Tom Barlow's first career hat trick propels Fire to 7-1 victory over DC United
Tom Barlow finished with his first career hat trick after scoring two of four first-half goals by Chicago's front line and the Fire breezed to a 7-1 victory over D.C. United on Saturday night.
Maren Haile-Selassie found the net in the 8th minute for his first goal in his first start and 12th appearance of the season to give the Fire a quick lead. Jonathan Bamba scored for the third time in his first season in the league for a two-goal lead in the 24th minute.
Barlow scored his first goal of the season in the 30th minute and his second in the 44th as the Fire took a 4-0 lead into halftime. He finished the hat trick off in the 65th. Barlow has never scored more than four goals in a season.
Haile-Selassie and Bamba had assists on Barlow's second netter. Haile-Selassie's was his third this season after a career-high eight in 2024 and Bamba collected his seventh in his 16th career appearance — all starts.
Jonathan Dean and Rominigue Kouamé had assists on Haile-Selassie's goal and Philip Zinckernagel notched one on Bamba's score. It was the first assist for Kouamé in his third start and 10th career appearance. Dean's assist was his third this season and Zinckernagel's was his seventh in his first season in the league.
Zinckernagel opened the scoring in the second half in the 56th minute with his seventh goal in 15 appearances. Brian Gutiérrez came off the bench and scored in the first minute of stoppage time. It was his sixth goal, matching his career high set last season.
Dominique Badji entered in the second half and scored his first goal of the season in the 60th minute for DC United.
Jeffrey Gal finished with two saves for the Fire (7-5-4) in his second career start and third appearance.
Luis Barraza saved four shots for DC United (4-8-6), which was coming off its second road win this season — 2-1 over FC Cincinnati.
Six of Chicago's seven wins have come in 10 road matches. The Fire are 1-1-4 at home.
The Fire return home to play Nashville SC on Saturday. DC United travels to play Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

She's been a pretty entertaining bad girl, and I'd like to see her with some gold. Naomi wins. Lyra Valkyria vs. Becky Lynch Becky Lynch has helped make Lyra Valkyria a star. And Valkyria is doing her best to hang right there with one of the best women in the world. Guess what? She doesn't at all look out of place. Not in the ring, not even on the microphone where Lynch is one of the best. I thought Valkyria was the star last month and she was great leading up to this rematch. I think she does it again. Valkyria wins. Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso vs. John Cena and Logan Paul This match has two of my favorites (Jey Uso, Logan Paul) and two of the biggest stars in the world. But I have little interest in it. It will be fun, and I'm looking forward to what this match leads to, so that will be cool, but I have little interest in who wins. I'm banking on the bad guys winning, and I think Uso and Paul will make the match fun. Cena's matches haven't been good during this championship run. I hope he somehow wins without kicking someone low. Prediction: Logan Paul and John Cena win. Shaq shared that it had crossed his mind to keep the cash in the wallet, but once he realised who it belonged to he changed his mind. "I was walking one day in Beverly Hills and I found a wallet," the 53-year-old recalled during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden. "Usually when I find wallets, I just take all the money out and I just throw them," he joked. "But this was a nice wallet." The league took to social media to announce that Ogwumike has climbed to the No. 8 spot in the WNBA's all-time steals list with 628. This is yet another feather added to Ogwumike's cap as the 6-foot-2 forward continues to rewrite the WNBA history books. Ogwumike, 34, has nine All-Star nods to her name, seven All-Defensive team appearances, a seven-time All-WNBA forward and, of course, has a WNBA title under her belt. The Storm headed into Saturday's matchup with a 4-4 record, and they haven't exactly established themselves as one of the strongest contenders for this year's title. However, if Ogwumike is able to keep her foot on the gas, it would be foolish to count the Storm out.
