Missing Kerala pilgrims safe after U'khand cloudburst
The tourists are currently sheltered in a military camp. Though present at the location when the cloudburst struck, the group escaped harm. Of the 28 members, 20 are Keralites settled in Maharashtra, while the remaining eight are from various districts in Kerala.
Among them is a Tripunithura-based couple, Narayanan Nair and his wife Sreedevi. Speaking to TOI, Sreedevi said, "We are safe here in the Uttarakhand military camp.
As per the information from officials, road traffic is expected to resume in two days. Till then, we will remain here."
Narayanan, a retired Spices Board officer and Sreedevi had left for the Char Dham pilgrimage six days ago. They had completed visits to all the major shrines and were preparing to return when the disaster struck.
Back home, members of the Palliparambukavu Residents Association, where the couple has a house, tried to contact them after hearing about the cloudburst but were initially unsuccessful.
Their neighbour, Padmanabhan, said contact was only established by Wednesday noon.
Their son, calling from abroad, was able to reach them first and inform the residents' association of their safety. Sreedevi later shared a voice message in the association's WhatsApp group, assuring everyone that they were safe and would return once road access is restored.

‘Better roads, cleanliness making temple town global destination'
1 2 Temples are not just places of worship — they are also centres of economic activity and pride, said author Akshat Gupta while speaking at a session on 'Life, Travel and Play: The Real Impact of Infrastructure in New Uttar Pradesh', held during TOI Dialogues on Thursday. The panel brought together voices from literature, sports, and cinema to decode the transformative role of infrastructure in people's everyday lives. Gupta, known for his writings on Indian mythology and history, said that the state's temple cities like Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura, and Chitrakoot were witnessing cultural and economic revival. "Better roads, cleanliness, lighting, and transport facilities are turning temple towns into global destinations. Pilgrimage is no longer an isolated activity—it's a driver of jobs, hospitality, and connectivity," he said. Former Indian cricketer RP Singh highlighted the rise of sports infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh. "From Basti to Bareilly and Prayagraj to Saharanpur, we are now seeing stadiums coming up. This encourages youth to take sports seriously," he said. Singh applauded the govt's investment in sports academies and rural outreach, which have improved access and exposure for young athletes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Argentina: Kitchen Remodeling Trends in 2025 May Surprise You Kitchen Remodeling | Search ads Search Now Undo "Sports should be taught as a subject in schools and colleges to make India a sporting nation. Though we have progressed on the world stage, we need to do better," he added. Actress and social activist Gul Panag brought in a personal and gendered perspective on travel and mobility. "As someone who travels frequently by road and air, I can confidently say that connectivity in Uttar Pradesh has vastly improved. The expressways, well-lit highways, and increasing number of airports make travel smoother and safer — especially for solo women travellers," she said. Panag pointed out that the 'ease of movement' also supports working women, small entrepreneurs, and tourism operators by reducing time and logistical challenges. She also appealed to the govt to start programmes that inculcate education about civic sense — and ensure its enforcement. All three panellists agreed that infrastructure is not just about cement and steel, but about access, dignity, and aspiration. Birsa zoo finally welcomes first giraffe after 9-year wait
1 2 Ranchi: The Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ormanjhi, Ranchi, has welcomed its first giraffe, named 'Misti'. The six-year-old female animal, belonging to the northern giraffe species native to parts of Africa, arrived on Thursday from West Bengal's Alipore zoo as part of a strategic animal exchange programme. This significant addition marks the end of a nine-year attempt, during which technical hurdles delayed the introduction of giraffes to the Ranchi zoo. Director Jabber Singh said, "This exchange is not only an example of cooperation between the two institutions but will also enrich wildlife conservation efforts and enhance the display of diverse species for visitors." Misti, who stands at an impressive 12 feet, will reside in a specially designed 14-foot enclosure, ensuring her comfort and safety. The zoo has plans to introduce a male giraffe in the next phase of the programme, further bolstering its commitment to wildlife diversity. The journey from Alipore to Ranchi was a meticulous 24-hour operation, with zoo officials taking extra precautions to ensure Misti's safe arrival. "Due to its height and road conditions, we had to stop at various locations, and the carrying vehicle also had to drive slowly so that the animal does not get injured on bumpy roads," said zoo vet Om Prakash Sahu. In addition to Misti, the zoo also welcomed a pair of Silver Pheasants, adding to its growing collection of exotic birds. This exchange follows the arrival of a pair of Asiatic lions, 'Abhay' and 'Shabri', from Chhattisgarh's Nandanvan Zoo and Safari in June. The introduction of these new species is expected to draw increased visitor numbers, offering a unique opportunity for the public to engage with and learn about diverse wildlife.
