Astro focuses on attracting new customers
PETALING JAYA: Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd will be focusing on attracting new customers, accelerating adjacent businesses and reducing its costs.
Group chief executive officer Euan Smith (pic) remains optimistic that the pay-TV operator's video customer base will stabilise in the near future, underpinned by better product value propositions that cater to a wider range of customers.
This, he added, will also be supported by the growing share of local content in its customers' viewing time.
'Financial year 2025 (ended Jan 31, 2025) (FY25) saw the highest growth of new Chinese subscribers in the last four years and an increased return of lapsed customers.
'Ongoing efforts to acquire customers in relatively untapped suburban areas and newer townships such as Sekinchan and Pandamaran (Selangor) have also contributed significantly to the general upwards trend,' Smith said in the company's annual report.
He added that the group's production expertise and strong integration with the Malaysian creative ecosystem fuels the company's ability to deliver successful shows at scale, whether that be live signatures, Astro Originals, dramas, local sports, news, or children's content.
'Our new formats and captivating content increasingly include 360-degree engagement that goes well beyond the screen, to radio, to ground events, and into the vibrant social media and digital space.'
Separately, Smith said Astro's adjacent businesses continue to show momentum.
'Enterprise, Astro Fibre broadband, addressable advertising and Sooka are each unlocking significant opportunities to meet a wider range of customer needs.'
Having grown these businesses in FY25, Smith said the focus is now on increasing Astro's execution cadence for each of these business lines.
'Additionally, our ability to execute unified campaigns across all platforms and leverage Astro's extensive talent roster positions us uniquely to engage the entire Malaysian audience across TV, radio, digital, and at on-ground activations.
'Brands continue to trust us to deliver high-impact, targeted solutions.'
In an era of intense competition and deep discounting, Smith said Astro is experimenting with novel and innovative approaches to differentiate its advertising expenditure offering.
'This includes repurposing scenes from our shows and movies into advertisements, a strategy that has encouraged investments and sponsorships from leading consumer brands, including for our movie titles (such as The Experts and Keluang Man).'
Additionally, Smith said efforts around cost continue, with the group's overall cost base down by circa 8% in FY25 despite parallel investments to acquire new customers and grow new businesses.
'In particular, proactive measures to reduce legacy costs are helping ensure that our offerings remain competitive in the face of increasing pressure from over-the-top platforms and piracy.'
Smith emphasised that major cost savings in the year included lower employee costs resulting from the headcount reduction achieved post the FY24 voluntary separation scheme.
'Our cost to serve dropped significantly as a result of our customer relationship management system re-platforming, other technology initiatives, and the mid-year retirement of the M3a satellite.
'Advancements in compression technology and delivery of more content via On Demand have allowed us to reduce transponder capacity and its associated costs.'

Vietnam's petrol bike bans set stage for major market shake-up
With nearly 80 million motorbikes registered nationwide, the race is on to determine which companies will benefit most from Vietnam's electrification drive. — Vietnam News HANOI: Hanoi announces plans to ban petrol-powered motorbikes within Ring Road 1 starting July 1, 2026, while Ho Chi Minh City (HCM City) aims to phase out 400,000 petrol-powered ride-hailing bikes from early 2026. With nearly 80 million motorbikes registered nationwide, the race is on to determine which companies will benefit most from Vietnam's electrification drive. On the ground, electric motorbikes are already widely available. In HCM City, a shop on Vo Thi Sau Street offers models priced between 18 million dong to 25 million dong, excluding a three-million-dong registration fee. Buyers can choose between lead-acid batteries, common in entry-level bikes and lithium batteries, which are preferred in higher-end models. The segment's roots trace back to 2013, with Chinese brands like Yadea and Dibao. Before VinFast entered the market in 2018 with its Klara scooter, most models were low-powered and slow, requiring no license, and the market was tiny compared to petrol bikes. By 2020, VinFast led the market with a 43.4% share, far ahead of Pega (15.7%), Dibao (11.8%), Yadea (8.6%) and Anbico (8.3%), according to the HCM City Institute for Development Studies (HIDS). With Vietnam now home to 77 million registered motorbikes, 770 for every 1,000 people, the potential for growth is enormous. Government policies are accelerating production and adoption, and industry competition is already fierce. Experts said consumer priorities will ultimately determine the winners. Dr Nguyen Son of RMIT University Vietnam noted that price, quality and design drive sales more than policy. 'Vietnam's electric vehicle (EV) boom could attract large-scale investment in smart vehicle systems, advanced batteries and support services.' he said. Honda Vietnam has contacted HIDS to learn more about the city's roadmap. The company is exploring mass production of electric motorbikes and has begun testing demand by offering rentals at 1.47 million dong (US$57) per month. Another Japanese manufacturer, Yamaha, introduced its NEO's scooter to Vietnam in late 2022, the first Asian market to receive the model, signalling strategic interest. Former National Assembly Economic Committee member Nguyen Ngoc Bao said domestic players like VinFast currently enjoy an edge, thanks to sales strategies and charging networks. However, with Vietnam's open economy and green transport targets, powerful foreign brands like Honda and Yamaha are likely to compete strongly. He rejected the notion that current policies favour any one firm, pointing out that restrictions on polluting two-wheelers have been discussed for over 20 years, long before VinFast entered the market. Only now, with incomes nearing US$5,000 per capita and infrastructure in place, is the country ready to support meaningful change. If anything, Honda and Yamaha have had ample time to adjust their production lines, given their established market positions and capital. According to MotorCycles Data, Vietnam's two-wheeler market grew 19% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, reaching 1.6 million units. Honda and Yamaha saw sales rise by 6.2% and 20% respectively, while VinFast's electric motorbike sales surged 501%, maintaining its lead in the rapidly expanding segment. Yadea followed with 37.5% growth, ahead of Dibao, Pega, and others. — Viet Nam News/ANN

