REWARDS SHAKE-UP
Starbucks made a big change to its rewards scheme back in January.
The updated programme promised that customers would be able to earn free drinks more quickly, but they would need to spend more to qualify for other perks.
Additionally, while freebies became easier to obtain, achieving "gold" membership status became more challenging.
When announcing the changes, Starbucks said: "We will be switching up your Stars from 3 per £1 to 10 per £1!
"We're updating the Starbucks Rewards program in the new year.
"Introducing new products and tiers for Star redemption and refining Gold Level status, including amending the Gold Level threshold to 2500 Stars.
"Meanwhile, your Star value, credit, any free drinks and Reward status remain the same throughout the update."
The company also reassured customers that Stars would still be redeemable for up to two years and could now be used across a wider range of items.
Five things you didn't know about Starbucks
The name was inspired by a book
Co-founders Gordon Bowker, Jerry Baldwin, and Zev Siegl opened the first Starbucks in Seattle on March 30, 1971. The name was inspired by author Herman Melville's famous novel, Moby-Dick - Starbuck was the name of the first mate on the ship, the Pequod.
It has its own coffee farm
Purchased in 2013, Hacienda Alsacia is a 240-hectare coffee farm located in Costa Rica. Customers can't visit, but they can take a virtual tour.
Different apron colours
Did you ever notice some of the Starbucks staff wearing different colour aprons? Green, Black, Red and there's also a few special editions.
Before there were Sharpie pens
Starbucks is known for writing your name on your drink cup, but before this idea came to fruition, the position of a cup on the bar would tell the barista how to make the beverage. Upside down for decaf!
Millions of fans, millions of drinks
US Starbucks stores will sell around 5 million drinks daily in 2024, and the top-selling of which is currently Caramel Macchiato.

Fife Planning Ahead: Starbucks approval and fresh Levenmouth rail bridge plan

New plans have been approved for a Rosyth memorial to a heroic wartime submarine crew. Sculptures and a garden will be created for ORP Orzel, which arrived at the dockyard in 1939 after escaping internment in Estonia. It carried out missions with the Royal Navy until it was lost at sea in 1940, with the loss of 63 lives. The memorial, between Castle Road and Ferry Toll Road, will tell the story of the meeting of ORP Orzel and HMS Victorious at the start of the Second World War. A former Kirkcaldy gin and cocktail bar will be transformed into a bridal shop. Planners have approved an application by Grande Dreams for the building last known as The Candy Bar. Grande Dreams has been operating at Mitchelston Drive since 2019, offering a range of products. Plans to convert a Kincardine pub into a house have been given the go-ahead. The Auld Hoose owner says the the smoking ban, a reduction in the drink drive limit and then covid lockdowns have affected custom. According to planning papers, the 'financial affordability of the pub has been stressed'. And conversion of the B-listed building would prevent it becoming derelict in future. The landlord describes the proposal as 'a back-up plan' should the pub become unviable. Plans for two-drive thru restaurants, including a Starbucks, have been approved for Dalgety Bay. The American coffee giant will be built on a vacant site at Hillend Industrial Estate, off Ridge Way. Developers are still in talks with companies over who will occupy the second building. However, the application was made by the Adil Group, which operates dozens of KFCs, Burger Kings, Costa Coffees and Taco Bells across the UK. Cardenden could be in line for hundreds of new homes. Miller Homes has submitted a planning of application notice (PAN) for a residential and commercial development west of North Dundonald Farm. Public exhibitions at Bowhill Community Centre on June 25 and August 20 will reveal more details. A previous application, later withdrawn, mooted 173 houses and 66 flats on the site. Fresh plans for an active travel bridge over the new Levenmouth rail link have been approved. A bridge between Aldi in Mountleurie, Leven, and Steelworks Brae in Methil, was originally approved in February last year. However, Network Rail then submitted amended designs. The 102-metre-long bridge is for walking, wheeling and cycling and will cross both the railway and the River Leven. It is hoped it will be open by spring 2026. Dalgety Bay Starbucks drive-thru plans approved

