Who is Kimbal Musk? Elon's brother in spotlight after swipe at Trump over tariffs

Mint27-04-2025

While the world's richest man, Elon Musk, has refrained from openly criticising United States President Donald Trump's tariffs policy, his brother has had no such problem. Kimbal Musk grabbed headlines for his strongly worded X posts against Donald Trump's tariffs and their impact on prices and costs for American businesses and customers.
According to the Tesla investor relations page, Kimbal is 'an entrepreneur, activist, and chef' who has 'co-founded and invested in companies' for more than two decades. Forbes in a profile, said Kimbal Musk is worth an estimated $900 million — largely via stakes in his brother's multi-billion dollar businesses Tesla and SpaceX.
So, we take a look at who is Kimbal Musk, how rich is he, and how he gained his nearly billion-dollar his fortune.
Kimbal Musk is the younger brother of Elon Musk. He was born in Pretoria (South Africa) on September 20, 1972. Like the rest of his family, he currently holds US citizenship. In 1995 he acquired a degree in business from Queen's University, Canada, where he moved to live with his mother along with sister Tosca Musk in 1989.
He is now married to Christiana Wyly, daughter of businessman Sam Wyly, and lives in Boulder, Colarado (USA). Active on social media via Instagram and X, Kimbal Musk is known for his signature cowbot hat, which he has worn since 2014.
The Tesla investor relations profile page describes Kimbal Musk as an 'entrepreneur, activist, and chef', who has 'co-founded and invested in companies across technology, hospitality, entertainment, and agricultural industries'.
Kimbal Musk's personal mission, according to the website, is 'to empower innovators and scale sustainable technologies that help contribute to a happier, healthier future'. As per the website, Kimbal Musk co-founded online maps company Zip2 Corporation with brother Elon Musk, which was sold to Compaq for $307 million; which later merged with Yahoo Maps in 1999. According to a report by People Magazine, the brothers recieved funding from their parents and sister Tosca.
He is a founding director of SpaceX, in which he invested in 2002 (he was on the board till January 2002). The same year he acquired chipmaker Intel's light drone division and called it Nova Sky Stories (he is CEO and co-founder).
He also invested in EV automaker Tesla, of which he owns shares and is part of the Board of Directors since 2004.
After selling Zip2, Kimbal Musk studied at the French Culinary Institute in New York. Following his culinary ambitions, in 2004, he co-founded restaurant company The Kitchen (he is also CEO), with chef Hugo Matheson and then-wife Jen Lewin in Boulder (Colorado, USA), which purchases food directly from local farmers.
In 2006, he become the CEO of search engine called OneRiot, which was acquired by Walmart in 2011.
Between 2013-19, Kimbal Musk was a Director at American restaurant chain Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc.
In 2016, he co-founded Square Roots, an urban indoor farm company growing fresh, local greens in climate-controlled, AI equipped shipping containers. It shut down major operations in 2023, the People report added.
Forbes, in its latest article on the Musk siblings Elon and Kimbal, said the younger brother was among those who made 'lucrative' gains from their association with the Tesla and SpaceX chief. His stake in SpaceX is worth an estimated $200 million.
Kimbal Musk is worth around $900 million, largely thanks to stakes in SpaceX and Tesla. During the markets high post Donald Trump's US elections win, his Tesla stake was worth around $1.3 billion (in December 2024), according to Forbes. His stake now is worth $380 million.
Forbes dubbed Kimbal Musk's role in his brother's empire as 'Musktocracy' — those whose wealth is tied to Elon Musk's rising fortunes. Other names include board members Larry Ellison and Marc Andressen, it added.
Compared to his brother, Kimbal Musk's own ventures have been far less successful. He did not respond to Forbes' queries for the story, but 20 people who worked directly with Kimbal Musk did, the report said.
How did they describe him? A 'laid-back personality who prefers cooking to high-stakes dealmaking and building tech companies, but who has continually been drawn into Elon's orbit'.
Key Takeaways Kimbal Musk has a net worth of approximately $900 million, primarily derived from his investments in Tesla and SpaceX, reflecting the financial benefits of being associated with his brother Elon Musk's successful ventures.
His professional identity encompasses being an entrepreneur, activist, and chef, with a focus on empowering innovators and promoting sustainable technologies across various industries.
Despite his significant wealth, Kimbal Musk's personal business ventures have not achieved the same level of success as Elon Musk's, indicating a preference for a more laid-back lifestyle centered around cooking rather than high-pressure business dealings.

Did This Mysterious 'X' Account Stop Elon Musk And Donald Trump's Ugly Spat?

