‘Denzel was scheming, powerful and sexy!': readers' worst Oscar snubs

The Guardian29-01-2025

Monkey Man! I've heard very little of this thriller in reviewers' top films of 2024, or lists of films snubbed by the Oscars. I think people are doing Patel a disservice by forgetting this film. He is incredible as both a director and actor in this movie. For his violent and beautifully coordinated fight scenes alone I think this film deserves more recognition. But it's so much more than that; the storyline encompasses an origin story, a hero arc, and a dystopian setting that closely emulates the world we live in. The inclusion of underrepresented voices also reflects what we should value cinema for, presenting the hijra community in such an openly positive way was refreshing and enlightening to see. Eleanor, 22, Buckinghamshire
Clarence Maclin for best supporting actor in Sing Sing. Sing Sing is based on the true story of the Rehabilitation Through the Arts programme at Sing Sing correctional facility. Other than Colman Domingo, and one or two other professional actors, most of the cast are previously incarcerated inmates playing themselves. This includes Maclin, who serves as the foil to Domingo's Divine G. His character arc is the heart of the film, and he is mesmerising and magnetic. I was floored to learn he wasn't a professional actor, and to play himself while depicting such growth and subtlety is unlike anything else I have seen. While Domingo has been nominated for best actor, I think Maclin's performance was equal if not superior to it, and all the more impressive for his playing himself. Laura, 30, Glasgow
I really feel Denzel was snubbed for Gladiator II. He had his own gravity in that movie. His performance was incredibly fun but also nuanced and showed a side of him as an actor that we don't normally get to see: scheming, powerful and a bit sexy. When I left the theatre, my lasting impression wasn't of Paul Mescal's fight scenes or sharks in the Colosseum, but rather of Denzel's captivating turn as Macrinus. Marguerite Manning, 25, London
The romantic tennis drama Challengers was overlooked this year for its soundtrack, which played perfectly into the 'Brat summer' genre of last year, reflecting the sounds of tennis balls hitting courts and shoes skidding with dance beats. Then there's the original song 'Compress / Repress', where Trent Reznor creates the modern-day feeling of a Peter Gabriel song with fantastic groove. I have never heard a soundtrack like it. It stands strongly on its own. This was my favourite movie of the year, and although it isn't tackling anything super deep and profound, it is well made and such a fun time. Georgia Mallett, 23, Kentucky, USA
I think the horror film Heretic should have at least a nomination for best original screenplay. A brilliantly crafted horror that features true suspense and a truly great performance by Hugh Grant. The Monopoly scene alone is so beautifully written that it had me in hysterics. And in awe that the film had the bravery and inclination to show the antagonists' true beliefs and theories on religion. Outstanding. Pete, Salford
I genuinely don't understand the lack of excitement and awards hype for Dune: Part Two. It was by far the most exhilarating movie-theatre experience I had last year and is the closest thing to match my excitement for Oppenheimer. For Denis Villeneuve to not be nominated for best director is a travesty. There is a lot of bad sci-fi made, so for this one to turn out even better than the first is an achievement that should be celebrated. Brendan, 31, Ontario, Canada
I'm surprised Kate Winslet hasn't been nominated for more awards for her portrayal of Lee Miller in the war drama Lee. The only individual nomination she had was at the Golden Globes, but hers was as good a performance as any on the Oscars nominations list. It's the type of performance – of a historical figure – that the Academy is usually eager to recognise. On this, I'm also surprised that Lee as a film hasn't received a nomination for best picture. Brett, 38, Greater Manchester
Daniel Craig was overlooked for best actor in Queer. Craig manages, through the form and function of his performance, to incur the viewer's contempt and sympathy in equal measure. There lurks a real and hidden gentleness in the character. Among the faux malice of people raging against the dying of the light, Craig invites us into the soul and inner conflicts of his character. Patrick Callaghan, 63, London
The drama Vermiglio by Maura Delpero deserved a nomination for best international film. I was so fascinated by the story, the interpretations of the actors, many of them on camera for the first time, the use of light and the scenery. It tells the tale of a family, of love and resentment, of a history not so distant, of motherhood as a salvation or a prison, of stillness and changes. I thought the film was simply striking. And the very last scene was so moving. Anonymous, 30, Italy

