PM Modi helm ushers unprecedented growth, says Punjab BJP chief
Chandigarh: The 11-year governance of the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the country. India has become the fourth-largest economy in the world, Punjab unit party President Sunil Jakhar said on Tuesday.
Lauding the phenomenal growth rate of the country, he told the media here that 'our nation has crossed even Japan in term of growth'.
'This is no coincidence but absolute commitment to work on policies, principles and prioritise to ensure that decisions which usher in change for the country were taken in the past 11 years.'
While recalling various achievements of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) rule, Jakhar said it was a great achievement that 81 crore people were being given free rations, 55 crore had been given health insurance advantages, four crore houses for the disadvantaged were built, 50 crore households were provided drinking water facilities and crores of toilet's have been built across the nation. Jakhar reasoned that India's 6.5 GDP has led to industrial growth which has translated into employment for the people.
'The infrastructure of the nation, be it the extensive construction of highways or bridges, has changed the entire landscape of the country, ushering in progress and prosperity. A voluminous 55,000 km of highways and expressways is a phenomenal achievement.'
Hailing the vision of Prime Minister Modi, the Punjab BJP chief said in 2014 there were only eight AIIMS in the country.
'Today we have 24, three times more in 11 years. In Punjab, we have an AIIMS Bathinda, which is a huge medical facility and soon more hospitals of this level will be established in other towns in the state.'
Jakhar emphasised that women rights and equality were a keen concern of the BJP and the women reservation Bill to be passed.
'The social fabric of the country has become more progressive with equality and distribution of wealth and opportunity for all is a reality. The ease-of-living and ease-of-doing business has improved the lives of millions. The substantial increase in MSP (minimum support price) has led to increased income in Punjab as we are primarily an agricultural economy. The food grain purchase in the state this year was Rs 68,771 crore till date, while in 2014 it was Rs 32,211 crore,' he explained.
Answering a media query about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that 11 years have not seen any progress, Jakhar said: 'The 6.5 growth rate, the fourth-largest economy in the world, the development in the infrastructure, women empowerment, passing of significant Bills are all to see but unfortunately, if someone wants to have a myopic view then it is lamentable.'

1 2 Ahmedabad: A consumer commission has ordered a motorcycle service centre to pay compensation of Rs 50,000 to a customer for charging Rs 35 more than the maximum retail price printed on an engine oil packet. According to the case details, one Nikunj Parmar visited the Suzuki motorcycle service centre — Arke Suzuki Service — at Nava Vadaj on May 20, 2024, to purchase a packet of engine oil. While the packet bore a maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs 455, the service centre charged him Rs 490. He objected to being charged Rs 35 extra and later filed his complaint with the national consumer helpline portal, but no action was taken against the centre. Parmar then sued the service centre, Turquoise Autobots LLP and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd, at the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Ahmedabad (city). The service centre did not respond to the commission's notice within time, and the auto company argued that it should not be held liable since no specific relief was not sought against it. The complainant submitted that the motorcycle company recommended the company-made engine oil to enhance the vehicle's performance. When he objected to being charged more than the MRP, he faced verbal abuse as well. The commission said that the manufacturer's liability is limited in this case according to Section 84 of the Consumer Protection Act. It said the complainant should establish that the overcharging was done at the behest of Suzuki, but there was no such evidence. The commission stated that charging more than the MRP illegally can be called an unfair trade practice. "Moreover, the staff misbehaved with the customer, did not use proper language and snatched the oil pack from him. They finally succeeded in extracting Rs 35 more from the customer…This requires an exemplary punishing order," the commission stated and clarified that Suzuki, the company, was not liable. The commission ordered Arke Suzuki Service and Turquoise Autobots LLP to refund Rs 35 to Parmar with 8% interest and to pay him a compensation of Rs 50,000 for causing mental and physical harassment. It has also ordered an additional payment of Rs 5,000 to the customer towards legal expenses.

Govt positive about Nashik airport expansion: Mohol
Nashik: Union minister of state for civic aviation Murlidhar Mohol on Wednesday said govt was positive about the expansion of the Nashik airport terminal in view of the Kumbh Mela . Mohol said the new airport terminal was built at Prayagraj in just 15 months ahead of the Kumbh Mela there. "Now, we are positive about the expansion of the existing Nashik airport terminal building and also improving its air connectivity," he said. The Nashik airport, managed by defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), is located around 20km from Nashik city. Mohol said he discussed the airport expansion with CM Devendra Fadnavis, who requested him to visit the facility and review the scope for expansion. The Union minister also held a meeting with HAL and Nashik airport officials, directing HAL to send an expansion proposal to CM Fadnavis and him. A delegation of Nashik Industries & Manufacturers' Association (NIMA) also met Mohol and discussed issues related to the airport expansion and approval for the immigration check-post at the terminal. NIMA president Ashish Nahar stated Mohol assured them of expanding the airport terminal and enhancing the air connectivity from the airport. Manish Rawal, chairman of the aviation committee of NIMA, said considering the rise in the number of flights and passengers during the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, there was a need to increase the capacity of the existing airport terminal. At present, a private airline is operating flights from Nashik airport to six destinations — Delhi, Goa, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Nagpur. The airline is also planning to start flights to Kolkata. State govt and HAL jointly developed the Nashik airport terminal around 12 years back at Rs 94 crore. In 2015, state govt leased the airport terminal at Rs 1,000 per month for 30 years till 2045. The seating capacity of the present terminal building is around 300 passengers. The average passengers footfall at the airport throughout the day is around 1,500.

SC/ST commission flags ‘two-glass' system in Telangana villages
Hyderabad: The chairman of the SC/ST commission, Bakki Venkataiah, expressed concern over the discriminatory practices being followed in some villages and urged the officials concerned to crack the whip against those indulging in such practices. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Referring to a 'two-glass' system, where separate cups or tumblers are used for different castes, Bakki Venkataiah claimed it is still being practised in some villages. "It is a matter of concern that the 'two-glass' system is being practised in some areas. This must be eradicated," he said. However, Venkataiah did not specify the places and districts where such incidents were reported. The commission visited Jogulamba Gadwal district and Nagarkurnool, held meetings with officials, and called for strong action against caste-based discrimination. At a meeting with officials in Jogulamba Gadwal on Tuesday, he instructed the police and revenue authorities to lay their focus on Rayapuram village, where instances of caste-based discrimination had been reported. Officials told TOI that some years ago, a community had complained about people from a particular caste refusing to offer haircuts in salons and restricting their entry. "We have not received any complaints regarding the 'two-glass' system, but if such practices are found, we will take strict against those responsible," a senior official said. The 'two-glass' system is typically observed at tea stalls or similar places, where certain communities are made to drink from separate glasses, which are kept apart from others. Meanwhile, Jogulamba Gadwal Collector BM Santhosh informed the commission that the administration is taking strict action in cases registered against the SC/ST Act. Since Sept 2023, 62 complaints have been registered, of which 19 cases are still under investigation, while chargesheets have been filed in the remaining cases. In one case, an accused has been convicted. The govt has provided Rs 38.75 lakh as compensation to victims in 32 cases, he informed the commission.
