Police have detained supporters of the political opposition in the Moldovan capital Chisinau after they attempted to hold a rally for jailed local Euroskeptic leader Evgenia Gutsul.
Members of the youth wing of the opposition Victory bloc gathered at the city's railway station on Saturday morning, where they began setting up a tent camp. The unauthorized protest was aimed at calling for Gutsul's release and denounced what activists described as the 'lawlessness' of the authorities. Victory bloc has repeatedly been barred from running in elections, over alleged procedural violations.
Footage from Ruptly showed security forces dismantling tents and removing people from the area; several were arrested.
Local media have reported that police have also been stopping buses carrying protesters from reaching Chisinau for a wider anti-government protest scheduled for the afternoon. The rallies are a response to the sentencing of Gutsul, the elected leader of Gagauzia, an autonomous, predominantly Russian-speaking region in southern Moldova, to seven years in prison for alleged financial crimes.
She rejected the charges as a politically motivated attempt to silence opposition ahead of September's parliamentary elections, calling the verdict 'a blow to democracy' and a threat to anyone challenging the country's pro-Western leadership.
Gutsul has advocated for closer ties with Russia, in contrast to the pro-Western stance of Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
Sandu has accelerated Moldova's EU and NATO accession efforts since she was first elected in 2020. However, her decisions have increasingly polarized Moldovans amid a backdrop of worsening economic prospects and a crackdown on dissent.
Moscow has criticized Gutsul's verdict as an attack on democracy, with Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova labelling it a 'culmination of repression by the Chisinau regime against the entire Gagauz autonomy.'

No return of Crimea and no NATO for Ukraine

It is 'impossible' for Crimea to return to Ukraine or for the country to join NATO, US President Donald Trump told Fox & Friends on Tuesday. Adding that Kiev had approached the US-led military bloc to seek help in trying to get the peninsula back. 'They went in and said 'We want to get Crimea back'. This was at the beginning,' Trump revealed. 'The other thing they said was 'We want to be a member of NATO'. Well, both of those things are impossible.' 'It was always a no-no,' both during the time of the Soviet Union, and now with Russia, Trump explained, adding that Russia has always stressed it did not want 'the enemy' on its border. Woman killed in Ukrainian drone raid – Kursk governor (VIDEO)

A Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's Kursk has killed a 45-year-old woman and left 12 people injured, acting governor Aleksandr Khinshtein has said. In a statement on Friday, Khinshtein said the overnight attack – which he described as 'an inhuman crime by Ukrainian Nazis' – hit an apartment block, which sustained 'serious damage.' He added that a fire had broken out on the four upper floors, which has since been extinguished, and that the blast wave had shattered windows in nearby buildings and a school. According to Khinshtein, the casualties included a 15-year-old. Nine people were hospitalized and three are receiving outpatient treatment, he added. The building's residents have been temporarily relocated to a nearby school, Khinshtein said, noting that authorities will provide them with sleeping accommodation, essential supplies, and food. Experts will assess the extent of damage to the building and whether it can be repaired, he said. Footage circulating on social media showed a large blaze in the yard near the building, with several cars on fire. A fire was also visible on the upper floors of the structure. Later videos from the scene depicted balconies and exterior walls badly damaged, and nearby streets littered with debris from the blast. Officials in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don also reported a Ukrainian drone strikes on apartment buildings, which injured at least 15 people, including two children. Ukraine routinely launches drone attacks deep into Russia, which often target residential buildings and civilian infrastructure. Border areas, including Kursk Region, have been particularly heavily impacted by drone raids and artillery shelling.
