Andhra Pradesh government launches midwife training drive to reduce C-section deliveries
The first-of-its-kind initiative aims to increase the rate of natural deliveries by deploying 1,264 specially trained midwives across 86 govt hospitals with high delivery rates.
The programme, funded under the National Health Mission (NHM), includes an intensive 18-month training for each midwife. The training will focus on all stages of childbirth, including expulsion of the baby, placenta, fetal membranes, and physiological stages of labour.
Each midwife will also receive a monthly stipend during training. The estimated cost of training per midwife is Rs 2.5 lakh.
According to govt health records, 56.12% of all deliveries in Andhra Pradesh during 2024-25 were C-sections. While govt hospitals accounted for 41.4% of these, private hospitals contributed the remaining. Officials cite lack of awareness and skill among existing staff nurses as a key reason for the high C-section rate in govt hospitals.

To address this, the new programme includes measures to train nurses and improve support for natural deliveries.
Yadav has instructed health officials to expand the programme to primary health centres (PHCs) in rural and tribal regions, where delivery volumes are high. He stressed on the importance of deploying at least one trained midwife at each PHC to ensure safe and effective support for natural births.
Speaking to TOI, state maternal health additional director Dr Anil Kumar said training for about 60 midwives has been already completed and they have been deployed at various govt hospitals across the state.
When asked about plans to keep a tab on C-section deliveries at private hospitals in the state, he said the govt has been conducting criss-cross C-section audit inspections at private hospitals with 100% C-sections deliveries.
A five-member team comprising of the DMHO, anaesthesian, pediatrician, gynaecologist, and project officer visit the hospitals and examine the C-section deliveries case sheets and check whether Robson Classification model was followed or not.
"If private hospitals show no improvements in C-section deliveries in the next three months after the audit inspection, they would be removed from Aarogya Sri empanelled hospitals," Anil Kumar added.

In a major blow to healthcare access in Haryana, nearly 650 private hospitals empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat scheme have warned that they will cease providing treatment under the program from midnight of August 7 unless the state government clears pending dues amounting to over Rs 500 Indian Medical Association's (IMA) Haryana chapter has officially warned that unless payments due till July 15 are cleared and earlier commitments fulfilled, all empanelled hospitals will suspend Ayushman services from August that happens, the responsibility for any inconvenience to poor patients will lie solely with the Government of Haryana,' the IMA ISSUES PLAGUING THE SCHEME The IMA Haryana has cited a systemic breakdown in the scheme's administration. Cusat suspends regular classes after outbreak of contagious diseases
Kochi: Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) suspended regular classes starting Friday until Tuesday after several students residing at the university hostels were diagnosed with contagious diseases, including chickenpox and H1N1. University registrar informed that online classes would be held during this period. "Vice-chancellor ordered that all regular classes in the university, from Aug 1, 2025, to Aug 5, 2025, will be conducted in online mode to avoid further spread of the contagious diseases reported from some of the university hostels," stated an email communication from the registrar sent to department heads of the varsity. The email communication sought all students in the university, except non-Keralites, to immediately vacate the rooms until Tuesday. According to students, more cases were reported at Sarovar Hostel and Anaswara Hostel. "At my hostel, at least six students were diagnosed with various diseases, including three students with chickenpox and two with H1N1, and a student earlier diagnosed with influenza," said a female student at Anaswara Hostel. The university merely switched to online classes for a day," said the student. However, registrar Arun A U told TOI that there is no situation to panic as only four students were diagnosed with chicken pox, and the university was closed to reduce the spread of the disease. "When we initially switched classes to online mode for a day, students continued to stay at hostels. This led us to close down the hostel for a few days to ensure there is no spread of contagious diseases," said Arun. Arun also said the university informed Kalamassery municipality health wing to conduct fumigation on the campus, including hostels. The university also intends to implement extensive cleanliness measures to ensure students can continue their classes without interruption after they return from the break.
