Adam Idah at a Celtic crossroads season as Martin O'Neill admits he only saw teen powerhouse going in one direction

Big striker continues to split opinion among supporters despite 20 goals last term as former boss admits the time has come to change minds
Martin O'Neill cast an eye over a 17-year-old Adam Idah in his final months as Ireland manager and saw a youngster blessed by a raw power he was sure would see his career motor.

The former Celtic boss was fuelled with hope by the sight of Idah and Troy Parrott leading the Irish attack at the 2018 UEFA Under 17 Championships in England.

But five years on from the Green Army's charge to the quarter finals of that competition, O'Neill feared Idah's footballing journey was grinding to a halt.

A bit part player at Norwich, the player himself has since admitted his career was stalling in Norfolk.
So when last year's move to Celtic came about O'Neill admits he had doubts over the frontman's chances of getting back on track in the Parkhead fast lane.
Twenty goals including three in the Champions League is a fair return in his first full season after ending his loan stint as a Scottish Cup Final hero.

Yet a section of the Hoops support remain unsure of the Irishman who, despite his goal haul, has never truly convinced he's ready to command the number nine shirt.
It means the 24-year-old is at a crossroads with the new season off a running and Brendan Rodgers in the market for another striker.

O'Neill just hopes the 6ft 3in frontman can make the most of the attributes that made him a standout in that U17 competition at Loughborough and St George's.
He recalled: 'He was an underage player at the same time as Troy Parrott. Roy Keane and I went to Loughborough, it was the under-17s who were playing in an international tournament.
'He was outstanding at the time. He was big, he was strong, very, very strong. Sometimes you'd think to yourself 'well, there's no more growth in him so maybe when other people get a wee bit stronger…'

'But no, definitely, you could see he had plenty of talent.
'I did watch his career, but it was grinding to a bit of a halt at Norwich, not getting into the side.
'I thought that stepping up to Celtic might be too much for him. I thought it was. So well done to him.

'He's got a lot to live up to if he's going to lead the line at Celtic this season, and that's big.
'As a centre forward, you're expected to score goals, expected to score a lot of goals as well.
'And you're expected to be able to beat players, hold it up, run down the channels, do everything.

'Brendan should be able to teach him the game. He's improved since Norwich. He's made that step up.
'He's gone from there, where he wasn't playing regularly in a Championship side, and there he is at Celtic.
'But this is a big season for him. If he's going to start, this is a really big season.'

Idah's form int he last campaign fluctuated from a 14-game goal draught to ending that run with a deadly double in a Champions League blockbuster at Villa Park.
The inconsistency led to criticism from punters, pundits and ex-players.
But O'Neill said: 'That's the nature of the game. I just think you have to cut 'the noise'. Whatever that noise is. I hate that word as much as I hate the word 'transition'.

'The noise is there. It's there every single week, and you think you can be doing really well for a period of three months, then you might go four games without scoring a goal, and whoaaaa.. those three months suddenly disappear completely.
'That's called playing for the Old Firm. You've got to deal with it.
'I went to the game at Villa Park and he scored twice. You're talking about a team flying high in the Premier League. So if you can't get confidence from that, you'll never get it.'

Idah drew a blank as Celtic squeezed past St Mirren 1-0 on the opening day of the season ahead of this afternoon's trip to face Aberdeen leading to more flak from punters.
With just 10 days until the Champions League play off against either Kairat Almaty or Slovan Bratislava, the clock is ticking on Rodgers adding to his ranks ahead of the Euro campaign.
And O'Neill remembers all to well the feeling of anxiety growing as the end of the transfer window edged closer.

The man who led the Hoops to the 2003 UEFA Cup Final said: 'I'm hoping that Celtic get a few players in.
'I've been in the same situation as a manager when we haven't done business early on.
'Brendan wants to improve the team. I would be astonished if the board and Dermot didn't want to improve the team.

'Each day that counts down, I suppose, you get worried. I was exactly the same.
'As a manager, you're definitely looking to try and improve the team.
'You would say that at this minute, if Celtic are going to maintain last season's form, particularly in the Champions League, then you would think that you would need a bit of help.'

Twenty four years ago O'Neill's Hoops were blazing past Ajax via a 3-1 first leg win in Amsterdam on their way to the Champions League group stages where they dumped Porto, Rosenborg and famously Juventus in Glasgow but still bowed out after losing all three games away from home.
The 73-year-old still remembers that night in the Amsterdam ArenA like it was yesterday - and insists that should still be the benchmark for the current Hoops side.

