Hijacking hotspots in Pretoria exposed: Avoid these areas
Hijackings in Pretoria are surging, with Mamelodi East, Akasia, and Sunnyside emerging as the city's most dangerous hotspots. Hijackers are zeroing in on Pretoria, with Mamelodi East, Akasia, and Olievenhoutbosch ranking among the country's most dangerous precincts for carjackings. According to the latest crime statistics released by SAPS for the period January to March 2025, these Tshwane-based stations recorded some of the highest hijacking figures nationwide—Mamelodi East with 65 cases, Akasia with 58, and Olievenhoutbosch with 51. These numbers place all three precincts in the national top 30 for aggravated robberies, highlighting a worrying trend for motorists in the capital. While Gauteng recorded a general decline in carjackings, Tshwane remains a key target area, with criminals favouring high-traffic routes, driveways, and intersections to strike. Here are the hot spots: Mamelodi East – 65 cases Akasia – 58 cases Olievenhoutbosch – 51 cases Sunnyside – High risk zone (frequently listed in trio crime stats) Pretoria West – Noteworthy activity linked to aggravated robberies Mamelodi West – Not in the top 30 but consistently flagged in past stats Temba – Previously listed among high-risk stations for violent crimes. Eersterust and Garsfontein – Not top-ranked but noted for related robbery and theft activity Residents are urged to remain vigilant, especially during the early morning and evening hours, when most of these incidents typically occur. Meanwhile, Paul Visser from the Pretoria ICE Community Network said here are the most targeted vehicles in the country now: VW Polo Toyota Hilux Ford Ranger Toyota Corolla Cross Toyota Fortuner Haval Jolion Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Haval H6 Chery Tiggo 7 Pro These models are often targeted due to their resale value, parts demand, and, increasingly, use in cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates. SuperSport retain their Betway Premiership status
On that occasion, Christian Saile had handed United an early lead in the fourth minute, before Velemseni Ndwandwe drew Arrows level. The fixture resumed with just 45 minutes of the second half to be played, after the original match was abandoned three months ago due to a power failure. ALSO READ: Could the Premiership relegation battle be decided in court? On that occasion, Christian Saile had handed United an early lead in the fourth minute, before Velemseni Ndwandwe drew Arrows level. The match was initially set to mark Gavin Hunt's milestone of 1,000 games in charge in South Africa's top-flight football. However, the veteran coach was dismissed in March after a string of disappointing results, with Andre Arendse taking over the reins on an interim basis. Needing only a point to steer clear of the relegation play-offs, SuperSport approached the rescheduled encounter with caution. The Tshwane-based outfit were content to concede possession, defending deep in their own half for much of the match. Arrows struggled to break down a well-organised United side that was clearly playing for a draw. Aside from half-chances for Samir Nurković and substitute Bradley Grobler, SuperSport offered little going forward in a largely uneventful second half. The result sees SuperSport finish 14th on the log with 27 points from the revised 28-game season. ALSO READ: Tovey blasts Chiefs' 'not good at all' season Cape Town City also conclude their campaign on 27 points, but Arendse's charges edge them due to a superior goal difference. On the other hand, Arrows end their campaign in 12th position on the log standings, and two points outside the top eight. Manqoba Mngqithi's team needed to win by an avalanche of goals to boost their chances of sneaking into the top half of the log. Royal AM expulsion from the premiership means that they are essentially relegated as the league finishes with 15 teams. Barring any legal disputes, The Citizens will now contest the relegation play-off mini-league against ORBIT College and Casric Stars who finished second and third respectively in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Durban City, have secured automatic promotion to the elite tier of South African football.

PSL crisis deepens as Motsepe Foundation Championship dispute halts promotion play-offs
The eligibility of Durban City's Saziso Magawana is under scrutiny as the NFD awaits to see who will be promoted and relegated from the league. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix The PSL's reputation and operational integrity hang in the balance as stakeholders grapple with uncertainty, while disputes surrounding the Motsepe Foundation Championship (National First Division) escalate daily. Two weeks ago, the PSL announced that the promotion-relegation play-offs would commence on Tuesday. However, this will not go ahead due to a tense standoff involving teams who claim that the Championship winners, Durban City, fielded an improperly registered player, Saziso Magawana, during the season. Cape Town Spurs and the Tshwane-based JDR Stars are the Championship clubs leading the legal challenge. Last week, the PSL's disciplinary committee dismissed JDR Stars' case. The PSL prosecutor, advocate Zola Majavu, confirmed the dismissal but stated that the club could appeal the outcome, which Stars promptly did. Majavu said: "Out of an abundance of caution, the league, represented by myself as the prosecutor, directed all parties that in the event they wished to exercise their appeal rights, such appeals must be referred directly and immediately to arbitration.' The following day, the PSL's disciplinary committee was scheduled to hear Spurs' protest. However, Spurs' legal team objected to the same PSL officials presiding over their case. As a result, both JDR Stars' appeal and Spurs' protest will be heard by the arbitration board of Safa on Tuesday. The timeline for this intervention remains unclear, adding further strain to an already charged atmosphere. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ These latest developments mean that the NFD champions cannot be confirmed, and their promotion cannot be validated. The outcome of the arbitration may determine the final log positions of all the teams and who will participate in the promotion play-offs. The matter of automatic NFD relegation is also unresolved. Currently, Spurs and Leruma United will drop to the Safa Second Division but it is possible that City not only lose the championship, but are also relegated. Complicating matters further is the non-decision regarding the outcome of the SuperSport United vs Golden Arrows Betway Premiership fixture. The match was postponed in late February due to load-shedding and was suspended at 1–1. United currently occupy the promotion/relegation play-off spot in the elite division, one point behind Cape Town City. A win against Arrows would see Matsatsantsa a Pitori leapfrog the Citizens and avoid the humiliation of contesting the play-offs. Earlier this week, following their final game of the season, interim City coach Diogo Peral criticised the situation, saying: 'It's a bit of a joke actually, but it is what it is ... We're planning for the play-offs, watching the opposition we'll be coming up against, and we've already travelled to watch some of their games, so the planning is well on the way already.' If the arbitration process maintains the status quo, City would face Orbit College and Casric Stars in the mini-league. Nonetheless, in recent weeks, various clubs have raised concerns about the integrity of the current standings, prompting calls for immediate intervention. The ramifications of these disputes affect not only the teams involved but also leave club owners anxious about their future in the league.

