Fire look to avoid upset vs. St. Louis City, push unbeaten streak to 5

With points at a premium as they look to remain in playoff position, the Chicago Fire have no reason to take lowly St. Louis City for granted, especially after they just stunned one of the top teams in MLS. HT Image The Fire look to push their unbeaten run to five in a row Saturday night in Bridgeview, Ill., against a St. Louis side coming off last weekend's stunning 3-1 victory over Nashville SC, the third-place team in the Eastern Conference. Chicago (10-9-6, 36 points) owns the final playoff spot in the East but is far from comfortable, as the club is tied in points with the 10th-place New York Red Bulls. Though the Fire are amid a 2-0-2 stretch, they blew two one-goal leads during last weekend's 2-2 home draw versus Los Angeles FC. "It was very, very frustrating because we played really well, but it was good because we showed progress," said Chicago's Jonathan Bamba, who scored his fourth goal of the season. "We're playing really well together." Chicago hasn't allowed more than two goals in 11 consecutive regular-season contests. However, it also hasn't scored more than two in six straight matches. Looking to add some offensive depth, the Fire acquired midfielder Andre Franco from Portuguese club FC Porto this week. He totaled 20 goals and 16 assists in more than 140 club matches. Meanwhile, St. Louis (5-14-6 with 21 points) is looking to win two straight matches for just the second time in 2025 after last doing so in mid-March. The club had also only scored a season-high three goals twice all season before its big upset last weekend. Jaziel Orozco, Joao Klauss and Sangbin Jeong each scored versus Nashville SC. "We know that we are having ups and downs during the season, but you can see that the team is improving," said Klauss, who leads the team with eight goals and scored twice during a 3-1 home victory over Chicago last season. "We know that we have to do more." St. Louis has lost seven road games in a row and recorded its only away victory at the Los Angeles Galaxy on March 9. The club also lost its only previous trip to Chicago, 1-0, in May 2023. St. Louis will try to contain Fire All-Star Philip Zinckernagel, who has 10 goals with 12 assists in 2025. --Field Level Media

Former Spurs star Son makes LA debut

PA Media/dpa Lonodn Former Tottenham star Son Heung-Min made his highly anticipated debut for LAFC as the club drew 2-2 with the Chicago Fire. Just three days after being announced as the club's latest signing he made his debut in Illinois, entering the game in the 61st minute as a late substitute. The scores were level at 1-1 when the 33-year-old entered, but Chicago soon pulled ahead through Jonathan Bamba. Son helped the visitors hit back, drawing a penalty from Chicago defender Carlos Teran, which Denis Bouanga converted for the 81st-minute equaliser. The Korean star then nearly stole the win for LAFC in stoppage time, only to be denied by a last-ditch sliding block. LAFC will next face New England Revolution on Saturday.

Tom Barlow's first career hat trick propels Fire to 7-1 victory over DC United

Tom Barlow finished with his first career hat trick after scoring two of four first-half goals by Chicago's front line and the Fire breezed to a 7-1 victory over D.C. United on Saturday night. Maren Haile-Selassie found the net in the 8th minute for his first goal in his first start and 12th appearance of the season to give the Fire a quick lead. Jonathan Bamba scored for the third time in his first season in the league for a two-goal lead in the 24th minute. Barlow scored his first goal of the season in the 30th minute and his second in the 44th as the Fire took a 4-0 lead into halftime. He finished the hat trick off in the 65th. Barlow has never scored more than four goals in a season. Haile-Selassie and Bamba had assists on Barlow's second netter. Haile-Selassie's was his third this season after a career-high eight in 2024 and Bamba collected his seventh in his 16th career appearance — all starts. Jonathan Dean and Rominigue Kouamé had assists on Haile-Selassie's goal and Philip Zinckernagel notched one on Bamba's score. It was the first assist for Kouamé in his third start and 10th career appearance. Dean's assist was his third this season and Zinckernagel's was his seventh in his first season in the league. Zinckernagel opened the scoring in the second half in the 56th minute with his seventh goal in 15 appearances. Brian Gutiérrez came off the bench and scored in the first minute of stoppage time. It was his sixth goal, matching his career high set last season. Dominique Badji entered in the second half and scored his first goal of the season in the 60th minute for DC United. Jeffrey Gal finished with two saves for the Fire (7-5-4) in his second career start and third appearance. Luis Barraza saved four shots for DC United (4-8-6), which was coming off its second road win this season — 2-1 over FC Cincinnati. Six of Chicago's seven wins have come in 10 road matches. The Fire are 1-1-4 at home. The Fire return home to play Nashville SC on Saturday. DC United travels to play Real Salt Lake on Saturday.
