'Love Island' winner Amaya Espinal weighs in on Cierra Ortega's racism controversy
Straight from the "Love Island USA" villa in Fiji, Amaya Espinal, the freshly crowned winner of the dating competition series, is the newest guest on "Call Her Daddy." Espinal, who was lovingly dubbed "Amaya Papaya" by the show's viewers, sat down with host Alex Cooper on the July 16 episode to spill on being a bombshell, winning America's heart with her sensitivity, and taking the prize money home.
Espinal, 25, won the final public vote alongside Bryan Arenales during the Season 7 finale on July 13. Alongside their bragging rights as the fan-favorite couple, the two split a $100,000 prize.
The New York native and cardiac nurse also got candid on "Love Island" castmate Cierra Ortega, who was abruptly ousted from the show following a racism controversy.
"We all genuinely did not know," Espinal said. "We did not get the chance to say goodbye. We weren't able to see her pack her bags. It literally just happened in the flash of an eye. It felt very unreal."
In the week leading up to Ortega's departure, screenshots of alleged Instagram posts showed the contestant — whose family is of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage — using a racist slur against people of Asian descent to negatively refer to her eyes.
Within days of leaving the villa, Ortega posted a nearly five-minute "accountability video" apologizing to "the entire Asian community" and saying she "had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm, and came with the history that it did."
Amaya Espinal's message to 'Love Island' castmate Cierra Ortega after racism scandal
Ortega wasn't the only "Love Island" contestant to spark backlash due to online commentary.
Starting cast member Yulissa Escobar unceremoniously exited off-camera three days into the series with limited acknowledgement. Before the show even premiered, the Miami businesswoman received backlash when several clips of her using a racial slur on a podcast surfaced. She later posted a written apology "for using a word I had no right in using."
While reflecting on Ortega's "Love Island" exit, Espinal stressed the importance of using inclusive language.
"I definitely do think words matter, and everyone should be respected," Espinal said. "I just hope that she learns from her consequences. She is a grown woman, so hopefully moving forward, this should not be repeated."
Amaya Espinal talks historic 'Love Island' win
Espinal, who is of Dominican descent, made "Love Island USA" history with Arenales as the first Latino couple to win the show.
The fan-favorite contestants' victory earned praise on social media for its positive media representation of the Latino community, especially amid the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration.
"It's really, really huge," Espinal told Cooper of the milestone. "My parents literally came from the Dominican Republic and didn't have the best upbringing. So, Latino culture to me is very, very huge. I feel blessed, and I feel so much gratitude."

‘Crazy stalker' toasts bride and groom with unhinged wedding speech confession: ‘What does she have that I don't?'
Her big day speech left 'em speechless. There's nearly nothing sweeter than a sweetheart declaring her undying devotion to the groom at a wedding — unless, of course, the lady professing her love isn't the bride. 'I let this crazy woman attend my wedding and she crashed out,' newlywed Dan Freed wrote in the closed-captions of a startling scene from his nightmarish nuptials. Advertisement 4 A groom virally claims that a 'stalker' hijacked his wedding by delivering a 'crazy' speech during the reception. @dan_freed/TikTok Eye-popping footage of the reception ruckus, which pulled in nearly 600,000 TikTok views, features an unnamed dame shamelessly fawning over Freed in front of his new wife and well-wishers before spiraling into an emotionally charged tirade. But social media skeptics can't seem to decide whether the gal, who Freed has deemed a 'stalker,' is a legit wedding crasher or simply a paid actor, hired to shake things up at the shindig. Advertisement 'You are the luckiest woman in the world,' began the blonde in her speech. 'Dan is such a great guy. He's got everything a woman could ever want.' 'He's kind, generous, successful, gorgeous. He's got an incredible body,' she continued to the laughing crowd before ripping the microphone off its stand and announcing, 'I'm just going to speak from the heart.' That's when the vibes switched from cutesy to kooky. 4 Stunned social media spectators showered Freed and his new bride with support in light of their wedding day disruption. Scott Griessel – Advertisement 'I would do anything to be you, Carolyn,' the showstopper said to the bride as onlookers nervously chuckled. 