Mamelodi Sundowns boss calls out unfair recognition

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso isn't holding back. Since his arrival in December, the Portuguese coach has transformed the Tshwane-based giants into an unstoppable force. Replacing Manqoba Mngqithi after a turbulent start, Cardoso has steered Masandawana to yet another historic milestone.
Under his leadership, Sundowns clinched their eighth consecutive Premiership league title and secured a coveted spot in the CAF Champions League final, where they'll face Egyptian powerhouse Pyramids FC. But despite their dominance, Cardoso believes the club isn't getting the recognition it truly deserves.
'I know that Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have a lot of fans, but I also know that this club that I represent has done a wonderful job in representing South Africa,' Cardoso told MSW , as quoted by FARPost .
While Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates dominate headlines due to their large fan bases and long-standing rivalries. Cardoso argues that Sundowns have become the true flag bearers of South African football on the continent.
'When a club wins in South Africa for so many times and years in a row, is representing the country in the way it does, better than anyone in the last ten years, that respect should be given to this group of players,' he said.
Cardoso, though new to the local game, quickly noticed a glaring difference between Sundowns' accomplishments and the acknowledgement they received.
'And sometimes…I know I'm new here but already I can see, that's not how people see this.'
Cardoso also praised his players' impact on the national team, reinforcing Sundowns' role in Bafana Bafana's recent resurgence.
'It makes me proud that Mamelodi Sundowns is the base of the national team of South Africa, it makes me proud to see how many players are selected,' he added.
He believes the club's dominance should also reflect in local awards.
'I hope that the [PSL] awards of the season are given in general to Mamelodi Sundowns because indeed the trophies, performances, data and numbers are there.'
Miguel Cardoso has sent a clear message, that Sundowns aren't just winning, they're redefining South African football. With silverware, stats, and continental credibility to back them up, the coach is demanding the respect he feels the team has more than earned.
Do Mamelodi Sundowns get the respect they really deserve?
