Centre accepts minister's suggestions for makhana board development
Patna: Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has accepted the suggestions of Bihar industries minister Nitish Mishra regarding the development of Makhana board in the state.
Mishra on Wednesday shared Chouhan's reply to his letter on April 8, in which he had requested the agriculture and farmers welfare minister to include the industry-based framework (terms of reference) in the National Makhana Board.
"The Union agriculture minister has written a letter and informed me that the suggestions I have given are being included in the programs of the Makhana Board," Mishra stated.
Chouhan, through his letter, informed Mishra that the ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare has started the process of setting up the National Makhana Board to improve the production, processing, value addition and marketing of makhana as well as to provide training and assistance to makhana farmers after the Budget announcement 2025.
A meeting was held with makhana farmers and stakeholders at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Makhana Research Center, Darbhanga on February 23, 2025 on the establishment of the board, its objectives and the development programs to be undertaken by the board.
Mishra mentioned that makhana had global recognition as a super food. In December 2024, MoUs were signed for an investment proposal of Rs1,81,491 crore in the state at the Bihar Business Connect Investors Summit. The establishment of the makhana processing industry will make a significant contribution to the economy of agriculture-dominated Bihar, the Jhanjharpur MLA from Madhubani wrote to Chouhan.
"Along with self-reliance, it will also generate employment and investment opportunities on a large scale," Mishra said.

DPS parents plan Jantar Mantar protest over fee hike
New Delhi: Parents of students at Delhi Public School (DPS), Dwarka, plan to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar this Saturday in response to what they describe as an unauthorised fee hike and "persistent harassment of students", despite repeated govt orders to the contrary. The parents are demanding justice and accountability for their children's rights, asserting that though the directorate of education and govt issued directives over the years, no effective measures were implemented. They allege that affected students continue to be denied access to their classrooms. Delhi High Court recently ruled that students whose names were removed from the school rolls due to non-payment of the increased fees must be allowed to attend classes, provided they pay 50% of the additional fees from the academic year 2024-25. This ruling came following a petition filed by over 100 parents. "We are willing to comply with the court's order. However, the school's calculation of the 50% amount is significantly inflated. For example, if the fee due is Rs 10,000, they are demanding Rs 14,000," claimed Maheish Mishra, one of the parents. "Because of this discrepancy, we were unable to make payments and are considering legal action for contempt of court." Mishra said, "The upcoming protest has gathered support from 30 to 40 other schools and various activists who believe that children should not be subjected to such treatment. The school even employed bouncers to prevent students from entering, which is intimidating for adults, let alone children." The conflict began on May 9 when parents were notified via email that their children were removed from the school's rolls due to unpaid fees, following a fee hike imposed by the school. According to the parents' petition, the school resorted to coercive tactics over recent years to extract unauthorised fees, including stationing bouncers at the school's gates. The petition also accused the school of violating the terms of its land allotment and repeatedly disregarding DoE directives. One parent, whose son is in Class XI, expressed his frustration, saying, "Despite assurances from the authorities, our son's name was struck off by the school." Another parent reiterated the demand for a genuine audit, stating, "If a private school seeks to increase fees citing financial losses, it must first undergo a comprehensive forensic audit and an independent audit by CAG, covering both the institution and the organisation under which it operates. Burning fuel, intense heat left no chance to save anyone: Amit Shah
Gandhinagar: Union home minister Amit Shah , who rushed to Ahmedabad on hearing the news of the plane crash, said that the aircraft carried about 1.25 lakh litres of fuel, and the temperature had increased to an extent where there was no chance of saving lives. Stating that there was one survivor in the crash whom he met at the hospital, Shah said that authorities will provide the final death toll after conducting DNA sampling. He said that the aviation department began an investigation into the plane crash, and the Union civil aviation minister issued instructions to complete the inquiry at the earliest. Speaking to reporters after visiting the crash site and meeting the injured at the hospital, Shah condoled the death of the plane crash victims. "The death toll will be known after the DNA sampling is completed. Of the 242 persons on board the plane, there is one survivor. The plane had 1.25 lakh litres of fuel, and the temperature increased to such a level that there was no chance of saving lives. The state govt has done a commendable job in responding to the plane crash," Shah said. He said that all the bodies had been recovered from the crash site, and the task of collecting DNA samples is ongoing. The victims' relatives who are abroad have also been informed about the incident and their DNA samples will be collected as soon as they reach here. "About 1,000 DNA tests will have to be conducted. Gujarat has the facility for these tests. The mortal remains of victims will be handed over to relatives after DNA sampling," Shah said. Chief minister Bhupendra Patel, who was in Bardoli for an official function, rushed back to Ahmedabad after the air tragedy and supervised relief and rescue operations at the crash site. The CM also accompanied Union home minister Amit Shah to the crash site and the hospital where the injured are admitted. He directed the FSL and NFSU to expedite the process of collecting DNA samples as frantic relatives rushed to the Civil Hospital in search of their loved ones. Lauding the efforts of the agencies that participated in the rescue and relief operations, Amit Shah said, "Accidents cannot be prevented, but the administration's preparedness is tested during such times." He said that the entire country stands in solidarity with the family members of the victims. Shah said that the Union govt was informed within 10 minutes of the crash, and both the central and state govts launched a concerted relief and rescue operation.
