Controversial horror classic is being turned into a TV series after film was BANNED for 'obscene brutality'
Eli's Roth Hostel, which was dubbed 'torture porn' when the first film was released back in 2005, is being developed at Peacock, according to Variety.
Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti is set to star in series, while Roth will write, direct, and executive produce.
Roth wrote and directed the first two films in the franchise but was not involved in the third installment, which was released direct-to-DVD in 2011.
Little is known about the plot of the series yet, but the movies follow a secret Slovakian criminal organization that lures foreign tourists into deceptively idyllic hostels, where wealthy sadists and psychopaths then torture and kill them.
In the first film, two American college graduates travel across Europe and end up in Slovakia after being told that a local hostel in the area is filled with beautiful Eastern European women.
Once inside, they're drugged by the women and then sold to the Elite Hunting Club to be maimed and murdered.
The sequel features a female cast of American art students who are seduced by the promise of a luxurious spa experience in Slovakia.

Like the men in the first movie, the trio end up drugged and sold to the Elite Hunting Club.
After two of the women are killed in unbelievably horrific ways, one manages to escape after castrating her captor.
The sequel was extremely controversial upon its 2007 release and was outright banned in New Zealand.
In the UK, MP Charles Walker said that it 'depicts obscene, misogynistic acts of brutality against women.'
The first film garnered $82 million worldwide off a small budget of under $5 million, while the second made $36 million worldwide.
It's unclear exactly how gruesome the TV series will be, but it was previously described as 'modern adaptation' and 'elevated thriller' by The Hollywood Reporter.
Hostel is far from the only horror IP that Peacock is taking on.
The streamer is also deep into production on a Friday the 13th prequel series called Crystal Lake.
Instead of focusing on Jason Voorhees, the 'expanded prequel' is centered on his mother Pamela, who was the killer in the original 1980 film.
Meanwhile, It: Welcome to Derry, based on Stephen King's original killer clown novel, is coming to HBO in October.
It comes after the success of the 2017 remake and its 2019 sequel.
Ridley Scott's Alien also has its own prequel series premiering soon called Alien: Earth.
The original Alien film famously starred Sigourney Weaver as the iconic character Ripley.
This time around, Sydney Chandler is leading the prequel series as Wendy, an android who has the body of a robot but the consciousness of a human.
Her deep space research vessel crash lands on earth in the year 2120, where Wendy and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers must face 'mysterious life forms more terrifying than anyone could have ever imagined.'

Porn star Bonnie Blue wants to host sex education TV show after bedding 1000s of men
PORN star Bonnie Blue has been discussing the possibility of doing a sex education TV series following the surge of interest in her recent Channel 4 documentary. At the launch of the programme, 1,000 Men And Me, she told event host Anna Richardson she wants to front a show to help men and women improve their love lives. Created by the team behind Traitors UK and Squid Game: The Challenge, it is said to be 'a game of wit, willpower, persuasion and betrayal.' Sounds dead good. CELEBS TAKE POP AT MAT GAVIN & Stacey star Mat Horne has lifted the lid on bizarre encounters with two celebs as he minded his own business on the street. He said he was almost run over by one pop star and playfully heckled by another. At an event last week, Mat revealed: 'I was crossing the road. This car screeched to a halt in front of me and driving it was Harry Styles.' Iconic TV channel axe all UK production after almost three decades as it becomes latest casualty of streaming
I USED to love going to my best mate's house to watch MTV when I was a kid in the Nineties because my parents were too tight to pay for extra TV channels. But youngsters now won't be able to do the same, as I'm told MTV UK is the latest casualty of social media and streaming. 4 4 4 4 My insiders said the station has been axed in all but name after bosses quietly closed the UK production arm of the channel. MTV spin doctors insist the station 'will still have a presence', but concede they will no longer be making original music content. Instead, generic US shows will be aired alongside the usual rolling music videos. Notable cancellations include original series Gonzo and Fresh Out UK. As well as being a huge blow to British music, it's also a major loss to up-and-coming presenting talent. Stars including Kelly Brook, Emma Willis and Cat Deeley all got their big breaks in telly thanks to the station. Greg James and Joel Dommett also hosted on the channel earlier in their careers. My source said: 'Everyone at MTV is gutted. To say there has been a bloodbath of cuts would be an understatement. 'Staff have been left in tears as some have been there for decades. "Those that are left fear more doom and gloom could be around the corner.' It comes after the EMAs — the European answer to the famous VMAs — was axed for this year in another cost- saving measure. A spokesman said: ' MTV UK is sunsetting local series Gonzo and Fresh Out UK, beginning this month. 'We are deeply grateful to our hosts Jack Saunders and Becca Dudley, the talented artists who have been a part of these series, as well as the teams who brought them to life. END OF AN ERA By Jack Hardwick MTV was once a juggernaut of the music industry - with stars lining up to feature on its regular music shows. So I was genuinely gutted to hear from multiple sources the dyer state MTV has found itself in and the brutal culling of large swaths of its staff. UK based production teams and talent handlers have all been given the chop - many of which had dedicated over a decade to the channel. Officially the business is restructuring but it's another sure tell sign the music industry is battling for survival in an age of social media dominance and TV streaming. One exec put it to me: "In terms of original music content on music channels, that's it. There are no music channel promo opportunities for artists now. It was a nice win for newer acts to help break them as we always championed them. It's bleak." The shake up comes hot on the heels of MTV resting the Europe Music Awards for the year - amid rising costs. I'm told it will be back for 2026 though personally I won't be holding my breath. The word iconic is far too often used but MTV really is. For decades it has dominated. On a personal level I remember begging my mum and dad to add the £1 music channel bolt on to our Sky package. Admittedly they took some wearing down but I eventually got my own way. Back in 2021 I excitedly sat front and centre as the Queen of Pop herself Madonna filmed a special for her latest album Madame X in London. A new record is said to be due out before the end of the year - though this time around Madge will have to look elsewhere for promo. I hope the bloodbath currently sweeping the brand right now does achieve its goal - to streamline and revive a glorious brand in the ever challenging market. But I fear it could be too little too late, and it's a stark warning to us all. Adapt or die.
