How NIIT university's industry-linked model creates next-gen professionals
Recent trends highlight this shift:
Workplaces increasingly demand real-world experience: According to the India Skills Report and industry insights from NASSCOM and FICCI-EY, internship experience and hands-on training are now among the top criteria for employability.1 In response, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and UGC have mandated internships as part of several technical and management programs.2
Students and parents are outcome-focused. Today's aspirants aren't just choosing degrees—they're evaluating career ROI. Factors such as placement rates, industry collaborations, research exposure, and global readiness significantly influence decision-making. The rising participation in national competitions like the Smart India Hackathon and the growth of innovation-linked programs further reflect this shift.3
Interdisciplinary and custom learning is in demand. With the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 pushing for flexible, multidisciplinary education, students now expect curricula that allow choice, exploration, and self-paced academic development. Increasing enrolments in programs offering electives, project-based credits, and personalisation speak to this evolving preference.4
What modern learners need today
A new generation of students – and their families – is seeking more than just degrees—they want institutions that combine academic rigour with industry insight. They look for outcomes: from exposure to cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary projects to strong placement networks and a stimulating campus culture. Forward-thinking universities are responding to this with hybrid models of learning that bring academia and industry together on the same page. What sets them apart is their ability to build education ecosystems where learning is immersive, industry-aligned, and innovation-led.
A case in point: NIIT University with 15 years of rich academic innovation
Celebrating 15 years of academic innovation, one institution that has seamlessly embedded this model is
NIIT University (NU)
. Here, the classroom extends into industry offices, capstone labs, online learning platforms, and centres of excellence.
NU's founding ethos rests on four core principles—industry-linked, technology-based, research-driven, and seamless. These guide every part of the university's operations—from its balanced academic structure to the very culture on campus.
Industry isn't an afterthought—it's at the core
At NU, industry functions as a co-educator, co-designer, and co-assessor. NIIT University (NU) has pioneered an industry-integrated learning model. With over 700 active partnerships with industry leaders (including marquee names like Morgan Stanley, Gartner, Amazon, EY) students receive real-world experience through:
Industry Practice (IP): with up to a 12-month internship providing hands-on learning embedded into the curriculum leading to excellent placements.
Customised electives and specialisations co-created with industry leaders with relevant courses taught by the industry personnel themselves.
A unique pedagogy called the Additive Curriculum that promotes self-directed and collaborative learning through interdisciplinary projects spanning multiple courses through research and discovery, with industry participating as mentors
Industry faculty who teach full-term courses
Advisory Boards and Centres of Excellence housed within the campus
The result: NU students are trained not just to qualify for jobs, but to thrive in them from Day 1.
Learning by doing— beyond the classroom
A standout element of NU's academic journey is the Capstone Project—a credit-bearing, integrative initiative where students solve real-world problems through innovation. Introduced in the early academic structure of NU, it is a compulsory project undertaken by all students. Deeply integrative, this assignment brings together multiple disciplines, allowing students to apply the knowledge and skills they've accumulated over the years. From building AI-based diagnostic tools and assistive technology for the differently-abled to IoT-based smart systems, they are mentored through this stage to apply knowledge meaningfully.
A culture of research and competition
NIIT University
places high value on curiosity. Students participate (and win) in national and global hackathons—Smart India Hackathon, Megathon at IIT Hyderabad, and more. Research isn't an isolated academic checkbox but a key pillar—with every student at NIIT University, undertaking a real research project as part of curricular studies leading to contributing to patents and working alongside faculty in areas like cybersecurity and green energy. One team in particular worked on using AI to create fashion designs, and another student co-developed a toll management system.
An ecosystem that nurtures transformation since inception
A serene, green campus, spanning 100 acres, NU is not just about academic development—it's about shaping confident individuals. Nearly a third of NU's curriculum is customisable, allowing students to explore their interests deeply. With a
100% placement track record
since inception for students who eligible and opted for placements from NU and lucrative salary packages for eligible students, NU stands out as a space where potential meets opportunity and preparedness..

India's education system transformed in last few years: Min
1 2 Berhampur: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday said the country's higher education ecosystem has transformed a lot in the last few years, and India has become the favourite destination of global educational institutions. While several global institutes have opened their campuses in the country, others are in the pipeline. Some of our institutes also opened their campuses in foreign countries. IIM Ahmedabad will soon open its campus in Dubai, said Pradhan, while addressing the convocation at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur. Highlighting the growth of education in the country, he said the total enrolment of students touched around 4.46 crore in 2022-23, a 30% increase since 2014-15. The female enrolment during the period grew by around 38 to 40%. "This indicates the govt's commitment towards inclusive education," he said. The govt implemented the New Education Policy-2020, keeping an eye on achieving India as a developed nation by 2047—the Viksit Bharat, call of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Urging the students to become "job creators and not be job-seekers," he said they should be involved in innovation. Addressing the convocation of Berhampur University earlier, he urged the students to work hard to achieve the Viksit Odisha and Viksit Bharat in 2036 and 2047, respectively, as called by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Bharat number one in economics in the world. Odisha will celebrate its centenary of statehood in the next 11 years, while the country celebrates its centenary of achievement of freedom in 2047. The young students should play a key role in achieving the Viksit Odisha and Viksit Bharat in the next 11 and 22 years, said Pradhan. University is not an institute to teach, but it should be involved in research and evolve innovations, he said. Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati addressed the convocations of both the institutes and highlighted the growth of the education ecosystem of the country in the last few years, which makes it flexible and innovation-driven. Ashok Kumar Ganguli, director, IISER Berhampur, highlighted the achievements of the institute. In the convocation, 136 BS-MS, one MS degree, and 22 PhD students received their degrees. The governor inaugurated the state-of-the-art "central advanced instrumentation facility" on the IISER campus. Berhampur University awarded honorary to Ajit Kumar Mohanty, secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Tessy Thomas, former Director General, Aeronautical Systems, DRDO and known as the "Missile Woman of India," and Raimati Ghiuria, seed custodian, well known as Millet Queen. Bridge gap between environment and business, innovator Sonam Wangchuk urges Bengal youth
Kolkata: Embrace entrepreneurship as a tool to solve real-world problems rather than focusing solely on profit-making: This plea for commitment to sustainable impact came from innovator, educator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk . The Ladakh-based change-maker was recently in the city to attend 'Made in JIS 2025', organised by the JIS Group. "India needs problem-solvers more than business entrepreneurs who do business just for the sake of making money," Wangchuk told the gathering of students and aspiring innovators. "Curiosity of the mind, empathy of the heart and the spirit of initiative are key to becoming an entrepreneur with conscience — one who can bridge the gap between environment and business. " Founder of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) and architect of Operation New Hope, Wangchuk shared examples of student-led innovations in Ladakh, including Passive Solar Heating Shelters for the Indian Army at 15,000-ft altitude and artificial glaciers or 'ice stupas' to tackle pre-monsoon water scarcity. He pointed out that ventures, such as an all-woman travel company and yak-cheese production, had emerged from "simple textbook science", treated with creativity. "Just like different diseases are treated with different medicines, different circumstances need different ways of education," he said, praising the National Education Policy for its philosophy but pointing out that its effective implementation remained a challenge. Describing Wangchuk's presence as "deeply humbling and transformative", JIS Group director Jaspreet Kaur said the initiative aimed at building a generation of socially-conscious innovators. The event also featured sessions with Faad Capital CEO Aditya Arora and Snap-E Cabs founder & CEO Mayank Bindal. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
