Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Wanita MCA Chief Datuk Dr Pamela Yong appealed for responsible social media use, highlighting the grave risks posed to innocent children by online speculation and unverified information. She voiced deep concerns that the pursuit of justice for Zara Qairina could inadvertently endanger other children or be exploited for political purposes. 'As a mother, I find the circumstances surrounding Zara Qairina's death deeply troubling. While a thorough and transparent investigation is essential, we must ensure that the fervour for justice does not compromise the safety and emotional well-being of other children,' she said. She emphasised the particular vulnerability of Zara Qairina's friends and fellow students at SMA Tun Datu Mustafa, who are struggling to cope with grief and confusion. Pamela cautioned against the irresponsible use of social media which, she noted, can transform from a tool for awareness into a source of immense harm. 'It is crucial to resist the temptation to spread rumours or take matters into our own hands. Unverified information can inflict significant emotional damage on innocent children, making them collateral damage in our collective anger,' she warned. Pamela urged the public to allow the police and relevant authorities to conduct their investigation without interference from social media conjecture. She stressed that while achieving justice for Zara Qairina is imperative, it should not come at the expense of further traumatising the young lives affected by this tragedy. 'Our compassion must extend to all the young individuals touched by this heartbreaking event. Housewife loses RM129,420 in Telegram job scam
JERANTUT: A housewife in Jerantut lost RM129,420 after falling victim to a job scam promoted via the Telegram messaging app, which falsely used the name of a legitimate company. Jerantut deputy district police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Azahari Mukhtar said the victim received the offer on Aug 8. The job was supposedly to evaluate products and write reviews in return for commissions. He said the woman then communicated with an individual posing as an agent, who instructed her to make several payments under various pretexts, including task fees, company collaboration charges, and technical service fees. "Starting from Aug 13, the victim made multiple bank transfers to several local accounts. The total losses amounted to RM129,420. "On Aug 14, she was asked to make another payment but became suspicious," he said in a statement today. The victim later lodged a police report at the Jerantut Police Station. "It is understood that the money came from her savings and her husband's business earnings. "The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he added. Police have urged the public to be cautious of online job offers promising high returns and to verify account numbers using the official portal before making any transactions.

Elderly man dies after fall in Tamparuli ravine

The victim was believed to have slipped and fallen into a 150-metre ravine before he was found unconscious. Tuaran Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohammad Nor Amit said his team received an emergency call regarding the incident at 8.14pm. He said 10 personnel were deployed to the scene with one fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle. China national fined RM25,000 for harbouring illegals

Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old China national was fined a total of RM25,000 by the Sessions Court here for harbouring five illegal immigrants at premises under his control. Li Hao pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain, who imposed a RM5,000 fine for each illegal immigrant involved. In default of payment, Li will face six months' imprisonment per charge. Li was found to have allowed five Filipino nationals — two women and three men, aged between 18 and 48 — who lacked valid travel documents, to remain at the Liubaba Lease premises in Taman Emas, Jalan Penampang, around 9.10pm on July 10 this year. The offence falls under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and is punishable under Section 55E(2) of the same Act. The law provides for a fine between RM5,000 and RM30,000, or imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both, for each illegal immigrant found on the premises. In mitigation, Li appealed for leniency. However, Prosecuting Officer Mohd Sharifuddin Salim urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent. In a separate case in the same court, four Filipino nationals were jailed four months each after pleading guilty to entering the State without valid travel documents. Nanette Sapnay Pili, Cherry Mae Sampung Bernardino, Junaida Omar, and Kc Marwuez Sanchez were arrested during an Immigration enforcement operation at an entertainment outlet in Tanjung Aru at 1.20am on Aug 3. The four failed to produce valid identification documents during the operation. The court ordered their sentences to run from the date of their arrest.
