India will replace the skill side of it: Ponting on team's transition from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli
ANI Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket last month
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting expressed that while replacing legendary India batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma would be a hard thing to do in Test format, they have the quality and skill in their players to cope with this massive task better than other teams.
The five-test tour of England, starting June 20 at Leeds and lasting until August 2025, is set to be a heavy one for fans and players alike. With senior stars Rohit and Virat having retired from the longest format of the game, the onus lies on the Shubman Gill-led new-look Indian side to prove themselves away from home in tough English conditions and ensure that Indian cricket is safe.
Several newer talents and domestic cricket/Indian Premier League (IPL) performers like Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sai Sudharsan have earned a ticket to the UK as a part of the main squad. Speaking in the ICC Review as quoted by ICC, Ponting said, "It is always very hard to replace players like that that have been around for so long, that have played that much Test cricket. But if any country can do it and do it quickly, India can because of the amount of young talent that they have.""I have seen it firsthand for 10 years around the IPL, and we have seen the emergence of (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and these sorts of guys who have come into international cricket with India and done really well pretty much straight away."
"The skill side of it is one thing to replace, and I think India will replace the skill side of it easily enough, but the experience is the big thing that will be missing for them. So now, even with a young captain with Shubman Gill, they will still have some experience with KL Rahul and (Jasprit) Bumrah and these sort of guys.""But I think if you look at a rebuilding sort of phase, I think India can cope with it better than most other teams," he concluded.Rohit bid adieu to Test cricket last month, and a few days later, Virat bid his farewell to the format with a heartfelt note on Instagram.Rohit made his Test debut against West Indies in November 2013 and since then, Rohit featured in 67 Tests for India, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries and 18 fifties, his best score being 212. He is the 16th-highest run-getter in the format for India. After years of up and down performances, particularly away, the start of the ICC World Test Championship as a proper tournament revived his Test career as he went on to have a prolific run as an opener. In 40 Tests during WTC history, he made 2,716 runs at an average of 41.15, with nine centuries and eight fifties. His best score was 212. He is India's top run-getter, century maker in WTC history and overall at 10th among top run-getters.Whereas, Virat first represented India in Tests against West Indies in 2011 and in the coming years, became the country's biggest ambassador for the longest format, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 appearances, with 30 centuries and 31 fifties. He is the fourth-highest run-getter for India in Tests. He also made a massive impact as India's most successful Test captain, winning 40 out of 68 matches, leading them to numerous iconic wins overseas. As a leader, he developed a massive roster of fast bowling talent for India and was an advocate for top-level fitness and inculcated in the team a "win at all costs" attitude and ability to take on their opponents head-on.

Retired HC judge John Michael D'Cunha who convicted Jaya to probe Bengaluru stampede
BENGALURU: Karnataka govt tasked retired high court judge John Michael D'Cunha with submitting a report within a month on the June 4 stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium that killed 11 and wounded over 75 during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations, officials said Saturday. A govt notification on June 5 directed Justice D'Cunha - who gained national prominence in 2014 for convicting former Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case - to give priority to the stampede probe. He already heads inquiries into the pandemic medical procurement scam and oxygen-related deaths at Chamarajanagar hospital in Karnataka. His one-member commission - appointed on Aug 25, 2023, and set to conclude work by July 31 this year - has now been granted an extension till Aug 31 to accommodate the additional case. "Since the commission needs to prioritise the stampede and submit its report in a month, the term has been extended," the govt order read. CM Siddaramaiah's govt has launched a three-pronged investigation - judicial, magisterial, and CID, which took over the criminal probe Friday evening from Cubbon Park police. Bengaluru Urban deputy commissioner is heading the magisterial probe. CID officers inspected the stadium and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) office Saturday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? Two deputy SPs and several inspectors are part of the probe team. Police custody will likely be sought Monday for four key suspects already remanded in judicial custody: RCB marketing head Nikhil Sosale, 38; DNA Networks director Sunil Mathew, 49; ticketing official Shamanth SP, 38; and manager Kiran Kumar, 40. Three FIRs were filed earlier by Cubbon Park police before the handover. CID is expected to issue notices to additional accused in coming days, while also coordinating with hospitalised survivors. The magistrate probe is progressing in parallel, with Bengaluru Urban DC Jagadeesha G summoning over 25 wounded people to record statements on June 11. He said notices will be issued to police officers deployed during the stampede.

