Are we ready to handle market manipulations in electricity derivatives?

With the imminent launch of electricity derivatives in India, regulatory preparedness has become a matter of urgency. The recent Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) order against Jane Street Group (JSG) offers a cautionary tale of strategic exploitation in derivative markets — one that India's electricity sector cannot afford to ignore.
The Jane Street case: A wake-up call
The JSG case exposed classic intraday manipulation. The group purchased large volumes of BANKNIFTY index and constituent stocks early in the trading day, driving prices upward. Concurrently, it took reverse positions in the options market. Later, they offloaded their holdings, pulling down prices and reaping disproportionate profits in the derivative segment, while absorbing manageable losses in the cash market.
This trading pattern, which came to light through a US court case in April 2024, evaded Sebi and exchange surveillance for over 15 months until interim orders were finally issued on July 3, 2025. Notably, the detection did not stem from domestic oversight but through disclosures in litigation abroad.
Sebi's timeline illustrates the vulnerability of surveillance systems, even when both cash and derivative markets are governed by the same regulator (Sebi) and the exchange ecosystem is tightly knit (NSE). The strategy deployed by JSG hinged on exploiting illiquidity in the cash segment and leveraging high liquidity in derivatives—particularly BANKNIFTY options around expiry periods.
Electricity spot markets: The challenge of dual regulation
The electricity market, structured differently, introduces additional layers of complexity. Three power exchanges—Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), Power Exchange India Limited (PXIL), and Hindustan Power Exchange (HPX) — serve primarily the Day Ahead Market (DAM) and Real-Time Market (RTM). IEX dominates both, handling roughly 3.9 per cent and 2.47 per cent of national generation respectively, amounting to just 7 GW and 4.8 GW in traded capacity. These figures do not reflect a truly liquid market.
Further complicating matters, derivative contracts will be settled at prices derived from IEX and PXIL — despite PXIL's minimal volumes. In contrast to equities, where Sebi governs both segments, electricity markets have split jurisdiction: the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (Cerc) oversees spot contracts, while Sebi regulates derivatives.
Some of the large power generators individually control substantial capacity. As such, their ability to influence prices in illiquid markets is undeniable, especially since comprehensive trade disclosures aren't mandated under current protocols.
Launch of electricity derivatives: Regulatory coordination is key
With derivative contracts having debuted on MCX (July 10, 2025) and set to debut on NSE (July 14, 2025), regulatory silos present risks. While volume caps have been prescribed to prevent distortions, these are not fail-proof. Coordination between Sebi and Cerc must be seamless. Miscommunication or lag in action could have ripple effects — raising costs for electricity consumers and undermining market integrity.
The JSG episode underscores the need for real-time surveillance, rapid response frameworks, and clear inter-regulatory protocols. If Sebi's mechanisms struggled with manipulations in tightly monitored equity markets, can the electricity sector — divided between two regulators — claim immunity?
Time to ringfence and reform
India's electricity derivative market is at a formative stage. This moment demands a forward-looking approach. Regulators must not only anticipate the nature of manipulative strategies but act decisively to prevent their execution. Surveillance infrastructure must be upgraded, communication lines clarified, and cross-market behaviour monitored in tandem.
Regulatory failures in one segment must not cascade into others. It is imperative for Sebi and Cerc to insulate their constituencies, proactively guard consumer interests, and evolve with the market. While early action may have been missed, the JSG case offers a chance to set the ball rolling before it's too late.

