CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias was taken off the field on a cart after sustaining a left lower leg injury in the third inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
Arias went deep into the hole to field a grounder hit by Masyn Winn with one out, but caught his left spike on the grass and awkwardly rolled his ankle. The ball wound up in left field for a single.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder immediately grabbed his lower leg and remained prone on the field for several minutes. He was fitted with an immobilizer before being lifted onto the medical cart that drove him off the field.
The Guardians will provide details about his injury once Arias undergoes an examination.
Arias is batting .231 with six homers and 31 RBIs in 77 games. This is the 25-year-old Venezuelan's first full season as a starter.

White Sox rally for 4 runs in seventh to beat Giants 5-2 and keep Verlander winless

CHICAGO — Kyle Teel hit a go-ahead, two-run double with the bases loaded in the seventh and the Chicago White Sox beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Sunday to keep Justin Verlander winless in 13 starts. Jonathan Cannon and five relievers combined to strike out 11. Tyler Gilbert (2-1) struck out two in an inning for the win. Mike Vasil pitched around a walk in the ninth for his second save. Mike Tauchman and Chase Meidroth singled with one out off Erik Miller (4-1) in the seventh before Miguel Vargas drew a walk against Ryan Walker to load the bases. Teel doubled, Walker balked to bring in another run and Lenyn Sosa singled to drive in the fourth run of the inning. Verlander allowed a run, five hits and two walks, striking out three in six innings in sometimes rainy conditions. The three-time Cy Young Award winner's 13-game winless streak is the longest by a Giants starter since at least 1901. Before signing with San Francisco in January, Verlander's previous longest winless streak was seven starts. Christian Koss had two hits and Patrick Bailey doubled to drive in a run for the Giants, who have lost 11 of 16. Tauchman and Teel each had three hits for the AL-worst White Sox, who won for just the fifth time in 17 games. Cannon, who was reinstated from the injured list before the game, allowed a run in three innings. Willy Adames drew a four-pitch walk against Jordan Leasure with the bases loaded to give the Giants a 2-1 lead in the fifth. The Giants loaded the bases in the eighth. Vasil got a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and yelled as he walked off the mound. Verlander needs 38 wins to reach 300 in his career. Giants: RHP Logan Webb (7-5, 2.52 ERA) is set to start Monday's series opener at Arizona. RHP Ryne Nelson (4-2, 3.71) is scheduled to pitch for the Diamondbacks. White Sox: RHP Shane Smith (3-5, 3.38) will start Tuesday at the Los Angeles Dodgers opposite RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (7-6, 2.61). ___ AP MLB:

Cooper DeJean's exceptional athletic ability is becoming harder to overlook.

When the 2024 NFL Draft rolled around, and we began tossing around ideas about possible cornerback options, most thought Quinyon Mitchell would be long gone before the Philadelphia Eagles were on the clock in Round 1. What a surprise! He was still available at 22. Perhaps, sometimes, it's better to be fortunate than prepared. Cooper DeJean appeared to be a more realistic option for the first round, but there was some discussion about trading back to avoid 'reaching' in Round 1. No one expected him to still be available when the Eagles made their selection in Round 2. Fortunate fell on the prepared again. Howie Roseman traded up and got his guy. Fortune had again fallen on the well-prepared. DeJean and Mitchell were both finalists for the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. It was given to a friend of the Eagles' organization, Jared Verse, of the Los Angeles Rams. Philadelphia's future at cornerback looks bright thanks to these two. They are technicians who play like polished veterans five years their senior. Okay, let's take some inventory. We've seen Cooper DeJean bury Derrick Henry with one of the most sound tackles of the Eagles' 2024-25 season. He picked off Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl and returned it for six points. That one doubles as the first interception by an Eagles player on football's biggest stage. More importantly, he helped the Eagles blow the game open en route to an exhilarating and lopsided victory. DeJean can dunk. We learned that by watching some social media clips, we saw him throw down an alley-oop pass from Saquon Barkley. He was one of the attendees at the Fourth Annual DeVonta Smith Celebrity Softball All-Star game at Coca-Cola Park, and he's the event's home-run king after snatching the crown from last year's champion, former teammate Isaiah Rodgers. Who knew? Then again, maybe we should have. There seemingly isn't anything that he can't do athletically. Keep this in mind as we near 'Red October'. If the Phillies need another bat, we may have found one. This article originally appeared on Eagles Wire: Cooper DeJean keeps pushing boundaries with exceptional athleticism

Pirates continue to sizzle, erupt for season-high 12 runs in win over Mets

This article originally appeared on The temperatures in Pittsburgh over the weekend were hot. Maybe the cause was the Pirates' bats radiating heat for three straight days. The Pirates' offense continued to sizzle and set a season high in runs in their 12-1 win over the New York Mets at PNC Park on Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep. Advertisement The Pirates (35-50) erupted for five runs, all with two outs, off Mets starter Frankie Montas in the first inning. Ke'Bryan Hayes opened the scoring with a two-run single to center. Oneil Cruz followed with a two-run home run as the first of back-to-back home runs with Tommy Pham. Click here to read more from Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.
