Scholarship to fund research on currents

Being locked in a chiller in the basement sounds like something from a horror movie.
But for Natalie-Jane Reid, it is something she has wanted for ages.
The 40-year-old has won a $10,000 Antarctica New Zealand Ella Yelich-O'Connor Antarctic Doctoral Scholarship, which will allow her to do experimental work using sediments, and explore how ocean currents have changed around Antarctica.
"I returned to the University of Otago after having children, when my dream PhD project became available.
"I'm really excited and grateful to receive this scholarship. This will help advance my research."
She said Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) was a key driver of global ocean circulation and climate.
Despite its importance, its long-term variability was poorly understood because of limited observational records.
Models suggested AABW formation was vulnerable to climate change, but there were still large uncertainties with all model predictions.
She said palaeoceanographic records could reveal past AABW dynamics, but a reliable proxy for present speed was lacking.
"Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS), measured on sediments, offers a potential new technique which could be used to determine ancient sea-floor current speeds, as it records the alignment of magnetic minerals shaped by bottom currents.
"Though widely accessible and easy to measure, AMS has not yet been calibrated to current velocity."
Her PhD project aimed to develop a new paleocurrent proxy using AMS and apply it to reconstruct deep ocean current velocities in the Ross Sea.
As part of her research, she is developing a sediment flume in which she will simulate different deep ocean current speeds, to see how these affect the AMS.
In the second part of the study, she will measure AMS in sediment cores, to determine current strength since the last ice age.
"This scholarship gives me the freedom to take a new and ambitious approach to palaeoceanography."
While she would not get to go down to the Antarctic to do her research, she was still delighted about spending long hours in a large chiller in the basement of the geology department.
"I'm keeping my water very cold and salty, just like Antarctic bottom water."
Ella Yelich-O'Connor (also known as New Zealand singer/songwriter Lorde) spent a week at Scott Base in 2019, which inspired her to create a memoir and photo-book titled Going South .
Proceeds from the sale of the book now fund the scholarship.

An Australian-led team of researchers compared the complexity of the songs composed by the aquatic mammals to those of other animals – as well as human musicians like the Beatles and Mozart. Lucinda Chambers, a bioacoustics PhD student at Australia's University of New South Wales, told AFP that people are often surprised when they hear the 'otherworldly' hoots and trills sung by leopard seals. 'It kind of sounds like sound effects from an 80s sci-fi movie,' said the lead author of a new study in the journal Scientific Reports. During the spring breeding season, male leopard seals dive underwater and perform their songs for two minutes before returning to the surface for air. They then repeat this performance for up to 13 hours a day, according to the study.

PHOTO: GERARD O'BRIEN A lack of tertiary science major social cohesion, and nobody being "mates" has inspired two University of Otago students to kick-start an association. Otago Biochemistry and Genetics Student Association (OBiGSA) co-presidents Liam Young and Cushla Bridges both came up with the idea after realising people studying the two "closely related" disciplines did not really know each other very well outside the lecture theatre. Miss Bridges said "basically none of us were mates outside of class". "We thought that we would make this club so that everyone could come together and have events like this, but also fun things. "We've had a quiz night, we're going to have like a movie night, a karaoke night, that sort of thing as well." The demand for a student association turned out to be very high and the room of their official launch on Wednesday was packed to the rafters and a sellout event. Miss Bridges said they had sold about 120 tickets. "We didn't expect it, but also we pushed quite hard for it, so I don't know what we were expecting." Mr Young said they celebrated the launch by getting to "pick the brains" of industry experts at a scientific panel. "We're basically asking them questions that you just can't find on Google ... Google and ChatGPT, they tell us everything and they seem to know everything — we're asking the humans something a bit more thought-provoking." He said they wanted some specialists to share their opinionated and controversial thoughts about various science topics. At the event yesterday were students from a range of majors, including anatomy, physiology, microbiology, immunology majors, biochemistry, genetics and zoology. Mr Young and Miss Bridges hoped the association lasted long after they left the university. "You've got to give the dream to someone else eventually," Mr Young said.

Photo / Tomas Munita via the New York Times Landscapes left behind by ancient rivers and buried beneath the Antarctic ice may affect the rate of ice loss, researchers report in Nature Geoscience. The team used radio echo sounding, a technique that measures ice thickness using radar, to study the east Antarctic ice sheet between Princess Elizabeth Land and George V Land in Antarctica. Parts of the ice sheet are thought to be particularly susceptible to climate change because the land beneath it contains huge troughs that let warming ocean water reach the ice, causing rapid shrinking. Radar measurements of the thickness elevation of the ice revealed a 2100 mile (3380km) stretch of previously undiscovered flat surfaces beneath the ice. The surfaces had never been mapped.
