Indian smartphone market declined 7% in Q1 2025: Vivo gains ground as Xiaomi, Samsung stumble
Interestingly, despite the overall decline, the premium smartphone segment ( ₹ 25,000 and above) and the ultra-budget segment (below ₹ 7,000) recorded modest growth. In contrast, the value-for-money category ( ₹ 7,000– ₹ 25,000), which forms a bulk of the market, declined by 6% YoY.
Meanwhile, 5G smartphones made up 86% of the total shipments in Q1 2025 and saw a 14% overall YoY growth. Affordable 5G phones ranging between ₹ 8,000– ₹ 13,000 saw the biggest 100% jump in shipments.
Menka Kumari, Senior Analyst at CyberMedia Research (CMR), said in a blogpost, 'The <INR 10,000 5G smartphone segment witnessed over 500% YoY growth in Q1 2025. This reflects strong consumer appetite for affordable 5G smartphones. Brands such as Xiaomi, POCO, Motorola, and Realme are leading this surge. On the other hand, the 2G feature phone segment fell 17% YoY, while 4G feature phones declined sharply by 66% YoY.'
According to CMR, Vivo emerged as the top smartphone brand in India in Q1 2025, capturing a 20% market share and recording 18% year-on-year growth. Five of its models, Vivo Y29, T3 Lite, T3X, and T4X, contributed to nearly 43% of the brand's 5G shipments during the quarter.
Samsung held the second spot with an 18% market share but saw a 13% YoY decline in the value-for-money segment.
Xiaomi witnessed the steepest fall, slipping to a 13% market share with a 37% YoY decline. The brand struggled across both its value-for-money and affordable smartphone segments, the report noted.
In the feature phone segment, the report highlighted a 17% YoY decline in 2G phone shipments and a massive 66% drop in 4G feature phone shipments. Itel continues to lead the 2G segment with a 41% market share, followed by Lava at 31% and HMD at 19%.

Rupee rises 6 paise against US dollar
Last Updated: Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI) The rupee pared initial losses and settled on a higher note at 87.07 against the US dollar on Wednesday, up by 6 paise on the back of a rise in risk appetite in global markets. Forex traders said easing tensions over trade tariffs and hopes of peace between Russia and Ukraine enthused investors. Moreover, the proposed GST reforms and a recent credit rating upgrade by a foreign agency have bolstered confidence in the Indian economy. The rupee declined in the first half of the day on a positive US dollar and a recovery in crude oil prices. However, the domestic currency recovered losses on gains in domestic stock markets and possible foreign fund inflows, traders added. The local unit opened lower at 87.16 but later recovered losses to hit a high of 86.98 against the greenback, as GST rationalisation and easing worries over additional tariffs by the US supported investor sentiment. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee settled at 87.07, registering a gain of 6 paise over its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee appreciated 26 paise to close at 87.13 against the US dollar. 'We expect the rupee to trade with a positive bias on rise in risk appetite in the global markets amid easing tensions over trade tariffs and hopes of peace between Russia and Ukraine," said Anuj Chaudhary, Research Analyst, Commodities and Currencies, Mirae Asset Sharekhan. Upbeat domestic market sentiments also supported the local unit. 'USD/INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 86.60 to 87.30," Chaudhary said. Meanwhile, Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading higher by 0.67 per cent at USD 66.23 per barrel in futures trade, amid cautious optimism around the Ukraine-Russia conflict. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was lower by 0.06 per cent at 98.20. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex climbed 213.45 points to settle at 81,857.84, while the Nifty advanced 69.90 points to 25,050.55. Foreign Institutional Investors offloaded equities worth Rs 1,100.09 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday accused India of 'profiteering" by reselling Russian oil while sparing China for the same, saying it has 'diversified inputs of their oil". The remarks came amid strain in India-US relations after US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs totalling 50 per cent on India. This includes 25 per cent for New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil that will come into effect from August 27. He further said that this 'Indian arbitrage, buying cheap oil and reselling it as a product, has just sprung up during the war…is just unacceptable". This Popular Smartphone Brand Is Now Selling Electric SUVs. When Is It Coming To India?