Rohit Sharma recalls mother's reaction after first encounter with Cheteshwar Pujara: ‘Mom, there is a player called…'
Cheteshwar Pujara made a career out of playing the kind of grinding innings that could single-handedly drain opposition teams of all stamina and momentum, setting up many of India's most famous Test and series victories. Even in his youth cricket days, Pujara had the tenacity and ability to play such innings, that left opposing cricketers scratching their heads and in search of answers. Former Indian Test captain and the recently-retired Rohit Sharma reflected on what it was like to face such a player as a young cricketer. Speaking at the launch of The Life of a Cricketer's Wife, a book written by Pujara's wife Puja Pubari, Rohit said: 'I still remember, team meetings only revolved around him (on) how to get him out, and if we don't get him out, probably we'd lose the game.' 'All I remember is that when I used to go to the ground, when I was 14-years-old, and when I came back in the evening, the colour of my face would be completely different,' reflected Rohit. 'Because he used to bat all day and we used to field in the sun for (even) 2-3 days.' In fact, said Rohit, it got to the point that his mother would begin to be concerned about his physical health after days spent fielding against Pujara. 'I still remember that my mother asked me a couple of times that when you go to play from home, you look different and when you come home, after a week or 10 days, you look different.' 'I would say, 'Mom, what do I do? There's a batsman by the name of Cheteshwar Pujara. He's been batting for three days'… so that is the first impression that we had of him,' said Pujara's long-time teammate, who undoubtedly was happy to spend his career playing alongside the steadfast batter rather than against him. Pujara continues to soldier away in Ranji Trophy cricket for Saurashtra, and hasn't announced his international retirement, meaning he is still available for selection for the Indian Test team. Rohit, meanwhile, called a day on his career, bequeathing captaincy of the Test team to Shubman Gill and solely focusing on the ODI team at an international level.

Three days after Bengaluru stampede, cricket association secretary & treasurer step down on moral grounds
Bengaluru: Days after the horrific stampede outside the city's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in which 11 people were killed and 75 injured, the secretary and treasurer of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) stepped down, taking moral responsibility for the disaster. Secretary A Shankar and treasurer AE Jairam tendered their resignations late Friday to association president Raghuram Bhat. On Saturday, Shankar and Jairam issued a joint press statement confirming their decision. "Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, though our role was very limited, we are taking moral responsibility. We have submitted our resignations from our respective posts as secretary and treasurer of KSCA," the statement read. At the emergency managing committee meeting on Saturday, which a majority of members opted to attend virtually, the duo's resignation was accepted. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Bhat, a former India spinner, explained: "The committee acknowledged the contribution of the secretary and treasurer and accepted their resignation." Asked if the rest of the office-bearers would also resign, Bhat said: "The committee will not be dissolved as of now. We are offering our full support to the investigating authorities." While KSCA polls are scheduled for Oct, the association has to convene an SGM within 45 days and elect a secretary and treasurer for the rest of the term. Until such time, the managing committee will run the show. Shankar and Jairam, both well-known chartered accountants, held the honorary positions for the past two and a half years. Their resignations come amid growing public anger and mounting pressure from various quarters demanding accountability from the cricketing body over the stampede. An FIR was filed against the two, along with some other KSCA officials, following Wednesday's sordid incident that prompted chief minister Siddaramaiah to order the arrest of KSCA officials responsible for the incident. With police on the hunt, Shankar and Jairam approached Karnataka high court on Friday, seeking anticipatory bail. The petition, which also named KSCA president Bhat, argued that the association and its office-bearers were not directly liable for what had happened. While the court granted interim protection from arrest, the resignations of Shankar and Jairam are being seen as a symbolic acceptance of moral responsibility. Will the international calendar hold? The prevailing circumstances have put a question mark on the preparedness of the state association for a hectic international calendar ahead, during which, Bengaluru is set to host the ICC Women's 50-over World Cup, with the opening match featuring India to be held in the city on Sept 30, apart from one semifinal (on Oct 30). The final on Nov 2 is scheduled to be held in either Bengaluru or Colombo (if Pakistan qualify). KSCA is also scheduled to host a three-match one-day series between India A and South Africa A from Nov 13-19. The crowd surge inside and the stampede outside on Wednesday left the stadium's exteriors and a section of the stands severely damaged, and it will be a race against time for the venue to be put back in shape. Govt increases compensation The state govt has increased the compensation from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh for the families of those killed in the stampede. The govt also said it was committed to providing free treatment to those injured. The opposition parties and the public had criticised the govt for initially announcing a Rs 10 lakh compensation, alleging that the state govt paid Rs 25 lakh to the kin of a man who was killed in Kerala after being attacked by a Karnataka elephant.
