EU Commission in charge of trade talks with US, Spain says after Trump tariff threat
MADRID: The European Commission is in charge of trade negotiations with the United States, Spain's economy minister said on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would double tariffs on Madrid over what he considers insufficient defence spending.
Trump said after a NATO summit in The Hague he would make Spain pay "twice as much" for a trade deal after the NATO member state's refusal to meet an alliance defence spending target of 5% of gross domestic product.
Speaking in Paris, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo also told Spanish state news agency EFE: "Europe also has tools to defend itself if no deal is reached."

Netanyahu asks court to postpone corruption trial summons: lawyer
JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked a court on Thursday to postpone his testimony in his long-running corruption trial, after US President Donald Trump called for the case to be cancelled altogether. In a filing to the tribunal, Netanyahu's lawyer Amit Hadad said the Israeli premier's testimony should be delayed in light of 'regional and global developments'. 'The court is respectfully requested to order the cancellation of the hearings in which the prime minister was scheduled to testify in the coming two weeks,' the filing said. It said Netanyahu was 'compelled to devote all his time and energy to managing national, diplomatic and security issues of the utmost importance' following a brief conflict with Iran and during ongoing fighting in Gaza where Israeli hostages are held. Trump on Wednesday described the case against Netanyahu as a 'witch hunt'. In a message on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the Netanyahu trial 'should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero', after the end of a 12-day war with Iran. Israel's opposition leader on Thursday warned Trump against interfering in Israel's internal affairs. 'We are thankful to President Trump, but... the president should not interfere in a judicial trial in an independent country,' Yair Lapid said in an interview with news website Ynet. Netanyahu is Israel's longest-serving prime minister. In the trial that has been delayed many times since it began in May 2020, Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing. In a first case, Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, are accused of accepting more than $260,000 worth of luxury goods such as cigars, jewellery and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favours. In two other cases, Netanyahu is accused of attempting to negotiate more favourable coverage in two Israeli media outlets.

Valencia CF secures $377 million financing for Nou Mestalla stadium
FILE PHOTO: View of the partially built soccer stadium Nou Mestalla, started in 2007 to replace the current stadium, the Mestalla, in Valencia, Spain, November 17, 2024. REUTERS/Vincent West/File Photo SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Valencia CF has secured financing totaling 322 million euros ($377 million) for the development of the Nou Mestalla stadium, the Spanish football club said on Thursday. The financing, comprising 237 million euros of notes and 85 million euros of a short-term loan, is one of the biggest transactions ever completed by a professional football club in Spain and across Europe, Valencia said in a statement. "Securing this landmark financing gives us the green light to deliver Nou Mestalla - a world-class stadium that will power the club's growth for generations," Kiat Lim, Valencia CF President, said in the statement. Lim is the son of Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, who is the club's majority owner. The stadium, which is located in the city of Valencia and will have over 70,000 seats, is scheduled to open in 2027. It is expected to multiply the revenue currently generated at its old Mestalla facility, Valencia CF said. "Given the expanded hospitality, greater capacity, and multi-purpose event hosting, early estimates suggest that we will be more than tripling the current revenue," Kiat Lim said. Valencia CF was advised by Bibium Capital, Addleshaw Goddard, Beka Titulizacion and Goldman Sachs, with Spain's La Liga providing support to the club in the process, according to the statement.
