Lok Sabha adjourned till 12 noon amid noisy protests by Opposition
When the House met at 11 am, opposition MPs, including those from the Congress, were on their feet, raising slogans and showing placards with their demand for discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar.
Initially, Speaker Om Birla tried to continue the business of the House — Question Hour — by allowing members to ask six questions related to several union ministries and departments amidst the din.
After about 15 minutes of proceedings, the Speaker asked the protesting members to go back to their seats and warned that if they try to damage government properties, he would be forced to take strong action against them.
'No one has the right to damage government properties. If you try to do so, I will be forced to take action," he said, adding there were instances in some assemblies where action had been taken against members for damaging government properties.
It was not immediately clear as to what the speaker was alluding to.
Birla also said that the kind of force the opposition members were using in sloganeering, it would have been good had they used similar kind of force in raising people's welfare issues.
As the opposition MPs ignored his pleas, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 noon.
The opposition has been demanding a discussion on the SIR exercise initiated by the Election Commission in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections there.
Barring discussions on Operation Sindoor in both House, Parliament has seen little business ever since the Monsoon session began on July 21 due to repeated adjournments initially due to opposition demand for discussion on Operation Sindoor and then demanding a discussion on SIR. PTI ACB DV DV

According to the State Department official, between 200 and 300 student visa holders were stripped of their documentation due to alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities. These revocations fall under provisions in the Immigration and Nationality Act, which makes any foreign national inadmissible to the US for links to terrorism or extremist behaviour. However, the majority of visa cancellations were due to criminal offences or immigration violations. The official stated that approximately 4,000-6,000 revocations were issued to individuals who had 'broken the law," including cases involving assault, burglary, and driving under the influence (DUI). Other reasons included visa overstays and violations of terms of stay. In addition to revocations, the Trump administration has also taken steps to make it harder for international students to gain admission to US universities. In recent months, federal scrutiny has increased around campus activism, particularly protests related to the Israel-Gaza conflict. The administration alleges that such demonstrations have often taken an antisemitic tone, creating a hostile environment for Jewish students and faculty. One notable case occurred in March 2025, when Rumeysa Ozturk, a PhD student at Tufts University, had her visa cancelled and was detained by federal agents. Ozturk was placed in ICE detention before a federal judge ordered her release in May. Several universities, particularly Ivy League institutions like Harvard University, Brown University, University of California, and University of Pennsylvania, have come under fire from the Trump administration for allegedly tolerating antisemitic activity on campus. Cooperative societies to get caste, gender reservation for top posts
Bengaluru: The Karnataka Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which introduces caste and gender-based reservation for both elected and nominated roles in cooperative societies, was passed in the assembly Monday. The bill provides for chairman and vice-chairman posts to be reserved on a rotation basis for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and women members — a system modelled on panchayat institutions. The amendment also extends reservation to members nominated to the board, earmarking positions for SC, ST, and general merit categories, with one of these compulsorily reserved for women. Crucially, nominated members will have voting rights and can contest elections for the board, chairman, and vice-chairman posts. The govt reintroduced the bill last week after incorporating changes. HK Patil , law and parliamentary affairs minister, who piloted the bill, said: "This bill seeks to revolutionise the cooperative sector, as it provides social justice by ensuring representation for underprivileged classes. It is the need of the hour, considering the social-political situation in the state." But several senior members raised objections. Former ministers GT Devegowda and Savadi opposed provisions that made asset declaration mandatory, voting powers for nominated members, and the roster system for top posts. They argued the measures amounted to govt interference in functioning of autonomous cooperative bodies. But Patil said the amendments were essential for social justice. Meanwhile, the assembly also passed The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2025, which makes engagement of minors a punishable offence. Under the amendment, individuals found guilty of arranging or facilitating engagement of minors will face up to two years in jail and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Women and child development minister Laxmi Hebbalakar, who piloted the bill, said child marriages are rampant and 1,828 complaints were registered in 2024-25. "Of this, 1,460 weddings were prevented, while 3,640 were solemnised. FIR was registered in 329 cases. The amendment envisages to eradicate the social scourge," said Hebbalkar. The Assembly also approved The Karnataka Devadasi (Prevention, Prohibition, Relief and Rehabilitation) Bill, 2025, that seeks to provide social, economic and health welfare schemes for former Devadasis.
