BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — One Canfield Native is celebrating the release of her new book filled with fantasy, adventure and rock 'n' roll.
When Joan Reardon was a kid, her mom would bring her to the Boardman Barnes & Noble, where she gravitated toward fantasy books like 'Harry Potter' and 'Percy Jackson.'
'There has never been a time in my life where I wasn't writing,' Reardon said. 'My parents love to tell a story of when I was a baby and I would just scribble on pieces of paper and stack them on top of each other and say, 'I wrote a book.''
Twenty years later, she returned to that same store to find her own new book, 'Dad Rock Dragon Quest,' on the shelves — right next to the books she once fell in love with.
'It's about a family that's a blended family that goes on an adventure to rescue a dragon from magical poachers,' Reardon said. 'Simultaneously, it also features, you know, a lot of rock and roll, plenty of references to like 'Top Gun' and eighties action movies. So it's kind of a story for the whole family.'
This is Reardon's second book to be published and sold in thousands of stores across the country, but it holds a special place in her heart. She says many aspects of the story are based on her husband, whom she married shortly after finishing the book in 2023.
'We did, I think, one round of edits, and then we sent it out to the publisher, and we didn't hear back for about two months,' Reardon said. 'And then, the night of our rehearsal dinner, we got news that it was going to be published. So two reasons to celebrate.'
Reardon wrote the book in between her law school classes, and, over the past year and a half, she has worked with Simon & Schuster publishing company to get ready for the book's grand release, which was on June 3.
'There's a lot of love and work that goes into the book from, you know, dozens of people. And so everyone's very, very excited to finally have it in stores,' Reardon said.
So far, the book has already received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and been picked as a gold standard selection from the Junior Library Guild.
But she's not stopping there — she's already putting the finishing touches on the first draft of her next book.

Simply Slavic Festival set to kick off in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN)- The Simply Slavic Festival returns to the Valley this weekend. The event kicks off Friday night and runs through Saturday. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. It's meant to celebrate the impact of the Slavic people and their descendants on the Valley. Attendees can expect food, dancers, and performers this weekend. This is the 14th year for the event. Organizers say they're expecting a great turnout this weekend. Some of the Slavic foods that will be offered include pierogies, stuffed cabbage and the popular chimney cake. Dancers and bands will be performing on both nights of the festival. Organizers say this is a great event to have because it helps others learn about the culture. 'One of the reasons is to recognize and make sure the third, fourth, fifth generation Slavs here in the Mahoning Valley learn about their culture, learn where their great grandparents came from and the culture that they brought with them,' said Aundrea Heschmeyer, the co-founder of Simply Slavic. In 2024, the event was held at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheater. After a successful 2024 event at the venue, Simply Slavic has a five-year agreement with JAC Management Group. This makes it the first nonprofit event to secure a long-term contract, and ensures Simply Slavic will continue to grow while remaining rooted in Youngstown. Organizers say it's a stress relief knowing exactly where the event will be. 'We would wait for the city to decide, 'OK, we have to move you back a block. We have to move you a block to the right.' It affects the whole layout of the event. So, for us to know since January that the festival was going to be at the Amphitheater and we're going to put the heritage tent here and we're going to put these booths here makes a huge difference,' Heschmeyer said. Heschmeyer says that her favorite part about putting on the festival is seeing everyone excited. This is an event that has brought people from all around the country. She says many families will come in from out of town just to attend the festival. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. LEGO Isn't Only Treating Star Wars Fans, Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle Set Drops to New Record Low Price

Build this lovely set up piece-by-piece and then just enjoy it as a set-piece for $144. If you're looking for a gift to get someone who loves Harry Potter, then you're probably staring at a long list of options, all of them feeling a little bit overwhelming. There are plenty of things to choose from, sure, but how many of them will be really special? Well, the answer to this conundrum, and plenty of other ones, is Lego. See at Amazon That's because you can currently grab the Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle and Grounds set with 15% off. This thing is an absolute beauty once it's all put together, and it's sure to offer plenty of joy to any fan you manage to get it for. Yes, that includes yourself if you're just looking for an excuse to get a little treat. Your Letter Is Here As with so many modern Lego sets, the aim here isn't really to play. The aim here is, instead, to spend a few really quality hours building it. You can do that alone, sure, but building it with a friend or some family can make for a really solid way to spend a few evenings and bond a little bit too. There's a lot of fun to be had meticulously putting together any Lego set, but especially when it's one as grandiose as this. That's just the first part of the fun though, the rest of the fun is a little bit more passive. You then get to have this on a shelf, mantlepiece, or even your desk if you've got enough space, and then just smile to yourself as you walk past it. It's worth noting you do need to actually build the 2,660 piece set first, and when we say it's going to be a few evenings, we mean if you're dedicated and putting some serious hours in. The end result is pretty massive too. It measures 21 cm high, 35 cm wide, and 25 cm deep, so you'll need a big enough place to actually display it. As long as you've got that though, you'll be able to enjoy the set for as long as you want to, and maybe even use it as the start of a collection that'll last you for years to come. That's a lot of happiness out of just one thing, and given that it's down to $144 for a limited time, that's all the more reason to treat yourself for once. There's no telling when this set will go on sale again, so don't miss out. See at Amazon

Vox Media Union Reaches Agreement on Three-Year Contract

Vox Media's union employees will not hit the picket line for now: On Friday morning, the union said it had reached a tentative three-year agreement with the digital media company after an overnight bargaining session. The Vox Media Union covers editorial staff at The Verge, Eater, SB Nation, Pop Sugar, Thrillist, Vox Media Podcast Network and The Dodo. 'As a deal has now been reached, there will not be any pickets outside Vox Media's office in New York,' the union said Friday. The tentative deal covers about 250 writers and other editorial workers represented by the Writers Guild of America East. Union members and the WGAE Council's Online Media sector representatives will vote to ratify the contract in the coming days. The union said full details of the agreement will be released upon ratification. Union leadership said the top concerns for a new deal included proposals on pay, AI protections, benefits, and assurances for severance and layoff procedures. Vox Media, like many other media companies, has implemented multiple rounds of layoffs in recent years, most recently with a third wave of job cuts in January within a brief succession of weeks. Vox Media at one point had about 2,000 employees but that number has shrunk with the job cuts. In 2019 the company acquired New York Media, publisher of New York Magazine, in an all-stock deal designed to gain synergies of scale. Two years later, Vox Media merged with Group Nine Media, a digital media roll-up venture whose backers had included Discovery.
