Why some US lawmakers are asking Elon Musk's Tesla to delay robotaxi launch

Tesla's planned Robotaxi launch in Austin, Texas, may be delayed due to a request from Texas lawmakers, a report claims. A group of Texas lawmakers has reportedly sent a letter to Tesla urging the company to postpone the June 22 launch by a few months due to a new state law set to be implemented. The electric vehicle maker's CEO, Elon Musk, has been discussing a summer launch for the Austin service since last year. Last week, the tech billionaire also officially shared a June 22 launch date. Previously, Musk has described what Tesla plans to launch as "not really self-driving," but has presented this service as a milestone in autonomous driving after facing years of missed deadlines. Why Texas lawmakers want Tesla to delay robotaxi service launch In a letter (seen by KXAN), lawmakers stated that the Texas Legislature has passed an update to the state's 2017 framework for autonomous vehicle operations, with the new law set to take effect in September. The letter said: 'Under the new framework, commercial autonomous vehicle operators transporting passengers or property must receive prior authorisation from the Department of Motor Vehicles before operating on public streets without a human driver.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo As per the letter, to gain authorisation, autonomous vehicle operators in Texas must prove that each vehicle: Complies with state traffic laws Has a recording device installed Meets federal motor vehicle safety standards Can reach a minimal risk condition if the system fails Is properly registered, titled, and insured under state law Additionally, operators must submit a First Responder Interaction Plan to the Department of Public Safety detailing: How first responders should interact with the vehicle How to contact fleet support and safely remove or tow the vehicle Any public safety risks or hazardous conditions linked to the vehicle 'As members of the Austin delegation in the Texas Senate and Texas House of Representatives, we are formally requesting that Tesla delay autonomous robotaxi operations until the new law takes effect on September 1, 2025. We believe this is in the best interest of both public safety and building public trust in Tesla's operations,' the letter noted. The letter stated that if Tesla continues with its planned launch this month, the company is requested to respond with detailed information demonstrating that it will be 'compliant with the new law upon the launch of driverless operations in Austin.'
