Israel deports Swedish activist Greta Thunberg after Gaza-bound aid boat intercepted

Hans India10-06-2025
Jerusalem: Israel deported Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg on Tuesday, a day after she and 11 other activists were detained by Israeli forces while attempting to breach the naval blockade on the Gaza Strip aboard an aid boat.
"Greta Thunberg just departed Israel on a flight to Sweden (via France)," the Israeli Foreign Ministry wrote on social media platform X. The ministry released two photos of her, one boarding the plane with her hands behind her back and another seated inside.
State broadcaster Kan reported that Thunberg, 22, and other activists were taken to Ben Gurion Airport for deportation. According to the report, Thunberg was seated "in a back seat without the ability to recline."
Israeli Interior Minister Moshe Arbel confirmed several activists were taken to the airport for deportation, and said he had "instructed that all 12 participants in the flotilla be returned to their countries of origin."
"Israel will not allow its sovereignty to be harmed through protest flotilla provocations at its borders," Arbel said in a statement.
The Foreign Ministry said activists who agreed to sign documents stating they voluntarily agree to leave Israel were expected to leave the country by flights on Tuesday. Those who refused would be brought before a judicial authority to authorise their deportation, according to the ministry.
Consular officials from the activists' home countries met them at the airport, the ministry said.
Adalah, an Israel-based legal rights group representing the activists, said four agreed to immediate repatriation, while the remaining eight are contesting their deportation orders. They would be held in a detention center pending a court hearing. The timing of the hearing was not immediately clear.
According to Adalah, after the Israeli forces seized the boat Madleen early on Monday, the people on board were held at sea for hours before being brought to Ashdod port after nightfall.
Israel intercepted the charity vessel in international waters and escorted it to Ashdod, the largest port in Israel, a move the Freedom Flotilla Coalition described as illegal and called a "kidnapping." The vessel was reportedly carrying humanitarian supplies, including food and medicine, intended for Gaza.
The incident came about a month after another flotilla vessel, Conscience, was damaged in an alleged drone strike in international waters near Malta, Xinhua news agency reported.
Israel imposed a naval blockade on Gaza in 2007 after Hamas took control of the enclave. Restrictions were further tightened following Hamas's cross-border attack in October 2023.
The Israeli offensive has devastated Gaza's infrastructure and pushed its more than 2 million residents into a deep humanitarian crisis. UN agencies warn of an impending famine, with the entire population facing acute food insecurity.Israel deports Swedish activist Greta Thunberg after Gaza-bound aid boat intercepted

Muslim Countries Must Unite: Turkey Slams Israel's Gaza Move

Muslim nations must act in unison and rally international opposition against Israel's plan to take control of Gaza City, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Saturday after talks in Egypt. Regional powers Egypt and Turkey both condemned the plan on Friday. Ankara has said it marked a new phase in what it called Israel's genocidal and expansionist policies, while calling for global measures to stop the plan's implementation. Israel rejects such description of its actions in Gaza. Speaking at a joint press conference in El Alamein with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty, after also meeting Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Fidan said the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation had been called to an emergency meeting. Fidan said Israel's policy aimed to force Palestinians out of their lands through hunger and that it aimed to permanently invade Gaza, adding there was no justifiable excuse for nations to continue supporting Israel. Israel denies having a policy of starvation in Gaza, and says Palestinian militant group Hamas, which killed 1,200 people in its October 2023 attack, could end the war by surrendering. "What is happening today is a very dangerous development... not only for the Palestinian people or neighbouring countries," Abdelatty said, adding that Israel's plans were "inadmissible". Abdelatty said there was full coordination with Turkey on Gaza, and referred to a statement issued on Saturday by the OIC Ministerial Committee condemning Israel's plan. The OIC committee said Israel's plan marked "a dangerous and unacceptable escalation, a flagrant violation of international law, and an attempt to entrench the illegal occupation", warning that it would "obliterate any opportunity for peace". Mediating teams from Egypt, Qatar and the United States have been working for months to reach a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The OIC urged world powers and the United Nations Security Council to "assume their legal and humanitarian responsibilities and to take urgent action to stop" Israel's Gaza City plan, while ensuring immediate accountability for what it called Israeli violations of international law.

‘New crime': Palestinian Authority on Israel's escalation plan in Gaza

The Palestinian Authority on Saturday lambasted the Israeli government's decision to expand its military operations in Gaza, with President Mahmud Abbas calling the plan a "new crime" and demanding his organisation take responsibility for the territory. Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas emphasised "the importance of enabling the State of Palestine to assume its full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip,(AFP) Early Friday, the Israeli security cabinet approved plans for a major operation to seize Gaza City, triggering a wave of criticism from across the globe. In the same meeting, it also adopted a set of principles for concluding the war in Gaza, including demilitarising the territory and establishing a new "administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority" (PA). According a statement carried by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, PA leader Abbas said the plan "constitutes a new crime", and stressed "the urgent need to take action to stop it immediately". He also emphasised "the importance of enabling the State of Palestine to assume its full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip, and the need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages and detainees, and the entry of humanitarian assistance". The PA -- conceived as a first step towards a Palestinian state -- exercises limited administration over parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The territory is home to about three million Palestinians. Excluding Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, it is also home to around half a million Israelis living in settlements considered illegal under international law. The PA, however, does not have a presence in Gaza, which has been governed by Hamas for nearly two decades. Despite the backlash and rumours of dissent from Israeli top brass, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remained defiant over the decision. In a post on social media late Friday, Netanyahu said "we are not going to occupy Gaza -- we are going to free Gaza from Hamas". The prime minister faces mounting pressure to secure a ceasefire to bring Gaza's more than two million people back from the brink of famine and free the hostages held by Palestinian militants. A statement issued on Saturday by the foreign ministers of Italy, Australia, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom took aim at the decision to occupy Gaza City. "This will exacerbate the catastrophic humanitarian situation, endanger the lives of hostages, and increase the risk of a mass exodus of civilians," they said. As supporters of the hostages again demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Saturday, Israeli campaign group the Hostages and Missing Families Forum put out a statement condemning the government's war plans. "Expanding the fighting endangers the hostages and the soldiers - the people of Israel are not willing to risk them," it said. Palestinian presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said the new plan was "an unprecedented challenge and provocation to the international will to achieve peace and stability". Israel's offensive has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, according to Hamas-run Gaza's health ministry, figures the United Nations says are reliable. Hamas's 2023 attack on Israel -- which triggered the war -- resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