He said: 'Amazing, honestly. Bobby Petta, Didier Agathe, and Chris Sutton scored.
'This is what Celtic and Rangers should be talking about. They should be plying their trade in the big leagues.
'The precedent was set years and years ago, certainly for Celtic with Jock Stein. And every manager that steps in.

'That seems as if it's a million miles away, and it probably is at this minute.
'It doesn't mean that you shouldn't be aspiring to that. You have to go for it.
'If you're in the Europa League, that's fine, but your aspirations should be the Champions League. I'm sure that's what Rangers are aiming for now.'

How Hibs benefit if Aston Villa sanction John McGinn transfer exit as Everton interest addressed

Hibs stand to benefit if John McGinn is allowed to leave Aston Villa this summer - with Everton one of the sides keen. The Scotland hero started out at St Mirren and moved on to Easter Road for a memorable three year spell, where he won the Scottish Cup and Championship. McGinn has now made himself Aston Villa captain, remaining with the Villans since joining them in 2018 while playing Championship football, embarking on a journey that's included Champions League action. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Now Everton boss David Moyes is said to be keen on a deal, with Newcastle United also monitoring the situation. Talk of an £18m bid has surfaced and the interested has been addressed on Sky Sports, with Hibs likely keeping track of developments. As part of the deal that clinched a move to Aston Villa, Hibs bagged a sell on fee of 15%, with St Mirren due 30% of that. Even with the Buddies taking a chunk, a substantial eight figure move would spark a cash windfall in Leith. John McGinn to Everton addressed Presenter Mark McAdam said: 'If you speak to anyone at the top of Aston Villa, they'll say not for sale. Club captain, absolutely no chance. We don't want to lose him. He's going into the final two years of his Aston Villa contract. We know how important he is to Unai Emery and that team, not just on the pitch, but off the pitch as well. He's an exceptional captain, exceptional leader, and someone that really brings and gels that dressing room together. 'But you can understand why there is interest in a player of his calibre and quality. David Moyes loves his leadership skills, loves his experience, and of course, that versatility, because he can play in multiple positions as well. So that's why there is that attraction to someone who I guess they maybe felt like they could tease out of Aston Villa. We know that Aston Villa have to be respectful and mindful of FFP and PSR at the moment as well because of their current situation. 'And maybe there will be one or two clubs that just try and tempt them with an offer. He is 30 years old. Now, he's not got a huge resale value, although we've been saying for years that resale value doesn't exist. Look at Son-Heung min going to LAFC for £20m at 33. So, if you're the right type of player, you've got the right type of global profile, there is still value there. Every time I talk about John McGinn, Hibs fans message me and say, what's happening? What's happening? Is he going? Because obviously for them, that chunk of money could be quite substantial for them to reinvest as well.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad John McGinn transfer prediction Former Wales striker Robert Earnshaw was also on the panel and made a prediction that would be music to the ears of the Easter Road coffers. He wonders if £30m could tempt Aston Villa into selling to Everton, which would bank Hibs a cool sum just over the £3m mark even with the St Mirren percentage to factor in. He added: 'There's still value there. John McGinn is an interesting one because this is my take on it. Everton have gone in and said, listen, would you take 18 million? I think if they up it, there'll be more of a discussion because he's a quality player, quality leader, fits Everton perfectly. Does £30m tempt you? I think there'll be more conversations with that. 'He's excellent. What you're going to get from McGinn is absolute heart, quality at the right time, leadership. But also, I think he's underrated in terms of he's all round, he's tackles, he's creating, he'll give the pass before the final pass. He adds so much to a team and of course, Aston Villa is not going to want him to leave, absolutely not. Maybe the right price, they might look at it, but as footballing-wise, no, no chance. I don't think he actually leaves, but there'll be some discussions and temptation for sure if the price goes up higher.'

Managing Rangers – Eggs put in 6ft 3' Arsenal star's basket and huge £5m decision to be made

