‘Been difficult': Smith reveals confidence crisis

Perth Now31-07-2025
Former world No.2 Cameron Smith has admitted he's lost a 'bit of confidence' in his golf game after missing five-straight major cuts but is adamant he's putting in the work to fix things as he eyes off back-to-back LIV team championship wins.
After missing the weekend at the British Open, Smith became the only player in 2025 to miss all four major cuts.
He wasn't alone in struggling at Royal Portrush, however, with only one of the nine Australians in the field, Smith's LIV teammate Marc Leishman, getting through.
But the result was the continuation of a battling run in 2025 for the 2022 British Open winner who is 16th on the individual LIV standings with a best result of a tie for fifth from 12 events.
Other than the majors, Smith hasn't ventured outside LIV to play this year and his world ranking has slipped to 212, the lowest it's been since 2014.
It's a far cry form 2024 when Smith enjoyed three team wins with LIV, including the season-ending team championship.
As it was confirmed this year's LIV season-ender would be played in Michigan, with some changes to the format, Smith revealed his loss of confidence and what he was doing to work his way back.
'You're constantly trying to figure stuff out, whether you're playing great or whether you're playing bad. Golf is a funny game like that,' he said.
'It's been difficult, I can't quite really put my finger on it. I feel like my technical stuff, particularly with my swing, is as good as it's ever been, and I'm not getting the results from it. It's been difficult in the sense that it feels really good, but I can't go out there and play my best golf.
'Working through it mentally, I feel like I've lost a little bit of confidence in my game. But I'm slowly getting that back, and that's through hard work and hitting the right shots on the golf course.
'It's just a matter of time, I feel like. I don't think it's a technical issue or anything like that. It's just a little bit of a setback, and we'll be right back up there before we know it.'
Smith said a short game focus in the wake of his early Open exit could help him fix things.
'Probably more so than anything else is the chipping and putting. I feel like you can learn a lot about your full swing in those little pitch shots,' he said.
'I spend a lot of time around the green, a lot of time putting, and then go out there and play the golf course.'
Smith is likely to join Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott at this year's Australian Open at Royal Melbourne but is yet to confirm his full end-of -year schedule.
Last year, Smith played six events in Australia, finishing runner-up at the Australian PGA but 48th at the Open after criticising the set-up of Kingston Heath in what was the final year of the dual-gender format.

LIV Golf alters format for season-ending championship

LIV Golf has tweaked the format of their season-ending team championship by eliminating first-round byes and introducing a play-in match. The 13-team league will stage a play-in match on Wednesday of the LIV Golf Team Championship at Saint John's Resort in Plymouth, Michigan, between the teams who sit 12th and 13th in the standings at the conclusion of the regular winner will advance to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, there is no first-round bye for the top seeds as in prior years. "I think you'll see a few teams get knocked out that you maybe wouldn't expect," said Australia's Cameron Smith in a LIV Golf news release. Smith captains the defending team champions, Ripper GC. "More pressure. Each day matters more," Crushers captain Bryson DeChambeau added. The play-in will be held on August 20, then the remaining 12 teams head to the course on August 22 for the quarter-finals. For the semi-finals on August 23, six teams will be in the championship bracket and the three winners will move on to the stroke-play finals on August 24. In other changes to the format, all 48 players from those teams will compete and the captains of the higher-seeded teams will be given the advantage of seeing his opponent's lineup before finalising the matchups. Legion XIII, captained by Spaniard Jon Rahm, currently lead the team standings ahead of DeChambeau's Crushers in second and Spaniard Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC in third. The current bottom two teams are Majesticks GC, captained by Sweden's Henrik Stenson, and Kevin Na's Iron Heads GC.

Bhatia leds FedEx Cup first playoff as Aussies falter

Akshay Bhatia had a blazing finish to get his PGA Tour post-season off to a lightning start, closing eagle-birdie-birdie for an eight-under 62 to take a one-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood at the FedEx St Jude Championship. Scottie Scheffler, playing for the first time since winning the British Open for his second major of the year, made bogey on the final hole for a 67, his 10th straight round in the 60s. Bhatia entered the FedEx Cup playoffs in 45th, with only the top 50 advancing to the second of three tournaments in the lucrative post-season. The idea is to be among the top 30 who reach East Lake for a shot at the $10 million ($A15 million) bonus. The American was paired with Englishman Harry Hall, who is at No.44. Hall was matching Bhatia until the final two holes, when Bhatia rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th and fired a short iron into two feet on 18. Bhatia, who had his career-best round, said he had been spending too much time thinking about numbers, whether it's his score or his world ranking or his position in the FedEx Cup. The goal is to keep his mind peaceful. "I felt pretty relaxed, and I'm just not trying to force anything," he said. "It's OK to get mad at golf shots but not at yourself." Justin Rose and Bud Cauley also carded 64s on a TPC Southwind that has 18 new greens and a course with much thicker rough. Fleetwood is all but set for the FedEx Cup finale at No.9, though he would love to get that first PGA Tour title to go along with European tour wins against strong fields. He hit 13 out of 14 fairways, and the one he missed led to a birdie when he holed a bunker shot on No.9. "People talk about this golf course as a second-shot golf course, but it's only a second-shot golf course if you're in the fairway," Fleetwood said. "I hit the ball so well off the tee that I was always giving myself an opportunity." And then it helped to see the putts drop, four straight birdies to close out his round. Projections can fluctuate with shots from anyone on any part of the course. Rickie Fowler came in at No.64 and shot 66, which projects him inside the top 50. Jordan Spieth was at No.48. He had to rally on the back nine for a 69 that put him out of the top 50, and then back to No.50 by the end of the day. This is one of the more important weeks of the PGA Tour because of what's at stake. Not only do the top 50 advance to the BMW Championship, they are assured of being in all the $20m ($A30.6m) Signature events for next year. Needing a top-14 finish to progress, Cam Davis is the leading Australian in a tie for 27th after opening with a one-under 69. That elevated Davis from 69th to 64th in the live standings. Jason Day blew a fine start to his round, going four over on the back nine after negotiating the front nine in three under to slump to a 71. The former world No.1 is still likely to advance to the BMW Championship. But Min Woo Lee has ground to make up following an equal-worst-in-the-field first-round 76 that pushed him outside the top 50 in the live FedEx Cup standings. With AAP
