Brewers' Pat Murphy make tough admission after roster shakeup
The Milwaukee Brewers made a bold move ahead of the MLB trade deadline, acquiring catcher Danny Jansen from the Tampa Bay Rays while designating Eric Haase for assignment. In a candid moment after the announcement, manager Pat Murphy didn't hold back about the difficulty of the roster decision.
Murphy's words came in response to a question about Haase, who had become a dependable clubhouse presence despite limited playing time. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Todd Rosiak took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share the emotional quote following the move.
'Brewers confirm acquisition of C Danny Jansen from the Rays.To clear room, Eric Haase is DFDd.Pat Murphy made it clear that doing so was tremendously painful, but that he trusts the front office to improve the team in any area it can.'
Jansen arrives in Milwaukee at a critical juncture, with the Brewers clinging to a slim lead in a tightly contested NL Central race over the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs. His addition strengthens the catching corps behind William Contreras, who has played through persistent hand issues this season. With 11 home runs in 2025 and years of veteran experience, Jansen offers immediate offensive upside and much-needed depth for a club eyeing a deep postseason run.
While Jansen brings power and familiarity—having grown up in Appleton, Wisconsin—the decision to designate Haase for assignment still stung. The backup catcher was hitting .256 with 4 homers in 28 games and had delivered in clutch moments. Fans flooded social media expressing their disappointment, many hoping Haase clears waivers and lands back in Triple-A Nashville.
From a tactical vantage, the Brewers needed an insurance plan. With Contreras catching more innings than pretty much anyone else in baseball and top prospect Jeferson Quero sidelined, the front office had little choice. The former Rays catcher's platoon advantage against left-handers and his playoff experience were likely key factors in the decision.
Haase's removal also underscores the ruthless nature of MLB trade deadline season. Murphy's statement—acknowledging the pain while backing the front office—captured that duality, a manager balancing team chemistry with postseason ambition. Jansen, for his part, adds a hometown storyline as he now suits up at American Family Field just miles from where he grew up.
This move signals Milwaukee's commitment to pushing deep into October. With just days before the deadline, more changes could be coming, possibly to the bullpen or outfield. But no matter what follows, the designation stands as a reminder of the sacrifices often required in pursuit of a championship.

Yankees to acquire All-Star closer David Bednar from Pirates before MLB deadline: reports
The New York Yankees have added the bullpen help they've needed before the MLB trade deadline. New York agreed to a deal to acquire right-handed closer David Bednar in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to multiple reports. The deal is pending a medical review. The Yankees are sending a package with Rafael Flores, the team's eighth-best prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, leading the way alongside 19-year-old prospect Edgleen Perez and outfielder Brian Sanchez, according to The New York Post. Bednar, the 30-year-old two-time All-Star, has a 2.37 ERA over 38 innings with 17 saves for the Pirates this season. It was just two years ago he led the National League with 39 saves in his second straight All-Star campaign in Pittsburgh. But Bednar struggled in 2024, owning a 5.77 ERA over 57.2 innings, though he still had 23 saves. Bednar is a much-needed arm for New York, as their bullpen has been struggling of late. Luke Weaver and Devin Williams, their back-end battery who had been consistent in past seasons, have both had a rollercoaster year. With both Weaver and Williams hitting free agency after the year, Bednar's addition is a crucial one. He still has one more year of team control, meaning he will be with the team throughout the 2026 season before free agency in 2027. Relievers are always a hot commodity for playoff pushes before the deadline, and there has been a flurry of deals and big names that have been traded in the last few days. The San Diego Padres made a big splash, acquiring Athletics closer Mason Miller and left-handed pitcher J.P. Sears, a former Yankee, in a deal that sent Leo De Vries, the third-best prospect in baseball, to Sacramento. Across the Bronx and into Queens, the New York Mets bolstered their bullpen with Gregory Soto, Tyler Rogers and Ryan Helsley, the St. Louis Cardinals' stud closer for their own playoff push. There are still a few hours left for teams to continue swapping players before the MLB trade deadline at 6 p.m. ET passes. The Yankees, who still have their top prospects in hand, may not be done making moves.

Why Cam Johnson is a great fit for Nikola Jokic, Nuggets
Yahoo Sports senior NBA analyst Kevin O'Connor is joined by Adam Mares to discuss Denver's additions this offseason and why Cam Johnson is a better fit for the team than Michael Porter Jr. Hear the full conversation on 'The Kevin O'Connor Show' and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Adam, I am curious about your overall thoughts. I'm sure you've talked about them a lot with the Denver Nuggets. I feel like they have been one of the winners of this entire offseason so far. Valentunis, De'Anthony Melton back on the floor, get Bruce Brown back, among many other additions. What's your overall assessment of how Chris and this remade Nuggets front office has done so far? Well, first of all, I think there are so many fascinating layers to the Nuggets because they get a rookie head coach, rookie front office, at every position. My expectations were low. They didn't have a lot of assets. So my first impression is I was surprised. I'm shocked that they were able to do so much and not just do so much. I made a lot of moves I really believe in that I think are exciting. They have depth. They brought in shooting. I mean, they were missing depth last year. They didn't have any shooters outside of Michael Porter and Jamal Murray. They've added a bunch. And then they have this very unique situation with Vlatunis Valentina, a true backup center that we haven't really seen in the cache area. So the Nuggets to me did a lot of interesting things and answered a lot of the questions that I just thought were unanswerable going into the offseason. And I think, mate, the big move of all of them was trading Michael Porter Jr. In a 2032 first for Cam Johnson. And to me, on paper, as good as Michael Porter Jr. Was in his time in Denver, Cam Johnson is just better at some of the things that are gonna make him even a better fit next to Jokic because MPJ was a flamethrower shooter and he was like a, you know, helpful rim protector, a helpful rebounder, but Cam Johnson is an elite shooter off the catch, a developed shooter off the dribble as well, a guy who can attack a closeout, do some work in the mid-range area, can make the right pass, and is still a very good defender in his zone right as well. Do you view Cam Johnson as worth sacrificing that 22, 2032 first round pick for the Nuggets? To me, no question. There's absolutely worth it because I think Cam Johnson is meaningfully better at the things that are going to really matter about the fit for Denver, namely the ability to read the floor, the ability to guard and keep your guy in front of you. Not that Cam Johnson is a shutdown defender, but I think he's going to do a good job of executing the scheme and keeping the guys in front of him. So yes, I think it was worth it. I mean, look, Leoga is over. I've seen 60 years of Denver Nuggets basketball where it hasn't been pretty. I think Nuggets fans are prepared for whatever's coming their way in 2032 and beyond. It's gonna be ugly, but you use that asset to bolster your opportunity right now, and I just think Cam Johnson, this is, it's rare we get, uh, uh, a situation like this where we're going to be able to compare two players, very, very similar in different situations, swapping with each other because you always wonder how much you get a bump playing with Jokic. Michael Porter wants to expand his game. How much does he, how efficient can he be? Those questions will be answered this year, and it's kind of exciting. Close