Plans for two-drive thru restaurants, including a Starbucks, have been approved for Dalgety Bay. The American coffee giant will open in a vacant site at Hillend Industrial Estate, off Ridge Way. Developers are still in talks with companies over who will occupy the second building. However, it will likely be another fast food-style restaurant. The application was made by the Adil Group, which operates dozens of KFCs, Burger Kings, Costa Coffees and Taco Bells across the UK. Adil describes itself as 'growth-hungry' and has acquired the rights to develop the Taco Bell brand throughout Scotland. It says opening at the Dalgety Bay site will improve the choice of leisure facilities for residents. And it could bring up to 50 jobs. The two drive-thrus will occupy undeveloped ground in the partially-completed development known as The Gateway. It is close to Dalgety Bay Asda, as well as Subway, Domino's and Greggs. The Starbucks building is set to measure more than 2,000 square feet, with the second restaurant next door, even bigger. Adil describes the one-storey buildings as being of a modern design. And it says they will complement existing businesses. Fife Council planning officer Lauren McNeil said some concerns were expressed about the principle of the development. In particular, people were worried about over-provision and the potential impact on businesses. Extra traffic and road safety were also raised as concerns. However, Ms McNeil believes the development will not have a significant impact.

Starbucks removes a major perk for rewards members

Starbucks Rewards members are fuming after learning they'll no longer earn 25 stars for using personal cups . Instead, the coffee giant will offer double stars on the full order — a change many say is a downgrade. Outraged customers took to Reddit, saying the switch will slash their rewards. 'It's like Starbucks doesn't want customers anymore,' one user wrote. Some vowed to stop visiting entirely. 'This was my last reason to go daily,' one fan said. 'Guess I'll be making coffee at home now.' Another added: 'Without this, I'd rather go somewhere else — they don't even have new drinks anymore.' This change, which starts on June 24, benefits those making larger purchases, as higher spenders will collect more stars under the new system. For example, a $30 order will yield 60 Stars instead of the previous 55, whereas a $5 purchase will drop from 30 to just 10 Stars. Stars earn freebies. For example, 25 gets a shot, 100 a brewed coffee or a bakery item, 200 a latter and 300 a sandwich. The 25-star bonus has been a fan-favorite Starbucks perk since 2022. Several Reddit users revealed they were some of the many customers who used the perk daily to score a free coffee, tea, or snack when reaching the 100 point redemption level. A few Reddit users were 'unsurprised' by the action since CEO Brian Niccol revealed that reducing discounts and promotions for loyalty members for part of the company's 'Back to Starbucks' plan. Loyalty members will still earn one star per dollar spent when paying at the register or through a payment method on the app. If they pay through money on a digital Starbucks card or gift card, they will earn two. The company will continue to give its loyalty members a $0.10 discount on their orders when they use personal cups. However, the perk removal is one of many Starbucks changes that fans have slammed online. Employees and customers were frustrated by the return of its writing on cups policy , which baristas claimed couldn't include popular terms like 'YOLO' and 'GOAT .' Workers also roasted Niccol for implementing a new dress code, many of which threatened to quit their jobs . While many changes were controversial, there were some that left customers impressed. The chain stopped charging customers extra money for dairy alternatives shortly after announcing it would simplify its ' overly complex menu .' All the changes have made customers fear for the fate of the chain . Its profits have declined drastically over the last few years, which was a factor in its decision to hire Niccol as CEO . They have yet to get back on track, and Starbucks recently confirmed its global and North American comparable store sales each declined by 1 percent during its latest quarter. However, the net revenue for its North American sales increased by 1 percent, and Niccol is still confident the turnaround plan is the 'right strategy' to better the company. has reached out to Starbucks for comment regarding the removal of the perk.