Stocks to buy under ₹100: Experts recommend six shares to buy today — 21 July 2025

Stocks to buy under ₹ 100: In the last session of the previous week, the Indian stock market witnessed sharp selling. Among the key benchmark indices, Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex lost over half a per cent, while the Bank Nifty index lost close to one per cent. Wipro, Bajaj Finance, and Tata Steel showcased strength, emerging as the top performers on the Nifty. Conversely, Axis Bank, Shriram Finance and BEL concluded the session as major losers. Trading volumes on the NSE cash market were slightly lower by 2% compared to yesterday. The broader market also experienced profit booking, mirroring the benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell by 0.70%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined by 0.82%. Market breadth remained negative, with declining stocks outnumbering advancing ones on the BSE, as indicated by an advance-decline ratio of 0.70. Amongst the sectoral indices, Media, Metal, and IT managed to end up as major gainers, showcasing some resilience. However, Nifty Private banks, Consumer durables, and Financial services faced the steepest declines, contributing significantly to the overall market fall. On the Indian stock market's outlook today, Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research — Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal, said, "Overall, we expect the market to remain in consolidation mode amid continued global trade uncertainty and a subdued start to the Q1FY26 earnings season. Key results on Monday include Ultratech Cement, Eternal, IDBI Bank, Havells, and Oberoi Realty, among others." Speaking on the outlook of the Nifty 50 today, Vaishali Parekh said, "The Nifty 50 index once again lost control and indicating a lower top formation on the daily chart slipped below the important 25,000 zone to slightly weaken the bias and has arrived near the crucial support zone area of the 50EMA level at 24,900 which needs to be sustained to maintain the overall trend intact. Also, the base of the ascending channel pattern on the daily chart lies near the 24,900 zone, which is at stake, and the much-awaited results of the heavyweight giants – HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank would be released, which would decide the next course of the market. For the bias to improve, the index must decisively move past the 25,250 zone." Asked about the outlook of the Bank Nifty index, Shiju Kuthupalakkal, Senior Manager of Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher, said, 'The Bank Nifty index succumbed to heavy profit booking post the weak result outcome of Axis Bank, which dragged the index to breach below the near-term support of the 56,600 zone and has slightly weakened the bias with the next major and crucial support positioned near the 50EMA zone at the 55,900 level, which needs to be sustained. On the upside, as mentioned earlier, it would need to breach above the resistance zone of 57,600 level and expect fresh higher targets of 58,500 and 60,000 levels in the coming days.' Regarding stocks to buy today, Sumeet Bagadia, Executive Director at Choice Broking; Mehul Kothari, Deputy Vice President of technical Research at Anand Rathi; Sugandha Sachdeva, Founder of SS WealthStreet; and Anshul Jain, Head of Research at Lakshmishree Investment, recommended these six intraday stocks for today under ₹ 100: Nova Agritech, Manali Petrochemicals, Yes Bank, UCO Bank, Shriram Properties, and Jagran Prakashan. 1] Nova Agritech: Buy at ₹ 58.97, Target ₹ 64, Stop Loss ₹ 57; and 2] Manali Petrochemicals: Buy at ₹ 79.25, Target ₹ 85, Stop Loss ₹ 76. 3] Yes Bank: Buy at ₹ 20.17, Target ₹ 23, Stop Loss ₹ 19; and 4] UCO Bank: Buy at ₹ 32.13, Target ₹ 36, Stop Loss ₹ 30. 5] Jagran Prakashan: Buy at ₹ 74.20, Targets ₹ 77.60, ₹ 78.30, Stop Loss ₹ 72.50. 6] Shriram Properties: Buy at ₹ 96.40, Target ₹ 102, Stop Loss ₹ 92. Nifty 50, Sensex today: What to expect from Indian stock market in trade on July 21

The Indian stock market benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are likely to open flat on Monday, tracking mixed global market cues. The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a muted start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 25,019 level, a discount of nearly 13 points from the Nifty futures' previous close. On Friday, the domestic equity market ended lower, with the benchmark Nifty 50 slipping below 25,000 level. The Sensex tanked 501.51 points, or 0.61%, to close at 81,757.73, while the Nifty 50 settled 143.05 points, or 0.57%, lower at 24,968.40. Here's what to expect from Sensex, Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty today: Sensex, on daily and intraday charts, is holding lower top patterns, and on weekly charts, it has formed a bearish candle, which is largely negative. 