The state of play as Rangers look to continue their busy summer of transfer incomings and outgoings following the arrival of new boss Russell Martin Rangers may need to strengthen further ahead of the transfer deadline if they are to take the fight to Celtic this season. ‌ The Gers have made a mixed start to their Scottish Premiership campaign, while they are on course to qualify for the Champions League playoff round following Tuesday's superb 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen. ‌ The true test of progress under Russell Martin will be how close they can get to their Old Firm foes, who romped to the title by 17 points last season. ‌ Martin has made a number of transfer inroads following his arrival, with nine summer signings, but more incomings are on the cards ahead of the September 1 deadline. The Record looks at the current state of play and what a dream scenario could look like... Focus on signing Arsenal keeper Martin has said he is open to signing a keeper to provide competition for Jack Butland, and Karl Hein would be the perfect option. With a loan deal for Brighton's Carl Rushworth off, the Light Blues have reportedly turned their attention to Gunners back-up Hein, according to reports in Germany. The 23-year-old joined the Gunners' youth ranks in 2018 but has made just one first-team appearance. The 6ft 3' stopper spent last season on loan at Real Valladolid in La Liga, making 31 appearances as the team were relegated. The arrival of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea will have shunted the Estonia international even further down the pecking order at the Gunners. Given his age, he may feel it is time to sever his Arsenal links permanently. Sevilla are also in the running to sign Hein, who has previously been linked with Portsmouth and QPR. £5m decision made Cyriel Dessers ' future may be at Rangers after all, despite Martin's admission that he was the only player in his squad to attract a formal bid this summer. That bid is widely thought to have been from AEK Athens. ‌ It is believed Dessers had even agreed a £30,000-a-week deal with the Greek giants before the Gers' new American owners dug their heels in by refusing to accept less than £5million for the Nigerian. AEK appear to have moved on, signing Luka Jovic from AC Milan. Martin has openly praised Dessers' attitude, suggesting he could be part of his long-term plans. The 30-year-old started against Viktoria Plzen, scoring from the spot in a superb all-round performance. ‌ Billy Dodds, part of Barry Ferguson's coaching staff at the end of last season, believes cashing in on Dessers this late in the window would be a major mistake. He said: 'It would be a gamble now. I think the big man has bounced back and I love players who show that.' Dodds added: 'He's scored again and he's probably put it back in Rangers' court. I think probably the Rangers did want to sell. But now there's a question mark about it.' Go after a Mendy alternative Rangers remain in the hunt for a central defender after appearing to have missed out on Real Betis's Nobel Mendy. The Light Blues had expressed an interest in the 6ft 2' centre-back as Martin looks to beef up his defensive options. However, Mendy looks set to remain in Spain, with Rayo Vallecano now leading the race to sign the talented 20-year-old, according to reports in the country. Mendy was viewed as an alternative to former target Conor Coady, who has joined Wrexham instead. Rangers could look at the array of experienced free agents who remain available, including former Manchester United man Victor Lindelof, 31, ex-West Ham centre-back Kurt Zouma, 30, and Ben Mee, 35, formerly of Brentford and Burnley.

Newcastle strike £34.3m transfer deal for defender as Toon finally land summer target

Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan with Eddie Howe poised to enjoy a rare transfer success this summer following several big misses Newcastle have agreed a deal to land AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw after the two clubs settled on a fee of £34.3million that will see the German head to Tyneside for a medical. ‌ It is a major breakthrough for the Magpies, who have missed out on a number of targets this summer, but the versatile defender is edging towards a move to St James' Park. Thiaw will provide competition at the heart of the defence. ‌ Newcastle see the 24-year-old as the right-sided replacement for Fabian Schar, who turns 34 in December, reports the Daily Mail. Thiaw would become just the second major signing for Eddie Howe this summer after he also landed Antony Elanga from Nottingham Forest. ‌ Beyond that though it has been a frustrating summer for the club, who have just returned to the Champions League, yet have seen a number of the players they've pursued head to other clubs. Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo and James Trafford were all on their radar before they decided to move to some of Newcastle's Premier League rivals. Howe will also have been fearing the departure of Alexander Isak, who had made it known he wanted to seek pastures new. That led to the club's interest in Benjamin Sesko, only to see their bid for the then RB Leipzig star rejected. Manchester United were quick to come to the table and the Slovenian completed his move to Manchester on Sautrday. Yoane Wissa is another player Newcastle have pursued, but not signed. The Athletic now claims that the Magpies are now considering a move for Porto's Samu Aghehowa. No formal approach has been made but the club are keen after seeing Aghehowa excel for the Portuguese side last season following his move from Atletico Madrid. The 21-year-old netted 27 goals in 45 games in all competitions. Newcastle though have made it clear to Isak that he will not be leaving this summer - ending his hopes of a move to Liverpool. The Swede was told of the club's decision and it is understood he did not take it well and will continue training away from the first-team. It is thought that, even if a new striker is signed by Newcastle, they will not u-turn on their firm stance regarding Isak's future. Howe has been aware of the hierarchy's stance has been left to smooth things out with the player. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
