'Masterpiece' horror film with 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating streaming on Prime
Released in 2017, One Cut of the Dead has been dubbed an essential horror for both zombie and found footage fans alike.
Directed by Shinichirou Ueda, it follows hack director Higurashi (Takayuki Hamatsu) and his crew as they travel to a WWII facility to shoot a low-budget zombie film.
However, they soon find themselves fighting for their lives when they're attacked by real zombies.
It was made for just ¥3 million (£15,114), and made a whopping ¥3.12 billion (£15.7M) in Japan, making box office history by earning over 1,000 times its budget
One Cut of the Dead received widespread critical acclaim, being named the best found footage film ever made by Rotten Tomatoes.
It is the only found footage film on the site to ever receive a 100% score.
On the site, the critics' consensus reads: 'Brainy and bloody in equal measure, One Cut of the Dead reanimates the moribund zombie genre with a refreshing blend of formal daring and clever satire.'
In their review, Austin Chronicle said: 'One Cut of the Dead isn't just charming. It's an earnest and funny love letter to all the microbudget dreamers who use all their heart and ingenuity to make their movie.'
Los Angeles Times wrote: 'A master class in endless narrative inventiveness and an ode to the resourceful and collaborative spirit of hands-on filmmaking, One Cut of the Dead amounts to an explosively hilarious rarity.'
Bloody Disgusting added: 'Shinichiro Ueda's zombie comedy is one that purposefully pretends to offer familiar zombie schlock only to rip the rug out from under us in an innovative, hilarious way. The level of detail is uncanny, and the comedy is equally matched by charm.'
Little White Lies said One Cut of the Dead was 'a genuinely clever and loving tribute to cinema at its most homemade,' while The Hollywood Reporter lauded it 'the perfect antidote to zombie fever.'
IndieWire said: 'Drunk on its own DIY energy and deeply in love with everything it's doing, One Cut of the Dead is a euphoric ode to the chaos (and compromises) of genre filmmaking.' More Trending
Speaking after the film's release, director Ueda opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about the runaway success of One Cut of the Dead.
'Well, there are various levels of 'hit,' but two or three weeks into its first run at a small Tokyo cinema I started to realize something was happening,' he said.
'The first week was mainly older guys, regular indie film fans, but in the second week there were more younger people and women. Then I started seeing people in the street with One Cut of the Dead T-shirts on and heard people talking about the film. I've been doing indie films all this time and until now I never experienced anything like that.'
One Cut of the Dead is streaming on Shudder via Amazon Prime Video

Jeff Bezos ‘obsessed' with making wife Lauren Sanchez next Bond girl
Jeff Bezos is 'obsessed' with casting his wife Lauren Sanchez in the latest Bond film, Hollywood insiders have claimed. The Amazon founder is reportedly pushing the makers of Bond 26 to consider Sanchez, a journalist, trained pilot, and one-time astronaut, for a role as the latest Bond girl. Since Ursula Andress first hit screens as the original Bond girl in 1961 playing Honey Ryder in Dr No, the role of the fictional spy's love interest has become a coveted one. The role, which has become almost as iconic as that of Mr Bond himself, has been played by the likes of Eva Green, Honor Blackman, Halle Berry and Jane Seymour. 'This isn't just fantasy casting - Jeff wants her on screen, period,' a Hollywood source told Rob Shuter, a British gossip blogger and former executive editor of OK! magazine's US edition. The insider added that the billionaire is 'obsessed' with finding a role for his wife, 55, in the new film, which is slated for release next year or early 2027. Despite fervent speculation, it's still not clear who will replace Daniel Craig as 007 in the film. The actor bowed out of the franchise after starring in No Time To Die in 2021. The films director was announced as Denis Villeneuve, the French-Canadian filmmaker behind the Dune franchise, in July. Bezos, the third-wealthiest person in the world, took over the franchise when he acquired MGM as part of a takeover of MGM studios by Amazon in 2022. The original producing founders of the Bond franchise, the Broccoli family, controlled the franchise since the first 007 film, Dr No, in 1962. Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman bought the rights to Ian Fleming's spy novels in 1961 and set up the British studio Eon Productions, in London. Bezos's takeover sparked concern the beloved British spy and his adventures would become 'commercialised', with author William Boyd warning fans they would soon see '007 theme parks'. 'Certainly wait for Bond aftershave – and for the theme park and the dinner jackets,' he told The Observer. 'The new owners will have to commodify everything about their billion-dollar purchase, so there will be nightclubs and vodkas.' Shortly after acquiring the Bond franchise, Bezos tweeted: 'Who'd you pick as the next Bond?' prompting a flurry of posts from concerned fans who begged him: 'Please don't ruin this franchise'. Others urged the 61-year-old to be true to Mr Bond's roots and keep him a Brit. According to Mr Shuster's Substack, the Amazon mogul can 'do what he wants' with the films, after handing over a rumoured $8.5m (£6.3m). While Sanchez is not well known for her acting, she has featured in a number of films. Sanchez played a television journalist in Fight Club, and made minor appearances in The Day After Tomorrow, Fantastic Four, and White House Down.

Jeremy Clarkson slammed by fans for controversial pub change
In the latest season of Clarkson's Farm on Amazon Prime Video, the main focus for Mr Clarkson and co was getting his pub - The Farmer's Dog - up and running. Clarkson announced last August that his pub would be all British, but admitted he was struggling to find certain ingredients. Despite the initial quick turnaround of getting his pub up and running, his attempts to go "all British" hit a wall. It looks like this year's harvest will be catastrophic. That should be a worry for anyone who eats food. If a disaster on this scale had befallen any other industry, there would be a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth. He posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: "We are attempting to go all British for the food at my pub. But we are struggling to find black pepper grown here. Can anyone help?" Following this, the latest series depicts signs up in the pub declaring that the pub is 100% British, which means there is no ketchup served there. However, Condimaniac took up the challenge to create a 100% British ketchup and then aimed to get it stocked at the Farmer's Dog. The condiment company behind the creation of a 100% British-sourced ketchup has declared victory in its bid to provide a ketchup for Jeremy Clarkson's pub. On Instagram, co-founder Kier Kemp said he was really impressed by the pub. "It is not just a gimmick for them they do really live and breathe this 100% British thing," he said. Mr Kemp also added it was one of the 'best wholesale clients I have ever dealt with'. "The team there, the Diddly Squat farm shop that's on site and the pub, everyone I have met is super lovely," he said. "I am glad that I can report they are actually nice people. It is not always like that." However, fans took issue with the fact that the Diddly Squat seemingly made them relabel their product to include their own brand. Recommended reading: On a recent TikTok showing the creation of the sauce and bottle, fans blasted the decision. One said: "Hate that they made you get a new label for it". Another commented: "As if they made you relabel it" Whilst someone else replied: "I don't think it's right to make the label change, it's YOUR sauce promoting HIS business, he doesn't need to be on the label that big anyway. Newsquest has approached Diddly Squat Farm for comment.
