Sabah's timber revenue RM171 million last year

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah retained 63 per cent of its landmass as forested areas, with 27 per cent designated as Totally Protected Areas, according to Chief Conservator of Forests Datuk Frederick Kugan. The department also reported a revenue increase of RM16 million from timber royalties, totalling RM171 million in 2024. This is stated in the Forestry Department's 2024 annual report presented at State's Forestry Appreciation Ceremony on Friday. The 288-page report was presented State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. 'Through teamwork and stakeholder partnerships, we are committed to sustainable forest management for Sabah's future,' said Frederick, expressing confidence in SFD's continued success. Notable events during the year included hosting the 20th Malaysian Forestry Conference, where the Sabah Mangrove Action Plan was launched and participating in international forums like the Asean Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security Forum and the Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Forest Landscape Restoration. Under the Greening Malaysia Campaign, Sabah planted 23 million trees, reinforcing its commitment to reforestation. The department also introduced carbon as a forest produce under the Forest Enactment 1968, aligning with global climate goals. To enhance transparency and market access, the Sabah Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS) is being revised to meet European Union regulations. Additionally, the Sabah Jurisdictional Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (JCSPO) Initiative was launched to support smallholders through cost-effective group certification. The department also implemented digital tools like the Aplikasi Kutipan Cukai for timber royalty assessment and the E-Ladang Hutan (Geoforest System) to improve forest management. Forest protection efforts included training Honorary Forest Rangers and conducting Ops Khazanah operations. The SFD was also appointed to the National Anti-Financial Crime Council (NFCC) to ensure integrity in its operations. Ukrainian drones force suspension of Russian electronics factory
MOSCOW: Work at an electronics factory in Russia's Chuvashia region, some 600 kilometres east of Moscow, was briefly suspended on Monday after a Ukrainian drone attack, local officials said. Moscow said falling debris from intercepted drones fell on the facility, while Ukraine claimed a direct hit on the site. 'This morning, Ukrainian attempts to use drones in Chuvashia were detected,' regional governor Oleg Nikolayev wrote on Telegram. 'Two drones fell on the territory of the VNIIR factory,' said Nikolayev, adding that there were no casualties. The site is one of the main factories producing electronic components in Russia. Ukraine's General Staff said in a statement that it had targeted 'a military-industrial complex facility, where antennas for Shahed (drones) were manufactured'. Russia fires dozens of Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones at Ukrainian cities on a daily basis. Ukraine regularly launches retaliatory drone strikes in response to Moscow's aerial bombardments, which began with its full-scale offensive into Ukrainian territory more than three years ago. 'Strikes on the facilities that support the armed aggression of the Russian Federation will continue until it is completely stopped,' Ukraine's General Staff added. Governor Nikolayev said that the decision had been taken to 'temporarily suspend production to ensure the safety of employees'. Russia's defence ministry said it intercepted 49 Ukrainian drones overnight. Ukraine said it shot down 'dozens' of Russian drones over its western Rivne region. The massive Russian attack saw Ukraine's western neighbour Poland scramble fighter jets to secure its airspace, Warsaw's Operational Command said in a statement on social media.

PBDS calls for end to political interference in tuai rumah appointments
Dr John Brian Anthony KUCHING (June 9): Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) has called for an end to political interference in the appointment of tuai rumah (longhouse chief). The party's permanent chairman Dr John Brian Anthony claimed that political interference in the appointment of community leaders has long occurred in the Dayak community. He explained that such practice not only 'contaminates' the customs and traditional social structure of the Dayak community but also erodes their trust in grassroots leadership institution. 'These are also often used as a political tool to ensure support for certain parties, thus weakening the autonomy of the community. 'PBDS emphasises that the appointment of tuai rumah should be based on the acceptance and trust of the community they represent, not based on the influence or interference of any political party. 'This appointment process needs to return to the foundations of custom, community values, and genuine leadership spirit,' he said in a press statement. His statement was issued in support of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who on Sunday warned a certain political party leader against meddling in the selection of committee members for the Sibu Chinese Community Leaders Association. John Brian noted that Tiong's criticism shows how political interference has affected communities in Sarawak. Therefore, he urged the Sarawak government and relevant authorities to cease all forms of political interference in the appointment of community leaders, including tuai rumah. He added that this should be achieved by formulating transparent and fair guidelines for grassroots leadership appointments, with active community involvement. He stressed that the government must restore the Dayak community's autonomous power to nominate credible tuai rumah candidates who are accepted by the majority. 'PBDS will continue to fight for the rights and dignity of the Dayak community so that their social structure and customs are not further compromised for short-term political interests. 'Grassroots leadership is not a political tool — it is the voice of the community,' he said.

Hadi stepping down would cause only minor disruption in PAS, says analyst

PETALING JAYA: PAS may experience only a brief period of instability if its president Abdul Hadi Awang were to step down, a political analyst says in response to growing speculation over the party's top leadership. Syaza Shukri said that any successor to Hadi might need some time to gain the full support of members, given the Marang MP's strong charisma and leadership of PAS since 2003, following the death of Fadzil Noor. Advertisement 'I believe that if Hadi is replaced by a trusted figure within the party such as Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man or Takiyuddin Hassan, there won't be major issues, and the party's stability can likely be maintained, especially with the backing of its Dewan Ulama and Syura Council. 'The new leader would need time to build confidence among members and establish legitimacy,' the International Islamic University Malaysia academic told FMT. Last week, Sinar Harian reported that Hadi had hinted at stepping down due to health reasons. It is understood that he expressed this intention to senior party leaders at a recent retreat in Terengganu. The development fuelled speculation on the positions of the PAS president and deputy president ahead of the party's internal election, expected in September. Advertisement Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik claimed there had been calls for Hadi to relinquish the top post, although this was denied by state-level leaders. Johor PAS Youth chief Ahmad Nawfal Mahfodz alleged that such efforts stemmed from external parties who were unhappy with PAS's performance under Hadi's leadership. However, Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the pressure was coming from within the party as well, as some factions wanted to see PAS emerge as a stronger entity. He also acknowledged the presence of 'quiet movements' signalling the possible need for a change in leadership. 'That's why the ulama faction insists that the party's top two positions must continue to be held by religious scholars. 'But the pressure from the professionals seems more pronounced right now, because there's a sense that PAS needs reform,' he said. Azmi added that while PAS members were known for their loyalty to the party's leadership, many believed that change was necessary, albeit voluntary change and not through force. 'That's why there's a quiet, indirect movement to signal to Hadi that change is needed.
