Back-to-back titles beckon for Barca
Although Atletico Madrid have done some good business this summer – Alex Baena, in particular, looks like a great capture – the La Liga title race again looks like a straight shootout between Real Madrid and Barcelona, with the latter our outright winner pick at 11/10.
A new era starts for Real under Xabi Alonso and Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold are smart additions, although their Club World Cup campaign was not the most inspiring, especially when they were sent packing following a 4-0 defeat by PSG in the semi-finals.
It will take time to adjust to Alonso's methods and they will start the season on the back foot with Jude Bellingham out until October, limiting their options in midfield given they let Luka Modric leave and could also be without Eduardo Camavinga because of an ankle issue.
Barcelona should start stronger with a more settled squad and Hansi Flick in the dugout – and they finished four points better off than Madrid in top spot last season, scoring an eye-watering 102 goals.
Their front three of Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha remains one of the most devastating around, while Marcus Rashford and youngster Roony Bardghji are good attacking back-up options along with Ferran Torres.
Monaco in the mix again
It is hard to see past European champions PSG dominating Ligue 1 again this season, so we will look to other markets for our acca selection and Monaco are a solid pick at 10/11 to make the top three.
The principality club have made the top three in four of the last five seasons, doing so under Adi Hutter in their past two campaigns.
Marseille pipped them to second spot by four points last term, but the Ligue 1 expected-points table had Monaco as runners-up on 70 points, compared with the 61 they actually accrued. Marseille, meanwhile, outperformed their expected points by +8.73, so they could well regress this season.
Young stars Eliesse Ben Seghir and Mika Biereth remain at Monaco and will surely only get better, while experienced pair Paul Pogba and Eric Dier have arrived along with Barcelona loanee Ansu Fati.
Potential Leverkusen decline favours Dortmund
As in France, the German Bundesliga title race looks pretty uncompetitive this season and Bayern Munich should justify quotes of 2/9 to win the title.
So it is in the 'winner without Bayern Munich' market that there could be some value, with Borussia Dortmund a good pick at 7/4 to be best of the rest.
Last season was one to forget for Dortmund, who could only scrape fourth spot, but they were much better following the arrival of Niko Kovac in February and finished the Bundesliga season with seven wins and a draw from their last eight matches.
Their subsequent Club World Cup campaign was not the best, although they did give Real Madrid a game in the quarter-finals and they have kept together the bulk of their squad, while adding Jobe Bellingham to their midfield and Yan Couto and Daniel Svensson to their defence.
The main reason for backing them, though, is the lack of competition.
Bayer Leverkusen have downgraded in the dugout from Alonso to Erik ten Hag, and have lost the core of their team with Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka departing.
Leipzig, meanwhile, could not even make the top six last term and have lost Benjamin Sesko, while Eintracht Frankfurt will have to make do without Liverpool-bound Hugo Ekitike.

Tough times ahead for Verona
Serie A could again be home to the most competitive title race across Europe's major leagues and, while I think Juventus could offer a bit of value at 5/1, it is not suitable for an accumulator.
Instead, I like the look of Hellas Verona to be relegated at 11/8. Verona finished 14th in Serie A last term, although they were in the thick of the relegation battle at the end of the season, surviving thanks to five points from their last three games.
They lost 21 times in the Italian top flight and conceded 66 goals – both of those tallies were worse than relegated sides Empoli and Venezia.
Last season's top scorer for Verona, Casper Tengstedt, is no longer at the club after his loan spell expired, while key defender Diego Coppola has been sold to Brighton, so it could be a testing season for Paolo Zanetti's side.

