Customers furious after Game cancels Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders
UK high street chain Game has apologised after it cancelled some pre-orders of the hotly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
Gamers have waited years for the Switch 2 - the successor to one of the best-selling consoles in history - with the new model being finally released to the public on 5 June.
But some of those who pre-ordered the Switch 2 through Game will now not be able to get their hands on it on its release date.
"We understand how disappointing this is, especially for those who have been eagerly awaiting their order," Game wrote in a post on social media.
There has been a furious reaction from those affected, with one customer calling the situation "outrageous."
Game did not give any reason why the pre-orders were cancelled. The BBC has approached it for comment.
In its social media post it says it is "currently working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible."
I played the £75 Mario Kart World on Switch 2 - was it worth it?
The Switch 2 has already attracted some controversy from fans who questioned the price of some of its games - with a boxed edition of Mario Kart World coming in at £74.99.
But this price appears not to have impacted the initial sales of the hardware, with most retailers now unable to take on new pre-orders so close to its launch.
Gamers who no longer have a pre-order may consider turning to the return of the midnight launch, which used to be part-and-parcel of game releases but has become far less common in recent years.
At least one retailer has held back some stock in the hope of getting people through its doors - with Smyths promising a "limited" number of consoles will be available in-store when doors open on launch day.
Fans scrambling to get their hands on new consoles has been a part of Nintendo's history, for example with the Wii in 2006.
The original Switch ended up becoming the fastest-selling console in history in the US when in launched in 2017.
This is not just limited to Nintendo - its rival Sony's PlayStation 5 proved to be such a hot ticket item that people joined virtual queues with thousands of others just to have the chance to buy one in 2020.
This trend continued throughout the first three years of the console's life, with the supply chain issues that partly fuelled the demand only being resolved in 2023.
Nintendo announces Switch 2 release date - and a new Mario Kart game
Will £75 be the new normal for video games after Switch 2's Mario Kart?

The end of my trip to Scotland. I'm back in the good old US of A and ready to drive on the right side of the road again like a civilized human being. I'm also ready to solve the final Wordle of May and tally the final Competitive Wordle score against the nefarious Wordle Bot. Let's do it! The Hint: Easier to form bad ones. The Clue: This Wordle begins and ends with consonants. Okay, spoilers below! The answer is coming! Today's Wordle Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here. I was working on this post while traveling. I enjoy working in airports but I'm always a bit more distracted and today I screwed up my second guess. MUSIC left me with 80 words and eliminated the 'C' which I promptly used in CRATE for my second guess. So annoying! Still, this cut my possible solutions down to just four and I got lucky when I guessed HABIT for the win. I'll take a sloppy win! Today's Wordle Bot In spite of my screw-up, I still beat the Bot today. I get 1 point for guessing in three and another for beating the Bot. The Bot gets 0 for guessing in four and -1 for losing to me. Once a narrow race, our May tally ends with a pretty resounding victory for your humble narrator: Erik: 24 points Wordle Bot: 14 points The word habit comes from the Latin habitus, meaning "condition, appearance, dress," which itself is from habere, meaning "to have" or "to hold." It entered English via Old French habit, initially referring to clothing or attire, and later came to mean a customary practice or behavior. Your Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order may have been cancelled with no explanation
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Quick Summary Some customers have had their Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders cancelled without any warning. UK retailer Game has informed some buyers that not only will their Switch 2 console will not arrive on launch day, their early orders have been scrapped entirely. It is also yet to provide an explanation why. The Nintendo Switch 2 will finally be available next week, with consoles shipping for the 5 June 2025 release date. However, not everyone will get their pre-orders, it seems. One retailer has cancelled some of its Switch 2 pre-orders, with no explanation as to why. Game in the UK has informed several of its customers that their early orders of Nintendo's new machine will no longer be fulfilled. It has sent them cancellation notices and simply posted an apology on its X feed without further details. "We sincerely apologise for the recent cancellation of some Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders," it reads (via the BBC). "We understand how disappointing this is, especially for those who have been eagerly awaiting their order." There is some good news for some of those who have ordered, though – Game is trying to reinstate their purchases. "We're currently working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible." It goes on to say that it will be in touch with updates. There's seemingly no guarantee this will happen before launch day – if at all. Although Game doesn't explain why it has cancelled orders – such as the one placed by disgruntled X user @nomad_ebp – there are two trains of thought: it either hasn't received enough stock to fulfil all of its orders in time, or there has been a technical error in the pre-ordering process. The latter is backed up by the retailer's comment that it's trying to reinstate affected orders, although it clearly does still have a record of each purchase as it has informed each customer individually. It's more likely that it over-estimated its pre-order stock levels. Nintendo had previously promised to manufacture more stock in order to beat the scalpers, but considering just how much demand there has been for the Switch 2, even it might have been taken by surprise. We haven't yet heard of other retailers cancelling their pre-orders, while some have promised (in the UK, at least) to reserve some units for purchase on day one. You'll likely have to queue early in the morning though, as it's unlikely they'll be available for long. In the meantime, you can check T3's Switch 2 stock updates for the UK and US to find out where best to place your orders.
