
Potential presence of primitive lunar mantle material at landing site: Study
The Shiv Shakti point is located at the southern high-latitude highlands of the nearside of the Moon. Scientists from Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) used data gathered by Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer onboard the Pragyan rover. They compared metal remnants and elemental concentrations of sulfur, potassium, sodium among others at the Shiv Shakti point where Chandra-yaan 3 landed on August 23, 2023. Sulfur, potassium and sodium can give insights into the mantle composition and chemistry.
'There is an anomalous depletion in sodium and potassium at the site, whereas there is an enrichment in sulfur found in the soils at the highland landing site,' said the study published in the journal Nature Communications Earth and Environment.
Detailing its significance and the plausible reasons for both depletion and abundance of certain metals, the researchers said,
'There is a potential presence of primitive lunar mantle materials at the landing site, which was excavated during formation of the South Pole-Aitken basin, around 4.3 Ga (billion years) ago and may have got redistributed by subsequent impacts on the SPA basin ejecta. While the primitive mantle contributed to the excess sulfur, it later got mixed up with the materials at the landing site,' the paper noted.
The South Pole-Aitken basin is one of the largest known impact craters on the lunar surface.
The low levels of sodium and potassium at the Shiv Shakti point, the researchers said, could suggest that these elements may not have originally existed at the place and time of the very formation of the SPA basin.
The variations in the elemental concentrations revealed by Chandrayaan 3 data has overturned findings made by previous lunar missions — the Apollo 16 and Luna 20 by the US and the Soviets, respectively.
According to the PRL team, Chandrayaan 3 data noted the concentration of sulfur to be 300-500 parts per million higher than in soils gathered by the above missions. The Indian team is studying this anomalous difference in the concentrations and trace the causes at the landing site.

Born in Ahmedabad in 1919, Dr Sarabhai came to be known as the father of the Indian space programme. 'ISRO affectionately commemorates the birthday of visionary space scientist, Dr. Vikram A Sarabhai. His remarkable contributions laid the foundation for the Indian Space Programme. After returning from Cambridge to an independent India in 1947, as a 28-year-old, he persuaded charitable trusts controlled by his family and friends to endow a research institution near home in Ahmedabad, laying the foundation for the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad on November 11, 1947. He was the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and also established the ISRO. He successfully convinced the government of the importance of a space programme for a developing country like India after the Russian Sputnik launch. "We must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems of man and society," Sarabhai had stated. Together with Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, widely regarded as the father of India's nuclear science programme, he set up the first rocket launching station in India. Dr. Sarabhai also started a project for the fabrication and launch of an Indian Satellite, enabling the first Indian satellite -- Aryabhata -- to be put in orbit in 1975 from a Russian Cosmodrome. IIT Kharagpur, IIST exploring collaboration in medical technology
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) and the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) are exploring the possibility of collaborating in the area of medical technology for space-related applications, IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty said here on Sunday (August 10, 2025). The IIST's work in mission-class hardware design, start-up incubation and strategic collaborations position India not just as a participant, but as a leader in global space innovation, Prof. Chakraborty said, delivering the convocation address at the 13th convocation of IIST held at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Valiyamala. Recent achievements of the IIST students have been admirable, he said. 'The IIST is the crucible of India's space leadership, a place where dreams take the form of rockets, satellites and future-ready solutions,' he said. Space, Prof. Chakraborty said, is no longer the domain of a few, but the shared ambition of the entire planet. Yet, India has a unique advantage, he said. 'We know how to do more with less. We innovate not just for prestige, but for people. Space technology today is not an isolated vertical. It is a grand convergence, a meeting point of artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology, climate science, philosophy, medicine and even law,' he said. IIST Chancellor B.N. Suresh underscored the importance of self-reliance, stating that imports need to be reduced in strategic areas that were key enablers of national security. ISRO Chairperson V. Narayanan addressed the students in virtual mode. IIST Director Dipankar Banerjee presented a report on the academic activities.
