DPS parents plan Jantar Mantar protest over fee hike
New Delhi: Parents of students at Delhi Public School (DPS), Dwarka, plan to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar this Saturday in response to what they describe as an unauthorised fee hike and "persistent harassment of students", despite repeated govt orders to the contrary.
The parents are demanding justice and accountability for their children's rights, asserting that though the directorate of education and govt issued directives over the years, no effective measures were implemented. They allege that affected students continue to be denied access to their classrooms.
Delhi High Court recently ruled that students whose names were removed from the school rolls due to non-payment of the increased fees must be allowed to attend classes, provided they pay 50% of the additional fees from the academic year 2024-25.
This ruling came following a petition filed by over 100 parents.
"We are willing to comply with the court's order. However, the school's calculation of the 50% amount is significantly inflated. For example, if the fee due is Rs 10,000, they are demanding Rs 14,000," claimed Maheish Mishra, one of the parents. "Because of this discrepancy, we were unable to make payments and are considering legal action for contempt of court."
Mishra said, "The upcoming protest has gathered support from 30 to 40 other schools and various activists who believe that children should not be subjected to such treatment. The school even employed bouncers to prevent students from entering, which is intimidating for adults, let alone children."
The conflict began on May 9 when parents were notified via email that their children were removed from the school's rolls due to unpaid fees, following a fee hike imposed by the school.
According to the parents' petition, the school resorted to coercive tactics over recent years to extract unauthorised fees, including stationing bouncers at the school's gates. The petition also accused the school of violating the terms of its land allotment and repeatedly disregarding DoE directives.
One parent, whose son is in Class XI, expressed his frustration, saying, "Despite assurances from the authorities, our son's name was struck off by the school." Another parent reiterated the demand for a genuine audit, stating, "If a private school seeks to increase fees citing financial losses, it must first undergo a comprehensive forensic audit and an independent audit by CAG, covering both the institution and the organisation under which it operates.

The school authorities refused to comment on the issue.

A huge fireball followed the crash, damaging the hostel building. Several casualties were reported at the medical college, too. '1206' And Mr Rupani's Personal Connect The number '1206' stood for good fortune for Mr Rupani, who used it on his car, scooter and official number plate of his vehicle as Chief Minister. He considered it lucky for him until it wasn't. The former Chief Minister died on June 12 (12/06) in the crash. 12/06, according to friends, family, and party colleagues, was a personal emblem for Mr Rupani. Vijay Rupani's Political Life Mr Rupani served as Gujarat's 16th Chief Minister from August 2016 to September 2021. Born in Rangoon (now Yangon), Burma, in 1956, his family migrated to Rajkot in the 1960s following political instability in Southeast Asia. He began his political career as a student activist and became a municipal corporator in Rajkot in 1987. Over the next three decades, he held a range of administrative and legislative roles, including as minister for transport, water supply, and labour. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012. In 2014, he was appointed as a minister in the Gujarat government, where he served till 2016, followed by taking over as the Chief Minister in the same year, a position he held till 2021 before resigning ahead of the assembly elections as part of the BJP's leadership reset. Mr Rupani remained active in organisational affairs. He held a senior advisory role within the party's Gujarat unit and was frequently consulted on matters related to state policy and elections.

'Thought it was an earthquake': Eyewitnesses recount horrific Ahmedabad plane crash; say sky was filled with black smoke
NEW DELHI: Mohan Bahadur Kshatriya, an eyewitness to the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, recounted scenes of devastation and chaos on Saturday as he joined rescue efforts just minutes after the aircraft went down on Thursday. Living just 500 meters from the crash site, Kshatriya said he initially mistook the deafening explosion for an earthquake. 'I heard a loud bang and thought it was a storm or an earthquake,' he said. 'When I stepped out, there was smoke and fire everywhere. People were shouting that a plane had crashed. We ran toward the mess where students were screaming for help.' He worked alongside Army personnel to rescue five severely injured students from the wreckage. He added, 'They were in extremely serious condition. Then we searched further and found a body in terrible shape, trapped under the debris,' he added. Another eyewitness, Rekha Kshatriya, described the moment the aircraft hit as unlike anything they had ever experienced before, even in a neighborhood accustomed to loud noise. 'Rs 2.6cr in profits, just pay tax': Naval Dockyard staffer duped of Rs 1.09 crore in WhatsApp share trading scam
A Naval Dockyard employee from Thane lost ₹1.09 crore to cyber fraudsters through a deceptive share trading scheme initiated on WhatsApp. Lured by promises of high returns, the victim invested in fake platforms, witnessing inflated profits. THANE: A Naval Dockyard staffer lost over ₹1.09 crore to cyber fraudsters who lured him into a fake share trading scheme through WhatsApp groups. The police said that the 45-year-old victim, a resident of Diva (East), was added to multiple WhatsApp groups by unknown numbers promising high returns through share market investments. The scammers created elaborate fake trading platforms and showed inflated profits of ₹2.64 crore in his account to gain his confidence. The fraud began when the complainant started receiving promotional messages on WhatsApp about lucrative share trading opportunities. "He was gradually added to several groups where other members appeared to be making huge profits," said a police officer from Mumbra station. The victim was then provided with web links to open trading accounts and asked to transfer money to various bank accounts over several months. "The fraudsters created fake dashboards showing his investments grew to over ₹2.64 crore. When he tried to withdraw money, a group administrator named 'Shruti' demanded additional payments for taxes and commission," the officer added. Despite making these additional payments, no funds were credited to his account. The complainant grew suspicious when the scammers kept demanding more money under various pretexts and stopped responding to his queries. "After waiting for over a week without receiving any money and facing new excuses daily, he realised he was cheated," police said. The victim has now filed a complaint with Mumbra police and the cyber crime portal, providing mobile numbers, fake account links, and bank account details used by the fraudsters. "This appears to be a well-organised racket using WhatsApp to target victims with fake trading platforms. We are tracing the digital footprints and bank accounts used in the fraud," said the investigating officer. Police have advised citizens to be wary of unsolicited investment offers on social media platforms and to verify the credentials of trading platforms before investing money.