Genting Plantations JV to have little early impact
BIMB Research described the capital commitment as 'sizeable' and therefore, execution risks exist. PETALING JAYA: Genting Plantations Bhd 's proposed venture into the vegetable-seeds business by partnering with a China firm is expected to have limited impact on near-term profits, owing to likely high upfront costs. Research houses such as BIMB Research and CIMB Research are 'neutral' on the venture. 'We expect contributions to come no earlier than financial year 2027 (FY27) as operations scale up,' BIMB Research said. Meanwhile, CIMB Research said: 'We believe the project is unlikely to be earnings-accretive in the near term given the high upfront capital expenditure required for technology acquisition and seed-breeding or research and developmentfacilities.' It pointed out that Genting Plantations' 60% share of the potential investment in the joint-venture (JV) is about RM315mil. Genting Plantations, via its indirect wholly owned unit ACGT Vegetable AgVentures (AVA), is planning a JV with Shouguang Vegetable Science & Technology (SVST), a Malaysian subsidiary of China's Shandong Shouguang Vegetable Industry Group (CSV). The JV will develop 70 acres of land in Kulai, Johor, into a centre of excellence for tropical vegetable crops. Two JV companies will be formed, one to spearhead seed breeding and technology transfer, and another to manage greenhouses, production, processing and trading. AVA will hold 60% in both entities, while SVST holds 40%. The completion is targeted by the first quarter of next year. In total, the capital commitment is about RM525mil by both parties. BIMB Research described the capital commitment as 'sizeable' and therefore, execution risks exist. 'But Genting Plantations' majority 60% stake and CSV's expertise and proven track record could mitigate downside,' the research house added. It also sees the JV as a strategic diversification beyond palm oil, strengthening Genting Plantations' environmental, social and governance credentials and aligning with Malaysia's food-security goals. 'Partnering CSV accelerates Genting Plantations' entry into high-value vegetable seeds and crops, a segment with growing domestic and export potential,' it added. CIMB Research noted that proceeds from Genting Plantations' recent disposal of agricultural land in Melaka to Scientex Bhd for RM333.8mil should be sufficient to fund the investment. Should the full amount be debt-funded, BIMB Research estimated that Genting Plantations' gearing would rise to about 0.34 times. This is still within comfortable levels and broadly in line with the plantation sector's average of around 0.4 times. 'We do not expect this JV to constrain Genting Plantations' dividend or capital expenditure plans for plantations.' BIMB Research has a 'buy' call on the stock, with a target price of RM6 a share. CIMB Research kept its 'hold' call with a target price of RM5.28.

Northern Singapore's development to benefit JS-SEZ
HLIB Research said the long-term plans for Woodlands, Kranji and Sembawang, forming Singapore's northern corridor, underscored how the growth region 'is a two-sided initiative'. PETALING JAYA: The redevelopment plans for Singapore's northern coast across from the southern tip of Johor is expected to have positive spillover effects for the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Additionally, these plans will also reinforce the integration of the growth areas on both sides of the border. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research, which maintained an 'overweight' rating on Malaysian property developers active in the JS-SEZ, said the long-term plans for Woodlands, Kranji and Sembawang, forming Singapore's northern corridor, underscored how the growth region 'is a two-sided initiative'. 'Some of the expansion plans include a five-fold expansion of the Woodlands checkpoint, seamless rapid transit system (RTS)-mass rapid transit (MRT) integration, new industrial spaces, housing projects and a rejuvenated northern waterfront,' it said. It added that this translatesd into stronger residential appeal for workers commuting daily, industrial spillovers into logistics and manufacturing as well as rising retail and tourism demand. Besides the cross-border transportation links between the RTS and MRT, there would also be a seamless transfer to the MRT Thomson-East Coast Line in which new 'flexible' industrial spaces targeted at businesses seeking to tap into the JS-SEZ will be introduced. This is coupled with new public housing projects totalling 4,000 flats near Admiralty Park, and additional residential developments along the Woodlands waterfront. 'Singapore also has plans to rejuvenate adjacent areas such as Kranji and Sembawang. Together, the three districts will anchor a vibrant new northern waterfront destination, reshaping the economic and social profile of Singapore's northern gateway,' the research house said. It noted that with faster checkpoint clearance and direct RTS-MRT integration, daily commuting for workers who work in Singapore and stay in Johor becomes more practical. It noted that property developers with Johor exposure in housing, industrial and retail segments would benefit from this long-term plan. Its top picks for Malaysian property stocks with 'buy' calls include IOI Properties Group Bhd with a target price (TP) of RM4.05, OSK Holdings Bhd with a TP of RM2.13, Sunway Bhd with a TP of RM5.90 and Sime Darby Property Bhd with a TP of RM2.05.