Prime Video adds 'one of the best sequels ever' two months after cinema release

Fans think it was one of the best films released this year Prime Video has just added what's being hailed as the 'action film of the year' and 'one of the best sequels ever'. The Accountant 2, a follow-up to the 2016 original, is now part of Amazon's streaming library as of today (June 5), despite only hitting cinemas earlier this year. The first film, considered a hidden gem by many, can be viewed with a Sky Cinema subscription or a NOW membership. ‌ Ben Affleck reprises his role as forensic accountant Christian Wolff in the sequel, teaming up with his estranged yet deadly brother, portrayed by Jon Bernthal, to hunt down elusive assassins. ‌ Rumours of a sequel began circulating in 2017, but as time passed, it seemed to fade from fans' minds. Speculation about a third instalment has also been rife, with filming for the sequel only starting in March last year. Despite lukewarm critical reception for the first film, it became a fan favourite, and followers have finally been rewarded with a sequel. Bill Dubuque, the original writer who later created the Netflix series Ozark, returned to write the script and also took on directing duties, reports Bristol Live. The sequel has outperformed its predecessor both commercially and critically, earning a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans have been quick to laud it both as a standalone action film and for its achievements as a sequel. One devotee put it succinctly: "one of the best sequels ever". Another remarked: "This is probably the best action movie of the year. The test of a good sequel, for me, is that it works as movie in its own right, which this does. Whilst it will not win any Oscars, it was thoroughly enjoyable and made us laugh. The story line connects well to the original movie and the dynamic between the brothers is both funny and serious at the same time." ‌ Sharing their verdict on social media, another added: "This is how you do a sequel! The Accountant 2 blew me away. Unlike most action sequels that just go bigger and louder, this one slows down when it needs to and it works. The relationship between the brothers actually matters, and that emotional core gives the action real weight." They elaborated: "There's comedy that actually made me laugh, a bit of romance, and a moment or two that hit surprisingly hard. And yeah, when it's time to throw down, the fight scenes are slick, brutal, and insanely fun to watch. I came for the action, stayed for the characters, and left fully satisfied. Give me The Accountant 3 now!" While many spectators had previously declared the original film as Affleck's finest hour, some are now suggesting that the follow-up offers Daredevil actor Bernthal his crowning moment. One viewer praised Bernthal's performance, saying: "Bernthal is a national treasure. It was nice to see him do his thing in an action movie and not have nightmares from his grunting noises he does as the Punisher. He has never disappointed in any film, and made this movie 100% better just being in it."

Fans have just days to watch ‘perfect' rom-com that swept board at Oscars

A rom-com musical that earned its main star a Best Actress Oscar is available on Netflix - but not for much longer. A romantic musical that dazzled critics, stormed the awards season and left audiences swooning is about to vanish from BBC iPlayer. La La Land (2016), the film that reignited the movie musical for a new generation, will leave the platform on June 9. Damien Chazelle's film is a full-hearted tribute to old Hollywood, youthful ambition, and the romanticising of dreams that don't come true. ‌ Starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, the film follows aspiring actress Mia and jazz pianist Sebastian as they navigate the highs and heartbreaks of chasing stardom in Los Angeles. ‌ Their romance, full of vintage flourishes and spontaneous song, plays out against the backdrop of a city where every barista is auditioning, and every traffic jam could become a dance number. The opening sequence - a musical number set on a gridlocked LA freeway - became an instant classic and set the tone for a film that blends fantasy and realism. Chazelle, who had just come off Whiplash, directed with a master's eye for style and rhythm. But La La Land's emotional power comes largely from its two leads. Gosling oozes cool as the jazz purist with a dream of owning his own club, while Stone brings warmth and fragility to Mia, a woman always on the cusp of both failure and greatness. At the Oscars, La La Land famously won six awards - including Best Director and Best Actress for Stone - and briefly claimed Best Picture before the now-infamous envelope mix-up, which ended up seeing Moonlight take the biggest prize. ‌ That viral moment aside, the film's impact was undeniable: a critical and commercial triumph, and the highest-grossing original live-action musical of all time at the time of release. On Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds a sparkling 91% score, viewers still sing its praises. One reviewer said: 'La la Land truly depicts the atmosphere that Hollywood brings to the world, everyone with their ambitions trying to bring them to life, but at what cost". ‌ Another added: 'From the way it was written and portrayed by the actors to the way it was received, it's all amazing. I really enjoyed watching this movie because of its colours and shots - you can really see that somebody put effort and heart into this." A third wrote simply: 'Masterpiece. My favourite musical of all time. My favourite movie of all time." The soundtrack - with songs like 'City of Stars' and 'Audition (The Fools Who Dream)' - became a sensation in its own right. Justin Hurwitz's original score, paired with lyrics by Pasek and Paul, brought a new wave of jazz-infused ballads into the public mind, and helped secure the film's legacy. If you've somehow never seen it, or just want to revisit Mia and Sebastian's story under the golden Los Angeles sky, the clock is ticking: La La Land is available to stream on BBC iPlayer, but only until June 9.

