Protest over ‘possible inclusion' of Assam hamlet in Meghalaya
Silchar: Protests have erupted in Cachar district's Assam-Meghalaya border belt over the reported possibility of including Baikam Khasi Punji, a hamlet under Assam's Katigorah assembly constituency, in Meghalaya as part of an ongoing boundary settlement process. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The All Assam Adivasi Students' Association and the All Barak Valley Karbi Students' Association on Sunday warned that 'not an inch of Assam's land' would be ceded to the neighbouring state. The organisations alleged that groups of Khasi residents from across the border routinely create hurdles in farming, trespass into fields, and intimidate locals in Baikam Khasi Punji. They cautioned that if the hamlet is formally transferred to Meghalaya, such incidents could escalate, raising the risk of violent clashes. Villagers claimed the move would alter the demographic balance of the area, giving the Khasi community an upper hand and undermining the long-standing social harmony along the inter-state border. "If this land is handed over, our livelihoods and security will be at stake," said a resident, pointing out that over 800 families in Malidahar, Gumra Tea Estate, Jalalpur, and neighbouring villages depend on these lands for agriculture and daily sustenance. The protesting organisations have urged chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Cachar district administration to intervene immediately to halt any such proposal. "We will intensify our agitation if the authorities go ahead with this plan," warned leaders of the protesting student bodies. The protests come against the backdrop of the decades-old Assam-Meghalaya border dispute. The two states share an 884.9-km boundary, with Meghalaya staking claim to 12 disputed stretches. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In March 2022, the first phase of a settlement was signed to resolve six of these, but several areas — including parts of West Khasi Hills and Cachar — remain contested. Talks on the second phase are underway, and local residents fear Baikam Khasi Punji might be included in the next round of territorial adjustments. Officials in Cachar have not confirmed any such proposal.

Khasi clans unite against PIL to defend matrilineal traditions
Shillong: A united delegation representing the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Kur: Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep — a confederation of Khasi clans — met with the chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Shemborlang Rynjah, to formally extend their support to the council in connection with the PIL filed by Syngkhong Rympei Thymmai. The PIL challenges the criteria for issuance of scheduled tribe (ST) certificates in Meghalaya, particularly seeking recognition for descendants who inherit their father's or husband's surname under a patriarchal system — contrary to the matrilineal traditions of Khasi society. RL Blah, spokesperson for the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Kur, conveyed the confederation's full support to the KHADC in opposing the petition. He emphasised the importance of safeguarding Khasi matrilineal customs, which are deeply embedded in tribal life — from inheritance and land tenure to the election of traditional functionaries, all of which are based on clan lineage through the mother. Blah also recalled the legal uncertainty following the 2014 high court verdict that questioned the authority of headmen and village councils. He said traditional institutions were only reinstated after a successful appeal to the Supreme Court, which reaffirmed their legitimacy — highlighting the need to preserve indigenous governance frameworks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Can Get This Generic Viagra for 87¢ - Details Inside Health Alliance by Friday Plans Learn More Undo Cultural commentator Raphael Warjri criticised SRT's demand, arguing that it attempts to align Khasi customs with the mainstream "general category" structure of mainland India. He asserted that such reforms undermine constitutional protections for tribal communities. "Customary law is the product of a society's collective conscience and should not be diluted by the liberal choices of a minuscule patriarchal minority, especially when they contradict the deeply rooted matrilineal mandate of the Khasi people," Warjri said. The delegation reaffirmed its solidarity with the KHADC and their commitment to protecting Meghalaya's matrilineal heritage.