'We believe that the short-term market texture is weak, but a fresh sell-off is possible only after the dismissal of 81,600. Below this level, Sensex is likely to retest the levels of 80,700 - 80,400. On the flip side, the 50-day SMA (Simple Moving Average) or 82,100 and 82,300 would act as crucial resistance zones for short-term traders,' said Amol Athawale, VP-technical Research, Kotak Securities. He believes if Sensex manages to trade above 82,300, it could bounce back to the 20-day SMA or 83,000, while further upside potential could lift the index up to 83,400 - 83,600. Nifty 50 witnessed sharp weakness and closed the day lower on July 18, forming a reasonable negative candle on the daily chart, which indicates an attempt of downside breakout of the immediate support. 'The bullish chart pattern like higher tops and bottoms seems to have been negated and we observe the beginning of bearish chart pattern like lower tops and bottoms formation on the daily chart. The recent swing high of 25,255 could now be considered as a new lower top of the pattern,' said Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities. According to him, the underlying trend of Nifty 50 remains weak, and a slide below 24,900 levels could open more weakness down to 24,500 in this week. However, any pullback rally from here could find strong overhead resistance around 25,250. Om Mehra, Technical Research Analyst, SAMCO Securities noted that for the first time in several sessions, Nifty 50 closed below its 50-day SMA, and there was also a negative crossover between the 9-EMA and 20-EMA, signalling a potential shift in short-term momentum. 'While the broader trend remains upward, the near-term outlook has shifted to cautious. Unless Nifty 50 reclaims 25,240 and sustains above the short-term moving averages, the trend may remain weak. Currently, a shift from a buy-on-dip stance to a more selective sell-on-rise approach would be preferred for the next few sessions,' said Mehra. Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivative Research, SBI Securities highlighted that on the weekly chart, Nifty 50 formed a bearish candle with a lower high and lower low's structure — a classic indication of downward momentum. Throughout 'The zone of 24,940 - 24,900 will act as immediate support for the Nifty 50 index as it is the confluence of the 50-day EMA level and 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level of its prior upward rally (24,473 - 25,669). If the index slips below the 24,900 level, then the next crucial support is placed at the 24,700 level. On the upside, the zone of 25,130 - 25,160 will act as an immediate hurdle for the index,' Shah said. VLA Ambala, Co-Founder of Stock Market Today said that on technical charts, Nifty 50 established a very bearish pattern on the daily time frame and a 'three black crows' formation on the weekly chart. 'In this situation, I suggest maintaining a 'sell on rise' strategy until we reach key support levels. Considering these aspects, we can expect Nifty 50 to gather support between 24,750 and 24,680, and face resistance near 25,100 and 25,170 in today's market session,' Ambala said. Bank Nifty ended 545.80 points, or 0.96%, lower at 56,283.00 on Friday, and declined 0.83% for the week. 'Bank Nifty broke its short-term swing low which was around 56,590 and formed a red candle on both the daily and weekly charts, signalling weakness. The next major support for the Bank Nifty is placed near 55,940, where 50-DEMA is placed followed by 55,150, while on the upside, 57,280 will act as strong resistance. As long as the index remains below 57,280, short-term traders are advised to adopt a sell-on-bounce strategy,' said Hrishikesh Yedve, AVP Technical and Derivative Research, Asit C. Mehta Investment Interrmediates Ltd. Pravesh Gour, Senior Technical Analyst at Swastika Investmart Ltd. noted that the Bank Nifty index slipped below its 20-day SMA and upward trendline, indicating a loss of short-term momentum. 'Bank Nifty has turned the 56,900 at 20-SMA act as an immediate resistance. If the index sustains below this, it may test crucial support at 56,150 and 55,500 in the coming week. A breakdown below these levels could extend the decline towards 55,000 – 54,800. However, a close above 56,900 may trigger short-covering, pushing the index back towards 57,200 – 57,500,' said Gour. According to Puneet Singhania, Director at Master Trust Group, the broader trend remains intact with support from the 55-day EMA and the ascending trendline. 'Key support is placed at 56,000; a decisive break may lead to 55,500. On the upside, 56,700 acts as immediate resistance, and a breakout above this could reignite buying interest, targeting 57,100. Traders are advised to adopt a buy-on-dips approach near key support levels while maintaining caution amid prevailing market volatility,' said Singhania.