Tottenham leave Bissouma out of Super Cup squad due to persistent lateness

Thomas Frank has flexed his muscles to Tottenham's squad by excluding Yves Bissouma from the travelling party to face Paris Saint-Germain owing to persistent lateness. Spurs make their Uefa Super Cup debut in Udine on Wednesday in a fiendish early test for their manager, who is overseeing his first pre-season since moving from Brentford in June. Frank has wasted no time pressing home his standards and explained he had opted against selecting Bissouma, the Mali international midfielder, because of multiple lapses. 'Bissouma has not travelled with the team because of disciplinary reasons,' Frank said after their arrival in north-east Italy. 'He has been late several times and the latest time was one too many. With everything you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and there also need to be consequences. This time there was a consequence for that.' Frank suggested the punishment applied only to this fixture and that he would 'follow up when I come home'. The infraction will heighten doubts over Bissouma's future. He has entered the final year of his contract with little sign a new deal is imminent and his three seasons at Tottenham have been decidedly mixed. The club suspended him from the trip to Leicester last August after he was recorded inhaling nitrous oxide and their former manager Ange Postecoglou said he 'sometimes lets the game drift by him' after the defeat by Fulham in March. Although the Super Cup sits below Uefa's three other major club competitions in terms of prestige, Frank played up the importance of following their Europa League win by toppling the Champions League holders. 'It's a massive game,' he said. 'A great challenge and an even bigger opportunity. That's how my brain works, I see opportunities instead of pressure. So for me, massive opportunity. We will definitely embrace it and we will do everything.' Spurs's squad for the coming Premier League season remains incomplete and they are trying to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace under the noses of Arsenal. Frank did not take the bait when asked about any deal for the forward. 'There are a lot of good players out there, there are also a few from the PSG team, but I don't think we can buy them right now.' he said. 'In general, players in and players out, I'm only speaking if something is done or not done.' On the brighter side, Dominic Solanke has recovered from an ankle injury that has plagued his summer and should take a place on the bench. Destiny Udogie is also available after a knee problem.

PSG 'are not unbeatable' - Davies and Vicario eye 'great things'

Paris St-Germain are not "invincible" and Tottenham are "ready to fight together" for Wednesday's Super Cup, says defender Ben Davies and goalkeeper Guglielmo get their season underway when they face Champions League winners PSG in will be the first opportunity for silverware for new boss Thomas Frank but, despite PSG losing in the Club World Cup final to Chelsea, it will still be a tough test against the French champions."It's quite clear we will be playing against one of the best teams in world football right now," Davies said."They have so much talent all across the pitch and it's definitely going to be a challenge."But, over the summer we saw that, whilst they played some incredible games, they are not unbeatable and invincible. We need to take some confidence from that and try and put our best foot forward to win the game tomorrow."Vicario, who will be playing in his home country when the sides step out at the Stadio Friuli, added: "I am one of the oldest players in the dressing room. Now is the moment to step up and to take responsibilities."I see a group of players ready to fight together. I don't want to give them any advice but we need to drive this team to the best possible version that we can achieve."We need to start doing that from tomorrow night. I think we can do great things together."

Texans place TE Brevin Jordan (knee) on injured reserve

August 12 - The Houston Texans placed tight end Brevin Jordan on injured reserve Tuesday, one day after he hurt his knee in practice. Multiple media reports noted that Jordan's injury is season ending. Jordan was injured after landing awkwardly in an unsuccessful attempt to reel in a seam pass from C.J. Stroud during an 11-on-11 drill during Monday's practice. Jordan initially was able to stand before falling back to the ground and grabbing his lower leg. He was then carted off the field. Jordan saw his season come to an end in Week 2 last year after tearing his ACL in a game against the Chicago Bears. "It's tough for everybody to see Brevin going down, knowing how much work he's put in to get back to this point of playing football and how excited he was to get back to playing football," Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters on Monday. Jordan, 25, has totaled 53 catches for 532 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 36 career games (12 starts) since being selected by the Texans in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Houston has Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover atop its tight end depth chart. The Texans signed offensive tackle Conor McDermott to fill the roster spot on Tuesday. McDermott, 32, last played in 2023 with the New England Patriots. He has started 17 of the 55 games in which he has played with the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Patriots since being selected by New England in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. --Field Level Media