'No really, I would,' she asserted angrily, 'because, Dan, you never even gave us a chance, you never even gave us a chance.' 'I'm the one who taught you to make crab cakes,' ranted the distressed damsel, while the once-giggling faces of the onlookers turned stone-cold in shock. Freed jumped out of his seat and wrested the mic out of the woman's hands. Advertisement 'What does she have that I don't?,' she screamed. 'I'm Asian, too. I can dye my hair black.' 4 Freed's clip has left the internet divided as to whether the woman's meltdown was legit or a staged skit. @dan_freed/TikTok A handful of horrified folks online called the disastrous display 'crazy,' and offered Freed and his new wife sympathy and support. 'Block her number in his phone and everywhere on social media, cuz she ain't gonna leave him alone everrrrrr,' advised a concerned commenter. 'Men and women cannot be strictly platonic friends. Especially not when you are in a committed relationship. Only exception is if she's also in a relationship and you are only together as couples. Even then… caution,' wrote another. 'I kinda feel bad for her, mostly because everyone was laughing probably thinking it was a joke at first,' a bleeding heart chimed. Freed responded saying, 'It was very awkward. I think the laughs turned to anger really fast.' 4 Freed claims his wedding guests were also confused by the woman's wacky confession. Halfpoint – Advertisement Still, some not-so-easily fooled cynics seem to be convinced that the meltdown was nothing more than an afterparty prank. 'Dan this can't be real why was she invited if it was?,' questioned an audience member. 'Are we sure this isn't just a wedding of improv actors and their closest friends because this is so good,' another said. 'Great set!,' joked a doubter. 'Weddings are overrated, so I'm glad yours had entertainment.' Advertisement 'Please let this be staged,' a separate viewer prayed, prompting Freed to answer, writing, 'Who would be crazy enough to destroy their own wedding.' And he's right. Wild wedding speeches can upend perfectly pleasant unions. Desiree White, a recent bride, was swept off of her feet, when the best man confessed his love in a toast at her special soirée. Advertisement Rachel, another newly hitched heartbreaker, from Oklahoma, was publicly outed for cozying up to her groom while she was still in a relationship with his best friend, Dylan, who was also the best man. 'I just noticed the connection they had,' said Dylan in his shocking address to Rachel's 150 wedding guests. 'The laughs they shared together, the way they looked at each other.' 'And you would think it sounds really romantic, but the only problem was I was dating Rachel at the time.'

'Love Island USA' Season 7 Winner Addresses Cierra Ortega Scandal
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Love Island USA Season 7 winner Amaya "Papaya" Espinal has spoken out about her co-star Cierra Ortega's sudden exit from the series. During Wednesday's episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, the reality television star condemned Ortega's prior use of a racial slur. Newsweek reached out to Ortega's representative via email on Thursday for comment. The Context Ortega was ousted from the villa over a resurfaced social media post in which she used a racial slur toward the Asian community. In a video posted to her Instagram on July 10, Ortega, who had been dating Nicolas Vansteenberghe before leaving the show, issued an apology. "While I was in the villa, there were some posts that resurfaced from my past where I was very naively using an incredibly offensive and derogatory term," she said. "I want to first start by addressing not just anyone that I have hurt or deeply offended, but most importantly, the entire Asian community. I am deeply, truly, honestly so sorry. I had no idea that the word held as much pain as much harm, and came with the history that it did or I never would have used it. I had no ill intention when I was using it, but that's absolutely no excuse because intent doesn't excuse ignorance." "Love Island USA" stars Amaya Espinal (L) and Cierra Ortega (R). Ben Symons/Peacock What To Know Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper brought up the topic during her conversation with Espinal, who won the hit reality TV series alongside Bryan Arenales on Sunday. "A huge moment this season was when Cierra abruptly left the villa. Can you talk to me just from your perspective as an Islander, what went down?" Cooper asked. "Dude, literally we all started the morning together, and then out of nowhere, she did disappear, and we all were just asking, where was Cierra?" Espinal said. "I remember asking, I was like, 'Do you guys know