Tapah inmates' gold embroidery shines at Perak PMR 2025
The Malaysian Prisons Department, in its efforts to promote traditional Perak handicrafts, showcased a variety of products featuring this delicate art of embroidery, including pillowcases, handbags, wallets and keychains, at the Perak PMR 2025, which runs from yesterday until tomorrow.
A prison officer there, Siti Faiazah (rpt Faiazah) Ibrahim, said the prison is showcasing the products to promote the embroidery art originating from Kuala Kangsar, while introducing the beauty of Perak's cultural heritage to a wider audience.
'The embroidery made by the female inmates of Tapah Prison mostly uses traditional motifs such as hibiscus and chrysanthemum, but we also have modern motifs, such as heart shapes and letters, to attract the interest of the younger generation,' she told Bernama, here today.
According to her, Tapah Prison is also the only prison that offers embroidery as a specialised rehabilitation skill for both female and male inmates.
Siti Faiazah said the gold thread embroidery products on display received an overwhelmingly positive response, with most of the items selling out.
Yesterday, products featuring gold thread embroidery, such as small handbags and wallets, were almost sold out. We have limited sales, of up to 10 to 15 pieces a day for the three-day event,' she said.
Apart from the gold thread product exhibition, she said the Malaysian Prisons Department was also promoting various products such as pastries and ceramic handicrafts, produced by inmates at the Batu Gajah Prison and Taiping Prison, respectively.
Themed 'Pendidikan Tinggi, Pemacu Negara MADANI', the Perak PMR 2025 featured more than 200 live services, including knowledge sharing sessions, exhibitions, health screenings, advisory services and various activities for all levels of society.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Close cooperation between the Federal Territories, Singapore, and Indonesia is expected to bring significant benefits to all three parties in realising the ASEAN Vision 2045. Regarding her meeting with Bima Arya, Dr Zaliha said they spoke about bold ideas for the region's future, including the vision of ASEAN 2045 with easier travel across borders, smarter waste and logistics systems, and stronger digital connections between cities. 'I also shared the Federal Territories' role as a pioneer of the CHASE City concept under Malaysia MADANI and extended an invitation for Jakarta to join this journey,' she said. Additionally, she said the discussion touched on opportunities for cooperation in the digital economy, such as a cashless society, as well as empowering youth and women through flexible work infrastructure, including cloud kitchen initiatives currently being implemented in the Federal Territories. Dr Zaliha also invited Indonesia to join the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 celebration to strengthen ties between the people of both countries and reinforce the network of ASEAN cities towards an inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous shared future.

Senator: Sarawak's O&G rights protected by state laws, not overridden by PDA 1974
Ahmad says the PDA 1974 is 'not a shield of immunity' that overrides existing Sarawak laws such as the OMO 1958 which have been in place before the formation of Malaysia. – Bernama photo KUCHING (Aug 13): Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim's remarks on Sarawak's oil and gas jurisdiction are one-sided and ignore the governing laws that have been in force since the formation of Malaysia, said Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim. Ahmad said the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 is 'not a shield of immunity' that overrides existing Sarawak laws such as the Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO) 1958 which have been in place before the formation of Malaysia. 'Firstly, Sarawak has been producing oil and gas since the discovery of oil in Miri in 1910—53 years before Malaysia was formed. This industry developed under Sarawak's own laws long before the PDA existed. 'Secondly, the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the Malaysia Act 1963 preserve state laws. Section 73 of the Malaysia Act 1963 preserves all state laws in force before Malaysia, including the OMO 1958 which remain valid today,' he said in a statement today. In chiding Hassan for saying that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was wrong to grant Sarawak additional power over the state's oil and gas sector, Ahmad said all MPs need to understand both legal and historical facts before making their remarks public, adding that ignorance of the law is not an excuse. He said the OMO 1958, which was amended in 2018, grants Sarawak full authority over petroleum licensing onshore and on its continental shelf. 'The PDA 1974 applies fully in states that do not have their own petroleum laws like OMO 1958. In those states, Petronas is the sole aggregator of oil and gas. 'In Sarawak, the PDA cannot override the OMO, the Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016, the Sarawak Land Code, or the State Sales Tax (SST),' said Ahmad. He said under the DGO 2016, Sarawak has exclusive authority to license and regulate domestic gas distribution, with state-owned Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) formally recognised by the federal government as the sole gas aggregator for Sarawak's domestic market, excluding liquefied natural gas (LNG). 'Why exclude LNG? LNG is an international export commodity regulated under PDA 1974 due to long-term sales contracts between Petronas and overseas buyers like Japan, Korea and China. 'The 2020 Commercial Settlement Agreement between Sarawak and Petronas retained LNG under Petronas' management to maintain market stability and avoid breaching export contracts, while granting Sarawak full control over the domestic gas market,' he added. He also pointed out that on March 13, 2020, the High Court upheld Sarawak's right to impose SST on petroleum products, with Petronas withdrawing its appeal and settling the dues. 'To the MP for Pasir Gudang, before politicising on hearsay, acquaint yourself with these legal facts. Sarawak's constitutional, historical, and legal position is not subject to political convenience,' said Ahmad. In a recent parliamentary reply to Hassan, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the PDA 1974 would remain in force in accordance with existing legal provisions. She said Petronas had signed two key agreements to strengthen cooperation, namely a Commercial Collaboration Agreement with Sabah, and a Commercial Settlement Agreement with Sarawak. Johor leads data centre investment, 42 projects worth RM164.45b approved as of 2Q
JOHOR BAHRU — Johor has emerged as the nation's leading data centre investment hub with 42 projects worth RM164.45 billion approved as of the second quarter (2Q) this year. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said these projects are expected to create over 6,000 quality job opportunities and contribute 78.6 per cent of the country's operational IT capacity. He also stated that Johor is targeting to house six per cent of Malaysia's data centre capacity by the year 2030. 'In line with this development, the state government aspires to position Johor as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) and the nation's digital economy. This will be achieved through the integration of smart technologies in public services, enhancing the competitiveness of industries, and building an inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystem so that the benefits of technology can be enjoyed by all levels of society,' he said in a Facebook post. He added that the combination of large-scale data centre infrastructure, advances in AI technology, and progressive government policies will further position Johor as a potential regional digital innovation hub.