Woman makes incredible find in thrift store and is told to sell it for £1m

A bargain hunter has been urged to insure her finds after stumbling upon two incredible pieces of 1980s Hollywood movie memorabilia in an American thrift store An American woman has been urged to cash in on her thrift store find after she unknowingly uncovered a stunning piece of personalised Oscars memorabilia. Self-confessed Star Wars nerd, Libbers, said she was hunting for action figures based on the space saga when she made her startling discovery. Taking to TikTok in excitement, she explained: "I found some action figures and a Jurassic Park VHS tape which I thought was super cool, and then I saw a China cabinet containing things I didn't think were for sale because inside of it was a whole bunch of Muppets memorabilia that looked like it came from a producer." After gaining permission to look in the cabinet, Libbers pulled out the programme for the 1980 Academy Awards where The Muppet Movie had received two nominations. ‌ Libbers continued: "Inside was a letter to [Muppets creator] Jim Henson, [puppeteer and filmmaker] Frank Oz and [executive producer] David Lazer as well as a note wishing David good luck." However, she wasn't done there as she went on to detail "the more impressive of the two" purchases she made. ‌ WARNING – explicit language in TikTok video below, viewer discretion advised She then showcased an original script of The Dark Crystal, a 1982 dark fantasy film directed by both Henson and Oz. "This is the fourth draft so not everything in here is even in the movie, which is insane to me," Libbers noted. "I'm trying so hard not to scream and jump up and down." Opening the original script, Libbers noted that it had been signed and dated by Lazer, who was the producer. "This is actually crazy," she said. "This is going to be my prized possession - I will have to put it on display. My Muppet-loving heart is going crazy." Libbers wasn't done there, however, as she went on to detail the "best part" of her find. "I got it for free," she exclaimed. "My mum had just bout $80 [£59] worth of stuff from the thrift shop and I was going to pay $40 [£29.50]. But after I bought the action figures and the VHS, the lady said, 'Don't worry about it - you're good'." She closed: "I am ecstatic right now! This is crazy. It's The Dark Crystal. Like The Dark Crystal." Libbers clip soon went viral, with amazed TikTok users quick to offer her advice on her relic. "Please get a lawyer if anyone tries to contact you, like for real… do not accept any offer if it's under 1 million," one person advised. ‌ A second hailed: "Jealousy is not even a strong enough word. Also as a 45 year old it makes me happy when younger people still love Muppets and The Dark Crystal." A third individual urged: "Disney is closing Jim Henson's final legacy piece in Hollywood Studios, you better not sell it to them." A fourth recommended: "I'm sure you're on it already, but get them appraised and insured." Whilst a fifth TikTok user said: "I would actually start sobbing if I was in your position. The Dark Crystal means so much to me. it's one of my favourite movies as a kid and one of the reasons why I make puppets today. I'm so glad that it's in hands that will cherish and take care of it." In response to several queries, meanwhile, Libbers returned to the comments section to clarify: "For everyone wondering, it was just a regular local thrift store, not a specialty one. David Lazer the producer of The Dark Crystal happened to live in my town upon his passing and the thrift store some how ended up with some of his belongings."