where Cierra went?' And then same thing with Nic [Vansteenberghe]. I was like, 'Nic, where's Cierra?' We all genuinely did not know. So we did not get the chance to say goodbye." "We weren't able to see her pack her bags. It literally just happened in the flash of an eye. It felt very unreal in a way. Like what is going on?" the fan-favorite added. "Where were you guys when she clearly went and packed her bags?" Cooper asked, to which Espinal replied: "We were all in the villa. We literally were all just hanging out." "You were like outside?" questioned Cooper. "Outside. And she was gone." When Espinal was asked how she felt about the situation, she said that "words matter." "Everyone should be respected. I just hope that she learns from her consequences. You know, she is a grown woman, so hopefully moving on forward, it's just like, this should not be repeated," she said. Ben Symons/Peacock What People Are Saying Bachelorette star Jenn Tran on TikTok on July 4: "Obviously, there's been a lot of stuff circulating online about Cierra and her racist C-slur that she said on her Instagram. First of all, I know that girl is not living under a rock, so she knows she shouldn't be using that word. There's no excuse for it. That's, like, first and foremost. I know there are certain words that I can't use because of the negative connotation that goes behind it, and I choose to be a good person and not offend other people. Simple. "Secondly, the way in which she even used the word. The post that she made was of her referring to her eyes and how she had to get Botox because she didn't like the way she looked, because it was too C-wordy. And I hope to God this woman does not have a platform because the fact she felt that was OK to say just makes me so upset." Ortega's Love Island USA co-star Belle-A Walker on Instagram on July 6: "As a proud Asian American woman, I'm deeply appreciative of the Love Island USA producers for taking a stand and making it clear that racism of any kind is not tolerated. "When I first saw what my fellow Islander said on their social media pages, I was incredibly heartbroken. But I wanted to wait until they left the villa and were able to address the situation, genuinely apologize, and commit to learning from the experience before deciding how our relationship would look moving forward." What Happens Next The Love Island USA Season 7 reunion will take place on August 25 on Peacock.

Love Island spoiler: Harry and Emma reignite old flames as she calls out his relationship with Helena
Whoa, whoa, whoa, could Love Island's Harry and Emma be getting back together? It looks like it, if the teaser for tonight's show (Thursday 17th July) is anything to go by. In the episode, which will air on ITV2 at 9pm, the duo have another conversation and things get a little flirty. "Would you have gone to the Hideaway with me last night?" Harry says to Emma, as they sit down for a chat. Seemingly aware of his flirtatious ways, she replies: "You're getting bored and you're looking to stir the pot." The pair then reflect on their dwindling time on the Island, and Emma hints at a reunion between the pair, saying: "I think people would love to see…" Harry gets the message straight away, so she continues: "Play ball." Emma then goes on to share her disapproval of Harry's relationship with Helena. "I don't think people see you and her as the real deal… no one really sees you as end game or that you're going to work on the outside… Everyone thinks you've taken the path of least resistance because perhaps you don't feel like you can step up to the ones you really want," she says. Harry responds: "I can't compare anyone to you, of course I love you, I'm going to always have love for you. We've known each other for a very long time." He then asks: "Did we really come on Love Island to get back together?" Emma made her Love Island debut as part of the Casa Amor line-up. While her arrival has been questioned by Harry, Helena and many of the other Love Island 2025 cast, she insists that she hasn't come on the show to rekindle with Harry. During a previous conversation with Harry, she got onto him about their breakup, saying: "The fact of the matter is, you've brought girls into our home, and I wouldn't do that to you, because that was the rules, and you think the rules don't apply to you. "It's my house, Harry. You think as soon as there's a boundary in place, cross it? You think, 'Oh yes, let me just f*** this up', like there's just no need for any other woman to be in my house." However, since her and Conor ended things, Emma's tune towards Harry seems to have changed. Could it be second time lucky for these two? Only time will tell... New episodes of Love Island air at 9pm on ITV2 on weekdays and Sundays.
