the final in seventh place with a qualification score of 580, ended up sixth in the medal round aggregating 155.1 points. Hu Kai of China took the gold with a score of 241.6, while South Korea's Hong Suhyeon and Iran's Amir Joharikhou bagged the silver and bronze with scores of 239.0 and 216.8 respectively. The other two Indian shooters, Aditya (579) and Chaudhary (576) finished 13th and 21st respectively after the qualification round and missed the finals. Interestingly Amit Sharma, a 20-year-old who started competing internationally at as a junior in 2023, beat the 48-strong field to top the qualification round with a superb score of 588. But since he was competing in the 'Ranking Points Only' (RPO) category, he could not make it to the final. RPO shooters participate for rankings and cannot advance to the medal round. Another Indian RPO shooter Varun Tomar shot 584 to end the qualification round in fourth place. Kapil clinched the individual junior men's 10m air pistol gold with a score of 243.0. He shot 579 in qualification to enter the medal round placed fourth. Another Indian Gavin Antony, who also entered the final, shot 220.7 to clinch the bronze medal. The trio of Gavin (582), Kapil and Vijay Tomar (562) aggregated 1,723 points to win the team silver behind South Korea, who amassed 1,734 points. India has fielded 182 shooters across senior, junior and youth categories, which is the country's biggest-ever contingent in the continental meet. Medals are up for grabs in 58 events -- 46 individual and 12 mixed team -- across various categories. The senior India team had bagged six gold, eight silver and five bronze medals to finish third behind powerhouse China, who topped with 14 gold (total 33), and hosts South Korea, who bagged nine gold (total 24), in the previous edition of the continental event in Changwon. Overall, India had finished with 59 medals (21 gold, 22 silver and 16 bronze) in Changwon.

Chetan Sharma backs Bumrah, urges players to follow physios' guidance
Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah may have drawn criticism for playing only three Tests during the series against England to manage his workload, but former BCCI chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma has backed the bowler, saying players should go by the physios' advice as they are the "better judges". The injury-prone Bumrah played the first, third and fourth Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar five-match series, skipping two matches with Mohammed Siraj leading the pace-bowling attack. Sharma, himself a former pace bowler, said it was akin to a patient having to follow the doctor's advice. "If the medical team advises, if the doctor tells me that I have to take antibiotics, then I have to consume them. "If our physios is telling a player to manage workload, I think we should listen to them because they are the better judges," said Sharma on the sidelines of the country's public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati signing a deal with London-based cricket analytics company CricViz on Monday for the telecast of 104 episodes of "The Great Indian Cricket Show" on Doordarshan. Sharma, who forged a potent partnership with Kapil Dev for nearly half-a-decade and went on to take more than 125 wickets in Tests and ODIs before becoming the chairman of selectors, added that the team's performance in the England Test series gave him confidence that it will win the Asia Cup, which begins in the UAE next month. "I know that whoever is selected will be the best for the country. And the kind of cricket we are playing right now, I'm really proud with the way India played in England. Ton-up Sarfaraz puts Mumbai in a commanding position against TNCA XI
Sarfaraz Khan kickstarted the new domestic season in authoritative fashion, smashing a brilliant century (138 retd. hurt, 114b, 10x4, 6x6) to power Mumbai to a commanding 367 for five against TNCA XI on the opening day of the first round of the All India Buchi Babu tournament match at the Gojan College ground here on Monday. Sarfaraz was at his aggressive best, smashing an inexperienced bowling attack to all corners of the field. Sarfaraz had made his Test debut last year and was dropped from the Indian team for the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. He was severe on Siddharth, using the sweep shot to good effect to find the boundaries, including two sixes. Once he crossed his half-century with a flick off pacer Prem Kumar, Sarfaraz stepped on the accelerator. He got to his century, ramping pacer Lokesh Raj over slips for a boundary. The batter also ran hard between the wickets with seven braces and two threes. Once he crossed his landmark, Sarfaraz cut loose, lofting Lokesh down the ground for consecutive sixes even while battling cramps before walking off.
