BMI maintains positive outlook for consumer spending in Malaysia over 2025, 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: BMI, a Fitch solutions company, has maintained its broadly positive outlook for consumer spending in Malaysia over 2025, with the country's healthy macroeconomic outlook driving real terms growth in household incomes.
With inflation averaging lower than expected in May, BMI lowered its forecast for headline inflation to an average of 1.9 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in 2025, down from 2.1 per cent previously, and only slightly up from an average of 1.8 per cent in 2024.
It noted this remained low enough to support household purchasing power.
Overall, the firm forecasted household spending to grow by 3.8 per cent y-o-y over 2025, in real terms, to a value of RM930.7 billion, up from RM896.9 billion in 2024.
"As a result, household spending has returned close to pre-COVID levels of growth, where it grew at a real average rate of 5.2 per cent y-o-y during the 2015-2019 period.
"However, spending will continue to be restrained by Malaysian consumers' high levels of indebtedness and the correspondingly high debt servicing costs," it said in its latest "Malaysia Consumer Outlook: Strong Growth Forecast Over 2025 and 2026".
Looking ahead to 2026, BMI expected consumer spending to accelerate, underpinned by strong gross domestic product growth and a stable employment outlook.
It said consumer confidence and willingness to spend would be further supported by a stable inflationary environment and the Bank Negara Malaysia returning to a loosening mode, cutting its benchmark interest rate by a further 25 basis points from a forecast of 2.75 per cent in December 2025 to 2.50 per cent by end-2026.
"Across the year, therefore, we forecast total household spending growth in Malaysia of 5.0 per cent y-o-y in real terms, taking spending to RM977.3 billion," it said.
BMI said that over the 2025-2029 forecast period, solid household incomes and tourism-related retail sales would further support a steady uptick in spending.

(EPA Images pic) LONDON : The sharp increase in US trade tariffs on the EU will not trigger immediate sovereign rating cuts, but could compound existing pressures, Fitch and other agencies said today, while Moody's warned of the effect on exporting firms. One of Fitch's top sovereign analysts, Ed Parker, said the US' baseline tariff of 15% on imports from the EU was in line with assumptions the rating agency has had since March and therefore did not materially shift its economic forecasts. 'Nevertheless, the 15% rate is a huge increase relative to the 1.2% rate of last year,' he said. 'We don't expect the increase in the tariff rate to directly drive EU rating changes on its own, but it could compound existing credit pressures,' Parker told Reuters. Smaller European-based agency Scope Ratings and Morningstar DBRS echoed the view, with Scope's head of sovereign ratings, Alvise Lennkh-Yunus, saying the tariffs arrived 'against a backdrop of accumulating economic shocks'. At a sector level, Moody's warned that 'the credit effects will be significant' for companies that export a lot to the US, depend on complex global supply chains and have limited pricing power in their markets. That includes carmakers like Stellantis and Volkswagen, whose ratings Moody's recently downgraded. Large diversified European manufacturing companies like Siemens and ABB generate about 25% of their revenue in the US. However, they tend to follow local-for-local strategies, sourcing at least 80% of their procurement within the US and should be able to pass at least some of the tariff increases on to customers. Uncertainty still remains about key goods such as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. The pharmaceutical sector amounts to 25% of all EU exports to the US, analysts estimate. The exemption of aircraft components meanwhile eases expected tariff-related pressures for Airbus and MTU Aero Engines, 'which reinforces our already positive outlook for the global aerospace and defence sector,' Moody's said. It also said the 15% rate had been broadly in line with expectations it laid out when it cut its euro zone economic growth forecast for the year to below 1% in May. It did not give an EU-wide sovereign view, although it said Ireland, which it rates at Aa3 and has a 'positive' outlook on, was most exposed with total value-added exports to the US accounting for around 8% of its GDP back in 2020.

The Malaysia-China Tech & Trade Cooperation Exchange Conference 2025, held in Sheraton Petaling Jaya today, underscored the nation's ambitions to become a regional hub for next-generation technologies while deepening bilateral ties with China. The initiative will introduce Tencent Cloud's advanced AI and cloud solutions to the Malaysian market through Ramssol's subsidiary, Rams Solutions, targeting retail and service industries seeking to automate operations, enhance customer engagement and adopt data-driven strategies for greater competitiveness across Asean markets. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, who officiated the event, said Malaysia's leadership as Asean Chair in 2025 positioned it uniquely to drive regional innovation and stability. Teo also outlined ongoing initiatives under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, including technical standards by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure communications equipment and services meet safety, interoperability and reliability benchmarks. Malaysia's broader digital push includes the Online Safety Act 2025, which mandates platforms to curb harmful content such as scams, cyberbullying and child exploitation, while maintaining innovation and free expression. She cited campaigns like Kempen Internet Selamat reaching over 43,000 participants in 348 schools and cashless adoption drives at Nadi Centres benefiting 1.8 million users as examples of initiatives fostering safer and more inclusive digital participation. Broadband penetration currently stands at 130.8% for mobile and 48.4% for fixed lines. Ramssol Group chairman Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah said the collaboration reflects the group's long-term strategy to position Malaysia as a bridge for cross-border technology exchange and innovation in Asean. 'These collaborative events are more than just knowledge-sharing platforms; they are strategic gateways to future growth,' he said. 'By aligning Malaysia's digital ambitions with China's tech expertise, we are paving the way for sustained innovation, enhanced bilateral trade and scalable transformation across Asean.' The conference also showcased Tencent Cloud's real-time communication platforms, unmanned retail solutions, automated parking systems and intelligent media processing tools, technologies that have transformed consumer experiences in China and are now being introduced to Malaysian enterprises. Equinix's participation ensures scalable, secure digital infrastructure for cross-border solutions, with analysts noting robust infrastructure as vital for seamless technology integration. Teo described the initiative as a model for international cooperation where the Malaysia–China relationship continues to stand as a model where innovation drives value and collaboration leads to mutual prosperity. 'Let us move forward with confidence and a shared commitment to shaping a better, smarter future for Asia through innovation and cooperation,' she said.
