A Switch 2-less Nintendo Direct will stream on March 27
The stream will run for around 30 minutes and focus on upcoming Switch games. There won't be any Switch 2 info, but pretty much every game you see here will run on the new console anyway, thanks to backwards compatibility.
Since this isn't billed as an Indie World Direct (those focus on indie games), it's not really clear what we can expect from this one. Nintendo's developers will largely be focused on making Switch 2 games at this point. Still, the Switch has a massive install base — the company has sold more than 150 million of those consoles — so Nintendo probably won't want to leave all those players behind any time soon.
To that end, we can expect a stream of games for the original Switch to keep coming for the foreseeable future. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, for instance, is still slated to hit the Switch sometime this year. Third-party games will still be coming to the Switch as well, including a certain one from Team Cherry that we expect to show up in every single gaming showcase but won't mention here because we don't want to jinx it.

Nintendo's popular new ‘Mario Kart' cow draws a protest letter from PETA
Geek Life: Fun stories, memes, humor and other random items at the intersection of tech, science, business and culture. SEE MORE Cow, a breakout star in the new 'Mario Kart World' video game, wears a nose ring that is viewed as a painful accessory by the animal rights group PETA. (Screenshot via Nintendo on YouTube) The moos turned to boos over the depiction of a popular new video game cow character. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is protesting the design of Cow, a scooter-riding farm animal in the new 'Mario Kart World' because the character wears a nose ring. 'Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control, and even drag animals to their deaths,' PETA said in a letter (in full below) Thursday to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa. Nintendo of America is headquartered in Redmond, Wash. The game launched exclusively on the new Nintendo Switch 2 game console, which released in June to much fanfare. And Cow has become a breakout star, as The New York Times reported in July, with videos on social media showcasing the bovine's popularity. PETA is less enthralled — at least when it comes to the nose ring. The organization is calling for Nintendo to redesign Cow's look, so it can 'race freely — without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines.' Read PETA's letter to Nintendo, and watch a trailer for 'Mario Kart World' below: Dear Mr. Furukawa: Greetings! I'm writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). PETA entities have more than 10 million members and supporters globally. We herd there's a new star in Mario Kart World: Cow! She is already winning hearts everywhere—including ours. But one detail has us hitting the brakes: The brass ring in Cow's nose. Would you please show empathy towards bovines and remove the nose ring? Here's why this is so important: Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control, and even drag animals to their deaths. These brass rings are crudely stabbed through the sensitive septum of cows and bulls, which can cause lasting pain and discomfort. The dairy industry will also clip spiked nose rings on baby cows so that the comforting act of nursing from their mother causes her pain and the baby is rejected and kicked away. To control bulls, a chain might be fastened from the nose ring to the bull's horn for even more pain-driven control. The brass ring in Cow's nose glosses over real world violence and cruelty to animals. That's why we're asking you to give this beloved bovine a small but meaningful upgrade: Remove the nose ring and let Cow race freely—without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines. Every animal is someone. So leave the rings to Sonic and let Cow breathe free!

Ratatan, a spiritual successor to Patapon, hits early access on September 19
We have some great news for fans of rhythm games. Ratatan hits Steam early access on September 19 . This is a spiritual successor to one of the most renowned rhythm games of all time, Patapon . The designer behind the original game, Hiroyuki Kotani, is involved. The mechanics here are similar to Patapon and its sequels, but look to be more elaborate . The game tasks players with rhythmically controlling cute little soldiers called Cobuns, but directing these warriors while avoiding damage is easier said than done. We said it felt like "the gaming equivalent of patting your head and rubbing your stomach." The developer also announced some new features coming to the game. It revealed two new worlds, including a jungle and a garden that's been frozen over, along with new soldier and weapon types. This is 2025, so the game also features a roguelike element, as players can encounter unique power-ups and buffs during each run. There's still a lot we don't know about this title, including the price and when it'll eventually come to gaming consoles. The developer has a livestream planned for September 14 hosted by voice actor Tomokazu Sugita. The stream "will feature the latest updates, our post-launch roadmap and information on upcoming events." Patapon originally came out all the way back in 2007 for the PSP. It was followed by a handful of sequels, all originally for Sony's first portable console. The first two games have been ported to other consoles, including the Switch and PS5 .

Amazon Deals of the Day: Get a Camera for Your Nintendo Switch 2 for the Lowest Price of the Year
Amazon sells a vast array of products, with new ones arriving daily across multiple categories, including home essentials, tech gadgets and furniture. Lucky for us, the retail giant loves cutting prices as much as it loves adding new products. But deciding which offers are worth grabbing (and which aren't) is a full-time job, so we did all the heavy lifting, hand-picking the top markdowns from the bunch. Today, we spotted the Logitech Brio 501 webcam down to it's lowest price of the year. We also found Anker's MagGo portable magnetic charger at a nice 30% discount. As well as the Shark Navigator vacuum for 30% off, too. The Nintendo Switch 2 is one of the most popular gaming systems out there. And if you already got your hands on one, it's time to pick up some accessories like a camera. The Logitech Brio 501 webcam is a great option. It takes HD video in 1080p, making sure you can be seen clearly. It even uses features like auto light correction and auto-framing to automatically adjust the light in your environment to make sure you look the best and you're centered in frame. The camera can tilt, too, if you want to be at an angle. And for when you're not using the camera, simply slide on the privacy cover for peace of mind. This camera is normally listed at $130. But this limited-time deal brings the price down to $100, the lowest we've seen all year. With many of us going to school or work in-person almost everyday, keeping our a full battery on our essential devices all day isn't always easy. Sure, we can bring our cords and charging blocks, but there's not always somewhere to plug it in. If you're wanting to charge your phone on the go, the Anker MagGo charger is made for exactly that. It's a wireless, portable, magnetic charger. And it's compatible with the iPhone 12 and newer. Simply snap it onto your phone to let your phone charge. It's pretty powerful at 5,000mAh. Plus, it has temperature control technology to prevent overheating. It comes in a few different colors so you can pick whichever matches your phone or case best. This charger is pretty affordable at $40. But it just got even cheaper. A generous 30% discount has dropped the price down to $28. It's not the record-low price, but it's only $4 away from it. And, every color is discounted. With so many kinds of vacuums out there, it can be hard picking which one is best for you. A great option is the Shark Navigator Lift-Away vacuum. It has Advanced Swivel Steering so you can get around your furniture and the corners and even includes extended reach so you can get all the way up to your ceilings. The vacuum is completely sealed so all the dust, dirt and germs stay inside the vacuum. If you have furry friends, it does a great job of cleaning up pet fur, especially if you use the included pet power brush. It also comes with a dusting brush and a crevice tool. This wired vacuum is normally $200. But this limited-time deal knocks 30% off the price, coming down to $140. That brings it back to the lowest price of the year, so don't miss out. Although this vacuum comes in three colors, note that only the white/silver option is down to this price. With so many deals on Amazon, deciding which ones are worth your money can be difficult. But CNET combs through what the world's largest online retailer has to offer each day and gathers the best deals for you to check out.