Available in four trims - SU7, SU7 Pro, SU7 Max, and SU7 Ultra - the car has been positioned as a direct rival to Tesla's Model 3 Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi, best known for its smartphones, has reported record-breaking earnings in the second quarter of 2025 as its electric vehicle (EV) business gathers momentum. The company posted revenue of 116 billion Chinese yuan (about $16.1 billion), marking a 30.5% year-on-year increase, its highest ever. While Xiaomi's smartphone business held steady during the quarter, the real surge came from its EV segment, which has quickly become a growth engine. Xiaomi President Lu Weibing said the company aims to enter the European EV market by 2027, though he clarified there are no immediate plans for India. Company executives in India reiterated that the EV strategy will remain focused on the Chinese market for the next two to three years. Although Xiaomi's first electric sedan, the SU7, was displayed at an auto show in India earlier this year, the company has indicated that sales here are unlikely to begin before 2027. Officials stressed they are still studying Indian market conditions and government policies before taking any steps. Xiaomi formally set up its automobile division in September 2021 with headquarters in Beijing. In July 2024, it secured approval from Chinese regulators to manufacture autonomous EVs, enabling the company to independently produce cars. Its debut model, the SU7 sedan, made waves when it was unveiled in December 2023 and launched in March 2024. Within 24 hours, Xiaomi received 90,000 orders, and by the end of 2024, the figure had surged to 2,48,000 locked-in bookings. Available in four trims – SU7, SU7 Pro, SU7 Max, and SU7 Ultra – the car has been positioned as a direct rival to Tesla's Model 3, offering long range, high performance, and integration with Xiaomi's HyperOS ecosystem. Riding on the success of its sedan, Xiaomi entered the SUV market in June 2025 with the YU7, offered in three variants: YU7 (priced at 2,53,500 yuan), YU7 Pro (2,79,900 yuan), and YU7 Max (3,29,900 yuan). The reception was electric. Within three minutes of launch, 200,000 pre-orders were recorded, climbing to 2,89,000 in the first hour. The YU7 boasts a range of up to 835 km, outpacing Tesla's Model Y, along with high output of up to 690 bhp and ultra-fast charging. These features have cemented its place in the premium SUV segment and boosted Xiaomi's profile as a serious contender in the EV space. Looking ahead, Xiaomi has confirmed plans to introduce the YU9 in 2026. The SUV will be a range-extended electric vehicle (EREV), featuring a 1.5-litre turbo engine that functions as a generator. It will compete against established luxury rivals including Volvo and BMW, as well as China's own L9 and AITO M9. Xiaomi's rapid transformation from a smartphone maker into a dual-tech and mobility powerhouse signals how Chinese companies are reshaping the global EV market. For now, the focus remains on China and, soon, Europe, with India still a market under observation. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. FASTag Annual Pass Update: 200 highway trips for just INR 3,000: Everything you want to know about the yearly pass
FASTag is one of the best things that has been introduced for travellers. It is one thing that has solved a lot of issues, including toll booth traffic and making life easier for highway travellers. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), to make highways more affordable and convenient, launched an annual pass on 15 August 2025. The FASTag Annual Pass is a prepaid facility allowing private vehicle owners to take 200 toll-free trips across national highways and expressways for a fee of INR 3,000. The pass is valid for one year or 200 trips, whichever comes first. Let's have a look at some of the prime factors of FASTag Annual Pass: Eligibility The annual pass is only for private, non-commercial vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. Commercial vehicles such as taxis, buses, trucks can't use this. The pass is connected directly to the FASTag account and vehicle registration number (VRN) of the user. So it is also non-transferable. What happens if it is misused If a tag is found misused or linked only with a chassis number, it will be deactivated immediately. It is crucial to note that the pass applies only on NHAI and MoRTH-managed toll plazas. State highways, private toll roads, and parking facilities will continue to charge tolls through the standard pay-per-use FASTag system. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Click Here Undo How to buy and activate (Rajmarg Yatra app) Log in to the Rajmarg Yatra app or visit the NHAI official website. Choose the annual pass option Confirm vehicle details Pay INR 3,000 through UPI, debit/credit cards, or net banking Note: Wallet balances are not accepted If the vehicle's FASTag is already active and linked to a registration number, it's a quick activation. In most cases, the pass activates within two hours. It can take up to 24 hours in rare situations. Once active, users receive a confirmation SMS. Understanding 200 trips concept Every crossing at a toll plaza is counted as one trip. So, for open toll systems, every time you pass through a plaza, one trip is deducted. On closed toll roads such as certain expressways, the entire journey—from entry to exit—is treated as a single trip. The pass remains valid until either 200 trips are used or one year has passed. After that, the FASTag automatically switches back to the regular mode. How is it a money saver deal So understand this: Your one-way toll on national highways might cost between INR 70 to INR 100. In one year, you might end up paying INR 10,000–15,000 on tolls. But with the annual pass, the effective cost per crossing comes down to just INR 15– INR 20. For those who frequently commute between cities—say, from Mumbai to Surat, Delhi to Jaipur, or Bengaluru to Hyderabad—the savings can add up to INR 7,000 or more per year. This is absolutely the thing passengers wanted. With the introduction of the FASTag Annual Pass, the government aims to make highway travel smoother, cashless, and more affordable for millions of private vehicle owners.
