‘Better roads, cleanliness making temple town global destination'
2
Temples are not just places of worship — they are also centres of economic activity and pride, said author Akshat Gupta while speaking at a session on 'Life, Travel and Play: The Real Impact of Infrastructure in New Uttar Pradesh', held during TOI Dialogues on Thursday.
The panel brought together voices from literature, sports, and cinema to decode the transformative role of infrastructure in people's everyday lives.
Gupta, known for his writings on Indian mythology and history, said that the state's temple cities like Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura, and Chitrakoot were witnessing cultural and economic revival. "Better roads, cleanliness, lighting, and transport facilities are turning temple towns into global destinations.
Pilgrimage is no longer an isolated activity—it's a driver of jobs, hospitality, and connectivity," he said.
Former Indian cricketer RP Singh highlighted the rise of sports infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh. "From Basti to Bareilly and Prayagraj to Saharanpur, we are now seeing stadiums coming up. This encourages youth to take sports seriously," he said.
Singh applauded the govt's investment in sports academies and rural outreach, which have improved access and exposure for young athletes.

"Sports should be taught as a subject in schools and colleges to make India a sporting nation. Though we have progressed on the world stage, we need to do better," he added.
Actress and social activist Gul Panag brought in a personal and gendered perspective on travel and mobility. "As someone who travels frequently by road and air, I can confidently say that connectivity in Uttar Pradesh has vastly improved. The expressways, well-lit highways, and increasing number of airports make travel smoother and safer — especially for solo women travellers," she said.
Panag pointed out that the 'ease of movement' also supports working women, small entrepreneurs, and tourism operators by reducing time and logistical challenges. She also appealed to the govt to start programmes that inculcate education about civic sense — and ensure its enforcement.
All three panellists agreed that infrastructure is not just about cement and steel, but about access, dignity, and aspiration.

Sikhs seek tracks of faith, not just festival specials
AMRITSAR : Indian Railways is reportedly conducting a feasibility study to connect the five Sikh Takhts—a move that could ease travel, reduce journey time, and allow devotees to visit at their convenience to fulfil their religious aspirations, as the current connectivity makes each journey difficult and full of inconveniences. 'The Five Takhts are the seats of Sikh power, history, and spiritual authority, but there is no direct connection between them,' said Sikh politico-religious observer S. Parshotam. . He said travel from Amritsar to Patna, Bathinda to Nanded, or Anandpur Sahib to Takht Damdama Sahib is a test of endurance—detours, delays, poor waiting facilities, and multiple connecting trains. "There is no straight route and no guaranteed service", added he. Notably, Sikhs across India and abroad want to visit all five Takhts—not once in a lifetime, but when they choose. They wish to pay obeisance, fulfil religious duties, and stay rooted in the legacy of their Gurus, but the system doesn't allow it easily. Stating that the Railways currently runs special trains only during major festivals or events—such as Gurpurabs and anniversaries—but this service is neither regular, reliable, nor sufficient, railway affairs expert P.C. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? Desert Order Undo Sharma informed that a feasibility study is underway to establish city-to-city links, aimed at shortening travel time and increasing comfort. 'But plans don't carry passengers. Proposals don't reduce fatigue. It has to translate on the ground,' he said. A railways official here who didn't wish to give his name said, 'The extension of the Mumbai-Jalna Vande Bharat Express to Nanded represents a landmark achievement in improving connectivity to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib. The Delhi-Amritsar Vande Bharat Express has revolutionised connectivity to the Golden Temple and Akal Takht, providing high-speed rail service that connects the national capital with Punjab's spiritual heart. This service enables devotees from Delhi and Northern India to visit Amritsar with unprecedented comfort and efficiency.' 'What Sikhs are asking is simple. A regular rail service that links the five Takhts. Not luxury. Not tourism. Just respect for religious practice. Just a route that makes sense,' said Purshotam adding that despite an ongoing feasibility study , its report is yet to come. Delhi Metro Records Highest-Ever Daily Ridership On Aug 8
New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Saturday announced that it had achieved its highest-ever single-day ridership on August 8, 2025, with 81,87,674 passenger journeys recorded across all operational corridors. The milestone came just a day before the Rakshabandhan festival, when travel demand typically surges across the National Capital Region. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), DMRC said it had operated 92 additional train trips on August 8 to cater to the increased passenger flow. For August 9, the day of Rakshabandhan, the corporation scheduled 455 extra trips to provide convenience to commuters. 'DMRC achieves the highest-ever passenger journeys on August 8, 2025, with 81,87,674 journeys across all lines. To meet the Rakshabandhan travel demand, DMRC ran 92 additional trips on 8th Aug and operating 455 extra trips on 9th Aug for passenger convenience,' DMRC posted on X. However, while the DMRC celebrated its achievement, many Delhiites on Saturday shared mixed experiences of their metro rides. Social media was flooded with images and videos of crowded platforms and jam-packed coaches, particularly on busy corridors like the Yellow, Blue, and Violet lines. Several passengers described the experience as 'extremely packed' and 'uncomfortable,' with some reporting delays in boarding due to heavy footfall. Others noted that while additional trains helped, the sheer volume of travellers ahead of the festival made commuting difficult. Transport experts say such record-breaking ridership days are a reminder of both the Metro's popularity and the need for continued expansion and crowd-management measures during peak festival seasons. The DMRC currently operates nearly 400 km of network across more than a dozen lines, serving Delhi and neighbouring cities including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Bahadurgarh.