Last Updated: A mysterious account was hailed as hero for possibly saving space explorations after Elon Musk exploded on US President Donald Trump and threatened to decommission Dragon aircraft. An X account with barely any followers is being hailed as a hero for possibly helping Elon Musk cool down during his ugly spat with Donald Trump. For the uninitiated, the two powerful men had a dirty public fallout after the US President publicly criticized the world's richest man and his former pal at a White House press briefing, backing legislation that could severely impact the electric vehicle industry. Musk owns Tesla. This did not sit down well with the Teslaman for obvious reasons. Logging into the website he owns, Musk took to X and responded to the President he sounded 'ungrateful" after the techie backed Trump both strategically and financially during the 2024 US Presidential elections. One thing led to another and Musk had a meltdown of epic proportions online for the world to witness. Several political and personal attacks were directly aimed at Trump but at some point in the day, Musk had a divine intervention. A Shame An X user who goes by the handle @Fab25june responded to one of Musk's (deleted) posts stating that the Tesla chief had to stop the back and forth. The unknown X user was responding to Musk's threat to 'decommission" SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft that carries astronauts and essential supplies to the International Space Station. For context, Musk's post was in response to Trump's threat to chop federal contracts with his companies. The X user, tired of the standoff between the two powerful men, came in to save the day. 'This is a shame this back and forth. You are both better than this. Cool off and take a step back for a couple days," the user wrote. Musk, realising that his retaliation could have a major impact on space exploration with NASA being directly affected by his actions, took a breather and called it a day. 'Good advice. Ok, we won't decommission Dragon," a humbled down Musk wrote in response. (X Screengrab) 'Saviour Of Space Exploration" As news websites across the globe reported about Musk dropping the insane plan of decommissioning the Dragon spacecraft, folks on the X platform quietly thanked the soul for possibly saving the future of space travel. Shoutout to this guy with 17 followers for saving space exploration — greg (@greg16676935420) June 6, 2025 'Never think your voice doesn't count," wrote one. 'Haha oh man. This is why I decided to mostly ignore today's drama and come back to see what filters out. Good on Alaska." 'This man really walked into the Elon drama like: 'Guys, stop fighting" — and they DID." The account, for obvious reasons, experienced a massive jump in its followers count, taking them from a couple of hundred followers to over 6K in a single day. He gets a lot of subsidy, so we'll take a look at that only if it's fair for him and for the country. Vivek Ramaswamy's photo with kids faces racist slur again: 'Why don't Americans deport this Indian?'

A heartwarming picture of Indian-origin Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy was bombarded with racist and anti-immigrant comments by X users, as the MAGA world imploded with Donald Trump and Elon Musk attacking each other in public. Vivek Ramaswamy was closely aligned with the MAGA movement until Christmas 2024, when he criticised aspects of American culture and strongly reaffirmed his support for the H-1B visa programme. At the time, he was serving as co-chief of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency. While Musk initially backed Ramaswamy's stance on H-1B visas, he reportedly disapproved of his subsequent actions. As a result, Ramaswamy stepped down from DOGE even before Donald Trump's inauguration. Ramaswamy had also put his hat in the ring for the US presidential polls but later withdrew from the race, despite backing from both Musk and Trump. As the two heavyweights locked horns on social media, Ramaswamy posted a photo carrying his two children — Karthik and Arjun — and wrote: "It's why we do it." The post had no connection with the MAGA crisis but was still met with vicious trolling. However, the comment section quickly turned hostile, with many users mocking Ramaswamy — some pointing out that 'Americans wear socks inside shoes,' likely referencing an earlier interview where he appeared barefoot. One user even asked Grok to change the background of the photo to a 'garbage-filled street in India.' "Why don't Americans deport this Indian?" one asked. "Is there a scientific reason as to why I find this photo repulsive?" a third user said. "Send him back to India... In the name of Jesus Christ," another wrote. "Do it in India," a hater said. Some X users pressed Ramaswamy to share his views on the Trump–Elon Musk feud, urging him to take a clear stand. While a few praised him for 'seeing it all much ahead of time,' others were curious about the extent of his falling out with Musk before he was shown the door at DOGE. One user questioned the MAGA movement's double standards, asking why it embraces Elon Musk — who wasn't born in the US — but not Vivek Ramaswamy, who was born in Cincinnati.

"Don't Fight Guys": Ex-Russia President To Trump, Musk. Tesla CEO Responds

New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions between US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has offered to mediate a "peace deal" between them - a role assumed by the Republican leader amid the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to Mr Dmitry Medvedev, Moscow is ready to become a mediator for a "reasonable fee". They will accept Starlink shares as payment, he said. "We are ready to facilitate the conclusion of a peace deal between D and E for a reasonable fee and to accept Starlink shares as payment. Don't fight, guys," the former Russian President wrote in a post on X. To this, the Tesla CEO responded with a laughing emoji. 😂 — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 6, 2025 Mr Medvedev's comment comes a day after Russian lawmaker Dmitry Novikov has suggested that Musk could seek political asylum in Russia. "I think that Musk has a completely different game, that he will not need any political asylum, although, if he did, Russia, of course, could provide it," Mr Novikov told the Russian News Agency TASS. The lawmaker noted that over the years, Musk has formed "a kind of political communication", so "individual disagreements will remain separate disagreements". "At this stage, the return of the Democratic team to the White House in three years is not what I think Musk needs and not what he is ready to applaud. Therefore, there are tactical differences, and there are strategic things, and he will adhere to them, it seems to me," he said. Another Russian senator, Dmitry Rogozin, who once ran the country's space programme, wrote to Musk on X, saying, "If you encounter insurmountable problems in the US, come to us. Here you will find reliable comrades and complete freedom of technical creativity." Musk was the largest donor to Trump's 2024 election campaign, featured in his pre-poll outings and then remained firmly by his side as the Republican assumed office. Trump had even praised the billionaire in his victory speech, saying a "star is born". But months later, the friction between the two former allies began shortly after the Tesla CEO criticised the US President's marquee tax bill, calling it too expensive and a measure that would undermine his work with the US DOGE Service. Days later, Musk announced his exit from the US administration. Irked by Musk's criticism, Trump said he was "very disappointed with Elon". Then Musk, never one to retreat quietly, retaliated, posting on X, "Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate." This turned into an ugly spat with Musk making big accusations against Trump.
