Fire look to avoid upset vs. St. Louis City, push unbeaten streak to 5

With points at a premium as they look to remain in playoff position, the Chicago Fire have no reason to take lowly St. Louis City for granted, especially after they just stunned one of the top teams in MLS. HT Image
The Fire look to push their unbeaten run to five in a row Saturday night in Bridgeview, Ill., against a St. Louis side coming off last weekend's stunning 3-1 victory over Nashville SC, the third-place team in the Eastern Conference.
Chicago (10-9-6, 36 points) owns the final playoff spot in the East but is far from comfortable, as the club is tied in points with the 10th-place New York Red Bulls. Though the Fire are amid a 2-0-2 stretch, they blew two one-goal leads during last weekend's 2-2 home draw versus Los Angeles FC.
"It was very, very frustrating because we played really well, but it was good because we showed progress," said Chicago's Jonathan Bamba, who scored his fourth goal of the season.
"We're playing really well together."
Chicago hasn't allowed more than two goals in 11 consecutive regular-season contests. However, it also hasn't scored more than two in six straight matches.
Looking to add some offensive depth, the Fire acquired midfielder Andre Franco from Portuguese club FC Porto this week. He totaled 20 goals and 16 assists in more than 140 club matches.
Meanwhile, St. Louis (5-14-6 with 21 points) is looking to win two straight matches for just the second time in 2025 after last doing so in mid-March. The club had also only scored a season-high three goals twice all season before its big upset last weekend. Jaziel Orozco, Joao Klauss and Sangbin Jeong each scored versus Nashville SC.
"We know that we are having ups and downs during the season, but you can see that the team is improving," said Klauss, who leads the team with eight goals and scored twice during a 3-1 home victory over Chicago last season.
"We know that we have to do more."
St. Louis has lost seven road games in a row and recorded its only away victory at the Los Angeles Galaxy on March 9. The club also lost its only previous trip to Chicago, 1-0, in May 2023.
St. Louis will try to contain Fire All-Star Philip Zinckernagel, who has 10 goals with 12 assists in 2025.

Fans put up an incredible tifo of the Portuguese star, while another banner read 'We'll remember you when you walk in fields of gold.' Wolves fans with an absolutely incredible tribute to their former player Diogo Jota ❤️ — The Sun Football ⚽ (@TheSunFootball) August 16, 2025 Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, his parents, and former team-mate Ruben Neves, were all in attendance at the Molineux for the heartfelt homage. Jota tragically passed away in a car crash in Spain, which also claimed the life of his brother, Andre Silva. He died on July 3, 2025, in Zamora, Spain, at just 28 years old, turning Liverpool's title joy from the previous season into sorrow. He married his partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, just weeks before his untimely death. The couple had three children together. Jota began his youth career at Gondomar in 2005 before moving to Paços de Ferreira, where he made his senior debut in 2014. In 2016, he transferred to Atletico Madrid but was immediately loaned to Porto for a season and then to Wolves in 2017. His impressive performances for Wolves led to a permanent move to Molineux. Jota's remarkable achievements at Wolves, including helping the team win the EFL Championship title, earned him a transfer to Premier League giants Liverpool in 2020. With Liverpool, Jota won the Premier League, the FA Cup in the 2021-22 season, and the EFL League Cup. He was also part of the Portuguese team that won the UEFA Nations League in both the 2018/19 and 2024/25 seasons. Born Diogo Jose Teixeira da Silva, he adopted the surname 'Jota' to distinguish himself from teammates with similar names in the youth academy. An avid gamer, Jota formed his own eSports team, Diogo Jota eSports, later renamed Luna Galaxy, and topped the FIFA 21 Championship table in February of that year. A versatile player capable of playing various roles along the front line, Jota clinched the Premier League title with Liverpool a month ago and followed it up with his second UEFA Nations League title. Manchester United posted a 4-0 triumph at the Molineux on Saturday as Pep Guardiola and Co. got their campaign off to a positive start against Wolves. Erling Haaland netted twice, while Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki struck once each in the demolition job of the Wolves in the sides' opening game of the season. Haaland opened the scoring in the 34th minute of the game before Reijnders got his name on the scoresheet three minutes later for his first PL strike. Haaland doubled his tally in the 61st minute of the fixture before another new signing, Cherki, put the finishing touches on the game with a goal nine minutes from time. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Liverpool strike late to beat Bournemouth as Jota remembered in Premier League opener

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool struck twice in the final minutes through Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah to overcome a battling Bournemouth 4-2 in a thrilling start to the Premier League season on Friday. Antoine Semenyo looked to have rescued a point for the Cherries by scoring twice, after he had reported an incident of racial abuse from a fan, to cancel out Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo's strikes for the defending champions. But on an emotive night as Anfield remembered Diogo Jota, Chiesa was the unlikely hero as the injury-hit Italian fired the home side back in front before Salah rounded off the scoring. Liverpool's joy at celebrating a record-equalling 19th English top-flight title turned to tragedy during the off-season as forward Jota was killed alongside his brother Andre Silva in a car accident last month at the age of 28. Just 11 days prior to the accident, the Portuguese international had married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children. A large banner at the front of The Kop stand read: "Rute, Dinis, Duarte, Mafalda - Anfield will always be your home. You'll Never Walk Alone."