Mamelodi Sundowns boss calls out unfair recognition
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso isn't holding back. Since his arrival in December, the Portuguese coach has transformed the Tshwane-based giants into an unstoppable force. Replacing Manqoba Mngqithi after a turbulent start, Cardoso has steered Masandawana to yet another historic milestone. Under his leadership, Sundowns clinched their eighth consecutive Premiership league title and secured a coveted spot in the CAF Champions League final, where they'll face Egyptian powerhouse Pyramids FC. But despite their dominance, Cardoso believes the club isn't getting the recognition it truly deserves. 'I know that Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have a lot of fans, but I also know that this club that I represent has done a wonderful job in representing South Africa,' Cardoso told MSW , as quoted by FARPost . While Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates dominate headlines due to their large fan bases and long-standing rivalries. Cardoso argues that Sundowns have become the true flag bearers of South African football on the continent. 'When a club wins in South Africa for so many times and years in a row, is representing the country in the way it does, better than anyone in the last ten years, that respect should be given to this group of players,' he said. Cardoso, though new to the local game, quickly noticed a glaring difference between Sundowns' accomplishments and the acknowledgement they received. 'And sometimes…I know I'm new here but already I can see, that's not how people see this.' Cardoso also praised his players' impact on the national team, reinforcing Sundowns' role in Bafana Bafana's recent resurgence. 'It makes me proud that Mamelodi Sundowns is the base of the national team of South Africa, it makes me proud to see how many players are selected,' he added. He believes the club's dominance should also reflect in local awards. 'I hope that the [PSL] awards of the season are given in general to Mamelodi Sundowns because indeed the trophies, performances, data and numbers are there.' Miguel Cardoso has sent a clear message, that Sundowns aren't just winning, they're redefining South African football. With silverware, stats, and continental credibility to back them up, the coach is demanding the respect he feels the team has more than earned. 40-year-old Onyango dismisses retirement talk
'I speak with confidence on the fact that I'm still at Sundowns for another season,' Onyango said. Denis Onyango of Mamelodi Sundowns challenged by Craig Martin of Chippa United during the Betway Premiership 2024/25 match at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria on the 07 May 2025 ©Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix Denis Onyango has no plans to retire just yet, despite adding a record 12th South African Premier League title to his illustrious career. The veteran Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, who has been part of the club's domestic dominance, has confirmed his intention to continue playing beyond the current season. ALSO READ: All the pressure is on SuperSport as Pirates come to town The club now sets its sights on the CAF Champions League final against Pyramids FC and next month's FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Although Onyango played second fiddle to first-choice goalkeeper Ronwen Williams this season, he still featured in 10 Betway Premiership matches, contributing to Sundowns' historic eighth consecutive league crown. 'To be honest, I'm still here and I think one more (season) and the body will talk to me. I speak with confidence on the fact that I'm still at Sundowns for another season,' Onyango responded when asked about his future. 'It's all about showing the young ones that it's possible regardless of your age. I'm probably on 2% left and exhausted the 98% but it's for the youngsters to know that you need to work hard and talent alone is not enough. The 40-year-old began his PSL journey with SuperSport United, where he won three league titles. He joined Sundowns in 2011, going on to lift a further nine championships with the Tshwane-based giants. His path to success has not been without challenges. After being loaned to Bidvest Wits during the 2013–14 campaign, Onyango returned to Sundowns stronger, playing a pivotal role in their 2016 CAF Champions League triumph. That same year, he was honoured by CAF as the African-based Player of the Year. 'The first one (title) was incredible because it was my second season in South Africa with our neighbours SuperSport United,' Onyango said while reflecting on his remarkable career. 'The other one that I won which I think was special was I came back from a loan at Bidvest Wits back to Sundowns. I always wanted to reward them for the faith they showed me. Winning that league title in 2016 ignited the fire in me but the group was good. ALSO READ: Chiefs coach Nabi – 'This news is bad for me' 'The 12th one is good because we had challenges. We lost the cup final, changed coaches but the target was to win the league, stay in the Champions League and make history because it's going to be very difficult to find another team that will win eight titles in a row.'
